Page Two May 30, 2010 Spiritual Reflection In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Simple, isn t it? We learned that prayer when we first began to come to Church. Perhaps our parents helped us put our fingers in the holy water font and bless ourselves as we said it. It s the prayer with which we begin and end the Eucharist as well. What a great reminder it is! God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit have always been in existance... will always be in existence. It s a mystery that we cannot fully understand. Even though it cannot be fully understood, it can be lived and appreciated. God is Father, the one who made all things and keeps them in existence. God created the world we live in and all the wonderful things we can enjoy. He created us and gave us dominion over the world. God calls us to take good care of the world as well, and pass it on in good shape to the generations that come after us. We can help God in His continuing work as well. We can respect the gift of our sexuality and be faithful to our vows. We can cooperate with God as He created new life within us and charges us with the responsibility of raising our children as children of God. What a wonderful privilege! What a hard job! God is Son. God loves us so much that He gave us His Son to reveal God s love for us. Jesus was the word of God made flesh. He lived the love of God for us and taught us to do so. He helped to open our minds to higher things and to accept our higher calling. He died and rose again that we might have life, forgiveness and the courage to live as God s children every day. We can receive Jesus, body, soul and divinity every time we go to Mass. We become what we eat, the very body of Christ here on Earth. What greater love could God have for us than to give us His Son? God is Spirit. The love of the Son for the Father and the Father for the Son was expressed in the Holy Spirit. That Spirit of God calls us to live as sisters and brothers to one another. We become one body in Christ and become indeed the body of Christ in the world we live in. The gifts of that Holy Spirit give us the courage and strength to do each day what we need to do as we strive to live as children of God. Those gifts are awesome indeed. If we cooperate with the Holy Spirit, others will be amazed at the lives we live. God as Trinity is too complicated for us to fully understand. It is described as a mystery. Our minds are just not large enough to grasp it. But we can live that mystery each day, as we are thankful and responsible for creation, as we follow the example and light of Christ, as we draw upon God s strength to do good things in God s name. This week, we can reflect upon these truths and live as thankful children of God. We can open ourselves to receive God s gifts that we can build up the body of Christ. We can reject the kind of gossip and negative talk that can tear down others and weaken Christ s body here on Earth. Have a good week! MMX Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com WIERZĘ W DUCHA ŚWIĘTEGO Obchodzimy dzisiaj uroczystość Trójjedynego Boga Uroczystość Trójcy Przenajświętszej. Całe życie chrześcijanina powinno być poświęcone uwielbieniu Trójcy Świętej. W dniu dzisiejszym jednak oddajemy tę cześć w sposób bardziej uroczysty. Trójca Przenajświętsza to pierwsza prawda i największa tajemnica naszej wiary. Jakże więc moglibyśmy sięgnąć do nieskończonej istoty Boga i zrozumieć Jego Tajemnice? Gdybyśmy byli zdolni Go zrozumieć nie byłby Bogiem. Chwała Ojcu i Synowi i Duchowi Świętemu... -ks. Idzi-

Page Six May 30, 2010 THE MOST HOLY TRINITY FIRST READING: Proverbs 8:22 31 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 8:4 5, 6 7, 8 9 SECOND READING: Romans 5:1 5 GOSPEL: John 16:12 15 Belief in the God Who Is Three-in-One Jesus revealed that God is Abba, Daddy, a generous, devoted, merciful, and loving parent. This revelation was so intimate and so clear that those who experienced Jesus came to trust that he was Son of Abba and God-in-the-flesh. Jesus also invited others to share in the relationship he had with the Father, and revealed that the power to do so lay in his gift of the very life force of God, the Holy Spirit. Thus, as followers of Jesus, we have come to believe in God as the Holy Trinity one God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Comment The first reading from Proverbs may, at first, be a bit confusing. How does Wisdom fit into the theme of the Holy Trinity and God s love for us? The description of Wisdom is reminiscent of the hymn to the divine Word in the Prologue of the Gospel according to John: In the beginning was the Word; and the Word was with God (John 1:1). Likewise, there is a bit of the creative Spirit of God being poured forth. Listen to Wisdom (Proverbs 1:23): Lo! I will pour out to you my spirit, I will acquaint you with my words. And when we consider today s responsorial psalm, Psalm 8, we begin to recognize a poetic kinship between Wisdom and us humans whom God has created just a little less than the angels and has given responsibility for and to our fellow creatures. Wisdom, God s skilled craftsman, is also God s delight the same Wisdom who delights in the sons of men. Thus, in wisdom literature, especially Proverbs, Wisdom is the common ground we share with God in the wonders of creation, the place where God and people relate and communicate. Wisdom sees only good in God s creation and sees all things as blessings. Wisdom is also pure gift, a spark of the divine that God gladly shares with us so that we may live wisely and well. Wisdom is kissing cousin to mercy, which is the Father s tender love for us, what God wants us to feel and do for one another. Anything less is folly, and fools we are not. The reading from Romans reminds us that our faith has given us access to the grace in which we stand. It goes on to assure us that the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. In other words, the Holy Trinity already lives in us and we in the Trinity. This mutual indwelling does not mean the end of effort on our part; rather, it gives meaning to all our efforts. We possess wisdom that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope. In the Gospel reading, Jesus declares that we must possess the Spirit if we are to understand his message. Why so? Was Jesus really not that great a teacher? Not at all. Jesus message cannot be separated from himself, his person. Only the indwelling Spirit can bring this message home for us. The Father who sent the Son now sends into each heart the Holy Spirit in order to continue the Son s work and to spread his message for all the world. Reflection Years ago, a teacher tried to explain the Holy Trinity to her class of grade-school children by using a shamrock as an example. Later, when she tested her students, one of the children responded to the question Who is God? with the interesting reply, God is small and green and split three ways. Nice try, teacher! The doctrine of the Holy Trinity did not sprout out of a shamrock. It grew out of people s experience of God as creating, revealing, and inspiring. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity tells us that although God is one, God is not secluded or detached. No, God is relational and bonding. If you re looking for a better image than a shamrock for the Holy Trinity, look no farther than a love affair. The Trinity is an ongoing love affair between the God who creates, the God who reveals, and the God who inspires. After all, that s what love does. It creates, reveals, and inspires. And it does one more thing: it attracts and invites others to join in the loving. Copyright 2003, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.
