Matthew 22:37

Page Two October 26, 2008 Spiritual Reflection You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. We re told that these are the two greatest commandments. Matthew tells us that the whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. It can be tempting for us to examine our consciences using the Ten Commandments we have learned. We can reduce our lives to actions and feel good if we avoid certain actions. It is true, though, that a chair can avoid certain actions. A chair cannot live a good Christian life by just sitting there. Neither can we! When we consider the Sacred Heart of Jesus we consider the life of Jesus, how Jesus life was filled with action. Besides that, he didn t try to be careful in his actions. If somebody needed help, he opened his heart to that person and helped. If someone needed forgiveness and healing, he came into the heart of the person, forgave and healed. He was second-guessed many times. He went to his death because he lived a life of true love. Can we summon the courage to do the same? Thus says the LORD: You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. Who are the aliens around us? Who do we see as being different from ourselves. That can be those who have come to our country to live. They may speak a different language. They may have different traditions. So did our ancestors when they came here. Do we do what we can to welcome them? Do we open our hearts to them? There may be newcomers in town or in our parish. Do we pay any attention at all to them? Do they feel like they belong because of our warm welcome? There may be aliens in our own families. They might be people we don t always agree with. They might have married into our family. How do we make all family members feel like they are one of us? Are our hearts warm and open or cold and closed? You shall not wrong and widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. Who are the widows and orphans among us? Do we reach out with compassion to help those who are in need? Do we support those who have lost loved ones, those who are divorced, those who have had family and other difficulties? Does the time come when we suspend judgment against those who have had problems? If God hears their cry and we don t, what does that mean for us? If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him. What is our motivation for giving? Do we give freely and generously out of gratitude for what we have received? Or, do we give in order to get? When we are generous, does everybody have to know about it? When we give of ourselves to others, do we make them feel like they owe us? Do we give out of the goodness of our hearts? Love of God needs to be expressed by our love for others. We hear in Scripture that if we say we love God yet not our neighbor, then we are liars. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. That s plenty for us to work on these next seven days. Have a good week! Zostawiając nam przykład swej miłości Jezus umiłował nas wszystkich do końca - to jest do ostateczności i bez końca - to znaczy zawsze nas kocha. Idzi
