Summer vacation was like that when I was a child. There was no need and certainly no desire to organize it for the sake of ef iciency. Summer was better when it just happened: bike riding and pick-up softball on the school playground behind our house and swimming at Lakeside Park and going for ice cream at dusk and catching ire lies at night and a thousand other things that come together and make up summer. There are other things, however, that drop into our lives but never go anywhere, except perhaps with a lot of prodding. School comes to mind. I never would have gone had I been given a menu of options. Having my tonsils out was another such thing, and wearing braces on my teeth, and moving into a new city when I was eight, and my grandmother dying on my twelfth birthday. I took them in stride, mostly because there was no other way to take them. Given my druthers, though, they never would have happened at all. I simply lived with them, and then they were over. The Gospel this week proposes that God comes in much the same way. God gives us ive talents worth of life or two talents worth or even one talent s worth, and with it enough energy to double it. Sometimes, though, God drops in when we d rather be left alone, and so we try to bury God just because the situation doesn t look very life-giving to us. Yet it can be life-giving, like the weary routine of raising children or going to the same job we ve been going to for the past twenty- ive years or taking care of an aging parent. Eventually we may ind out that burying such life is more deadly than the risk of living it, and living it brings a higher yield than we could ever expect. Rev. Joseph J. OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO October 2014 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over forty years in an effort to eradicate poverty. During World Youth Day, on July 25, 2013, Pope Francis told us, Never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity. The CCHD puts these words in to action by funding housing, education, the development of job opportunities and other social-justice initiatives. Projects supported by the CCHD go beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. For example, for several years now, the Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation (PBMR) has been transforming the way communities engage in restorative justice practices to develop a culture of nonviolence in Chicago s South Side. The PBMR has also developed a strong leadership model for at-risk youth to facilitate peace circles in areas of high con lict. In addition, the PBMR assists families to address unjust legislation surrounding juveniles without parole. The heart of the PBMR is about building human relationships; it carries on Christ s mission to bring glad tidings to the poor...liberty to captives...sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (Luke 4:18). This Collection is the primary source of funding for the CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fifty percent of the Collection s proceeds stay here in our archdiocese to ight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors, and the other 50 percent go to funding programs nationwide. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much... -MATTHEW 25:21 God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously give back with increase. He doesn t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Drodzy Bracia i Siostry w Chrystusie: Od ponad czterdziestu lat Katolicka Kampania na Rzecz Rozwoju Człowieka (CCHD) przychodzi z pomocą społecznościom na terenie całego kraju pracując wytrwale nad usuwaniem przyczyn ubóstwa. 25 lipca 2013 r. podczas Dni Młodzieży papież Franciszek powiedział: pracujcie niestrudzenie na rzecz świata sprawiedliwszego i bardziej solidarnego! CCHD przekuwa te słowa w czyn zapewniając fundusze na tanie mieszkania, edukację, stwarzanie miejsc pracy oraz podejmując inne inicjatywy służące sprawiedliwości społecznej. Inicjatywy wspierane przez CCHD wykraczają daleko poza zabezpieczanie podstawowych potrzeb. Służą one również zapewnianiu społecznościom dobrej i stabilnej przyszłości. Na przykład Duszpasterstwo Pojednania Najdroższej Krwi (Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation PBMR) pracuje od wielu lat nad zmianą podejścia społeczności na południowej stronie Chicago do procesu naprawiania szkód spowodowanych przestępstwem tak, by promować kulturę pokojowego rozwiązywania kon liktów. Duszpasterstwo PBMR wypracowało również model silnego przywództwa dla młodzieży ze środowisk zagrożonych przestępczością, żeby w okolicach gdzie często wybuchają niebezpieczne kon likty, umożliwić młodym ludziom spotykanie się w tzw. kręgach pokoju. Ponadto PBMR wspiera rodziny w walce z niesprawiedliwym ustawodawstwem, w wyniku którego młodociani osadzani są w zamkniętych zakładach bez możliwości zwolnienia warunkowego. Działalność PBMR skupia się na budowaniu relacji międzyludzkich duszpasterstwo to kontynuuje misję Chrystusa niosąc dobrą nowinę ubogim, więźniom głosząc wolność, a niewidomym przejrzenie, uciśnionych odsyłając wolnymi (Łk 4, 18). Kolekta ta jest głównym źródłem inansowania przez CCHD grantów na programy walki z biedą i programów edukacyjnych. Każdego roku fundusze zebrane w czasie tej kolekty są źródłem nowej nadziei dla osób żyjących w ubóstwie na terenie całej archidiecezji Chicago. 50% wpływów z tej kolekty pozostaje w naszej archidiecezji fundusze te przeznaczone są na walkę z biedą i na obronę godności bliźnich żyjących w naszych wspólnotach. Pozostałe 50% zebranej sumy przeznaczone jest na wspieranie programów ogólnokrajowych. W tym roku a pel na rzecz CCHD będzie miał miejsce w weekend listopada zaś kolekta w weekend listopada. Proszę, stańcie wraz z nami w obronie ludzkiej godności i wykażcie się Chrystusową szczodrością wobec bliźnich znajdujących się w potrzebie.
