Page Two July 12, 2009 Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979 Phone: (312) 534-8230 Fax: (312) 534-6379 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As summer continues, children and their parents and catechists are asking for help in areas where violence is a daily threat. Children grow and thrive in safe communities, but children suffer greatly in the face of bullying, the force of threats and physical harm. Gunshots and gang violence leave children scared. They live with fear and hyper-vigilance. Some are wounded and a few are killed. Children walk to school reflecting not on their homework but on an escape route should they be threatened with violence. This fear, which generates anger and isolation, can shape a child s whole life. They can lose any sense of compassion. Those reponsible for their well-being in schools and parks and on the streets, those who provide community health care along with probation officers and others responsible for public safety often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of children in need. A pastoral letter by the United States Catholic Bishop in 1994 reads: Our families are torn by violence. Our communities are destroyed by violence. Our faith is tested by violence. We have an obligation to respond. Faith helps us foster peaceful communities that protect the gift of life. Many are willing to help, but the response is often not well coordinated. When everyone works together, a safety net grows. Those who work where the threat of violence dominates children s lives insist that trust and confidence can be restored through common efforts at reconciliation, efforts that emphasize accountability and stress the consequences of violence in word and action. They suggest three approaches: 1. Make children at risk a priority personally and in our parishes. Be part of a safety net by opening doors, especially gyms and school buildings, and providing safe havens for children. In parishes not located near youth at risk, partnerships with parishes in embattled communities can be forged. We already have a network of sharing parishes. It can become an instrument for bringing professionals who would volunteer to work with young people in meeting medical, legal, recreational, financial and advocacy needs. One of the priests, deacons or pastoral associates in your parish can help you make contacts. 2. Participate with concerned parents in helping the agencies that help young people. Visit a park, a school, a church, or the juvenile probation department and establish relationships that will make you a peacemaker. The Cardinal s Letter is continued on page 6 of our bulletin.

Page Four July 12, 2009 SAFETY FIRST! As you can see in the pictures, our parking lot safety project is complete with parking blocks in place as well as gates at the alley leading to Nora Street and south of our brick garage. The project was discussed and subsequently approved by our parish council and finance committee. These minor additions will solve a major problem of drivers using our parking lot as a high speed short cut to and from Addison even during funerals! As you already know from driving on the streets, drivers have become increasingly aggressive and, as they were driving through our parking lot, it was no different. This was happening despite the fact that using an alley or private property to go from one street to another is illegal. In the past months, there have been a number of near misses as parishioners were going from their cars to our parish buildings. Ironically enough, one recent near miss occurred near the Addison entrance involving two council members who had, minutes before, approved the project. A car speeding northbound through the lot just missed hitting them. The parking blocks are low and have been set far enough back from our property line to allow easy access to neighboring garages (vans and large SUVs can get in and out in one swing) and finally to give parkers a guide as to how far the front ends of cars should be so that they are not hit by alley traffic. During week-end Masses, the gates will be open and cars can enter and exit south of the brick garage, through the alley onto Nora Street or directly onto Addison. During the week, entrance and exit is via Addison. Just as the workers were finishing, I saw young children on their little bicycles, a boy on his scooter and mothers with strollers in the parking lot with no fear of being hit. It was wonderful to see. For the bit of inconvenience, the safety of our children and parishioners is worth it. I hope that you agree. The life saved could be yours. A network of communication supplements a network of action. As the State budget is being debated, draw the connections between a broken social safety net and the growth in violent behavior. 4. Come to a deeper understanding of the personal and social causes of both domestic and street violence: drug addictions, broken homes, lack of proper food or shelter. Listening to the voices of those who suffer violence makes a big difference. When the problem becomes everyone s, hope is kindled. Thanks for taking these suggestions to hear in the midst of a summer already well advanced. God bless you.
