Page Two March 2, 2008 Spiritual Reflection A man was born blind. Those around Jesus had some mistaken notions. They didn t see the goodness in the man, or the man s potential, but only the fact that he couldn t physically see. They showed their prejudice. Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents? Of course, nobody s sin was the cause of the man s blindness. Jesus did all he could to bring this petty conversation to a better level. Jesus spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva, and smeared the clay on his eyes, and said to him, Go wash in the Pool of Siloam, - which means Sent -. So he went and wash and came back able to see. Now we can expect thankfulness and rejoicing, right? The man born blind was indeed grateful. But others stood ready to criticize. This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath. Jesus did all he could to bring the Pharisees to faith as well. He could see the potential in their hearts, too, but they weren t willing to open their own eyes and see more clearly. Rather than doing so, they spread controversy and caused division. They seemed to be experts at doing that. They were wonderful at giving advice to others, but very poor at revealing by their own example the love and light of God. Their energy is spent in pointing fingers at others to try to conceal their own sin and blindness. In our first reading, we hear that man sees appearance but the LORD looks into the heart. Our second reading calls us to be children of the light. As long as we accept our prejudices as valid and use them to judge others, we can t live as children of the light. When we judge others, we cooperate with the forces of evil. We can continue to undermine others, undermine faith, undermine our leaders and undermine God. Evil thrives amid prejudice, controversy and division. How happy the devil is when we act in these ways. Original Sin has not been eradicated from the world. Each day we are faced with the temptation to take the easy way out. We can do the same things many others have done. But we can also rise above these things. God can remove from us those weaknesses and defects of character that we haven t been able to change by ourselves. All God needs is an invitation. We can open ourselves to God s healing, or we can keep God out. May God grant us the wisdom and openness to see. May God grant us forgiveness and help us live as children of light. As we pray, fast and give this week, we make room for the God who can save us and raise us up. All we need to do is let God in. Have a good week! MMVI Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com OCZY DUSZY I CIAŁA... Możemy jednak wyzdrowieć i przejrzeć. Boski Lekarz, Jezus Chrystus, zawsze jest w pobliżu. Kiedy z wiarą przyjmujemy łaskę chrztu, On nam otwiera oczy i otrzymujemy wówczas Bożą wiedzę, Boży wzrok, nowe oczy duszy. Chrystus mówi do nas: Ja jestem światłością świata. - Ks. Idzi -
