Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Five Spiritual Reflection From the first days of our lives, we have been kissed. Kissing a child is a deep expression of our love for them. We hope that they ll grow up and always be loved. When we have more than one child, there is occasionally a squabble. We might encourage our children to kiss and make up. When we have a boyfriend or girlfriend, our kisses can be an expression of our deep affection. We may also kiss and make up. We know that a kiss can sometimes be a betrayal, too, as kisses can be used to get what we want. And we re certainly aware of Jesus ultimate betrayal, when Judas betrayed him with a kiss.!!! In today s Gospel, a sinful woman kisses Jesus feet. Simon, Jesus host, did not give Jesus a kiss at the dinner. The woman s encounter with Jesus brought her forgiveness, but was also the way for her to show her great love. Our Gospel and first reading this weekend remind us of something very important. God is the one who forgives sins. We are the ones who sin. The issue is not whether or not we will sin. We will and we do. The issue is whether we ll open ourselves to the justice and mercy of God. David in our first reading does. This woman does. Simon, however, resists. As Simon sits in judgment, the woman kneels in repentance. The Gospel ends with Simon being rebuked and the woman being forgiven. Many times we are much more like Simon than the woman. It is easy for us to detect the flaws in those around us. The more we look for those, the easier it is for us to ignore our own. Only when we acknowledge our weakness and turn to God seeking mercy can we accept God s forgiveness and begin a new way of living. Sometimes we might need a prophet to help us determine what in our lives needs healing and forgiving. One way we can come appreciate our debt is to follow the advice Nathan gave to David, to recall the good that God had done for him. David had been anointed King, rescued from Saul and given possessions and family, and even more. In forgetting all this good, he lusted after what he did not have and sinned deeply. It could be helpful for us to sit down and make a list of the good God has done for us. That could help us appreciate the fact that what we ve been given is significant, much more than the things we would still like to have. Many have lost everything by seeking what they should not have. Perhaps the sinful woman in today s Gospel did the same thing. Still, Jesus was able to look into her heart and see that there were not pretensions there. She simply loved him. He loved her too, and His grace and mercy brought her forgiveness and peace. At the same time, Simon, the great Judge, was rebuked. This week, we can make a list of the ways we ve been blessed. We can consider how we judge others as well. We can approach Jesus as the woman in our Gospel did, and hear the words she heard, Your faith has saved you; go in peace. Have a good week! MMX Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com
Page Six June 13, 2010 Collection Relief Several years ago, when our parish school operations left our parish deeper and deeper in debt, it was decided to initiate a School Deficit Collection which was taken up each month. Despite your generosity over the years, the school was forced to close under financial weight, leaving our parish with hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans which we are responsible to pay back to the Archdiocese. This is the procedure whether a parish school is open or not. Through your generosity in that extra collection and primarily your generosity in this year s Annual Catholic Appeal and our one time only opportunity to have your donations matched by the Archdiocese, our parish is steadily repaying those loans to a manageable level. Our business manager, Anna Knap, has worked tirelessly to cut parish expenses and renegotiate contracts and costs with vendors with whom our parish does business. These steps have also helped St. Priscilla move ever closer to financial stability. Having taken all of these in consideration, our Parish Pastoral Council and I agreed unanimously that the School Deficit Collection will end with the week-end of June 19-20, 2010. Although there will be an envelope in the packet of envelopes mailed to your home, there will be no formal collection beginning in July. Simply disregard that envelope. I also know how many parishioners have lost jobs or have had hours cut while others worry about the stability of jobs they still have. Other parishioners are on fixed income and must balance generosity to our parish with their own living expenses. I hope that the termination of this extra collection will be a bit of relief to all parishioners. Unfortunately, I have no authority to cancel two other collections taken up each month: 1) Sharing Parish & 2) monthly collections for Archdiocesan needs. These are mandated to us by the Archdiocese. The donations you make are important in sustaining our parish and giving you direct stewardship of St. Priscilla, but, remember, charity begins at home. Your needs and the needs of your family must always come first. Please know that I am appreciative for every penny you donate to our parish and that all funds are closely accounted for and are spent wisely. Gratefully, Father Idzi
