2 fr. marcin`s Letter / List Ojca marcina Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Ladislaus, After one year I m glad to be back to St. Ladislaus for over a month. Even though it s holiday time I was surprised to find a good number of people frequenting the weekday morning Masses. The same is with Eucharistic celebrations. It s encouraging for a priest to see that faithful need sacraments. I ve had a busy academic year in Cracow with the usual teaching work as professor at Ignatianum: lectures, seminars and exams. I ve also helped organizing two international conferences in May. So now the more I m enjoying this quiet time in Chicago. In the middle of summer and Ordinary Time of the liturgical year we are invited to rediscover the deeper dimension of our life. Last we ve read the description of the Eucharistic Miracle from the St. John s Gospel. At the end of it we saw Jesus escaping from the crowd that wanted to proclaim him a king. This we re reading the beginning of the teaching of Jesus that followed that event. Jesus brings us the deeper understanding of our life. We need ordinary bread in order to maintain our earthly life, but we also need Jesus, the Word of God, the Bread of Life in order to maintain our spiritual life. Our spiritual life is something that makes us human beings makes us something more than just part of nature. We are also s u p e r natural, we are called to go beyond our mere physiological and psychological existence. Let us don t forget about this even though the world tells us something else. Let us listen to the voice of Jesus who says: "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst." fr..marcin Baran, S.J. Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele św. Władysława, Cieszę się, że mogę po roku być znowu u św. Władysława na ponad miesiąc czasu. Dobrze jest zastać parafię pełną życia i aktywności w postaci różnych grup spotykających się nie tylko na Eucharystii. Uczestnictwo sporej ilości wiernych w tygodniowych i niedzielnych Eucharystiach jest bardzo zachęcające dla księdza, które główną racją bytu jest sprawowanie sakramentów.ten rok był dla mnie intensywny. Poza zwyczajną pracą wykładowcy na Ignatianum w Krakowie w postaci wykładów, seminariów i egzaminów, miałem także okazję współorganizować w maju dwie międzynarodowe konferencje naukowe. Udało mi się także zakończyć żmudną pracę nad pewnym artykułem. Tym bardziej cieszę się tym spokojnym czasem z Wami w Chicago. W środku lata oraz zwykłego okresu liturgicznego jesteśmy zaproszeni, aby odkryć na nowo głębszy wymiar naszego życia. W poprzednią niedzielę czytaliśmy opis cudu Eucharystycznego z Ewangelii Janowej. Zakończył się on ucieczką Jezusa przed tłumem, który chciał Go obwołać królem. W tę niedzielę czytamy początek Mowy Eucharystycznej Jezusa, która nastąpiła po tym wydarzeniu. Jezus chce nas otworzyć na głębsze rozumienie naszego życia. Potrzebujemy chleba powszedniego, żaby podtrzymać nasze ziemskie życie. Ale potrzebujemy także Jezusa, Słowa Bożego, Chleba Życia, aby podtrzymać nasze życie duchowe. To nasze życie duchowe czyni nas w pełni istotami ludzkimi czyni nas czymś więcej niż tylko częścią natury. Jesteśmy także istotami n a d przyrodzonymi, wezwanymi do przekroczenia naszej czysto fizjologicznej i psychologicznej egzystencji. Nie zapomnijmy o tym, nawet jeśli świat mówi nam coś zupełni innego. Wsłuchajmy się w głos Jezusa, który mówi do nas:"ja jestem chlebem życia. Kto do Mnie przychodzi, nie będzie łaknął; a kto we Mnie wierzy, nigdy pragnąć nie będzie". o.marcin Baran, S.J.

5 HISTORIA SANKTUARIUM MATKI BOŻEJ Z GUADALUPE Sanktuarium Matki Bożej z Guadalupe jest, zaraz po Watykanie, największym i najczęściej odwiedzanym miejscem kultu chrześcijańskiego na świecie. Rocznie odwiedza go średnio od 10 do 20 milionów pielgrzymów. Sanktuarium powstało na wyraźne żądanie Najświętszej Maryi Panny podczas pierwszego Objawienia Juanowi Diego mającego miejsce na wzgórzu Tepeyac dnia 9 grudnia 1531 roku. W miejscu, gdzie Matka Boża objawiła się ubogiemu Indianinowi, wkrótce wybudowano małą kaplicę. Później ją powiększono, a z czasem wybudowano olbrzymią bazylikę pod wezwaniem Matki Bożej z Guadalupe. Od samego początku jej istnienia dokonują się tu nieustannie cudowne nawrócenia i uzdrowienia. Obecny kościół został wybudowany w pobliżu wcześniejszej, 16-wiecznej Bazyliki ukończonej w 1709 roku. Kiedy stara bazylika, wybudowana na podmokłym gruncie, w wyniku trzęsień ziemi poczęła obracać się w ruinę, kilkanaście lat temu powstało nowe Sanktuarium, w którym został umieszczony cudowny obraz. Nowe Sanktuarium zostało ukończone w 1976, a zaprojektował je wielki meksykański architekt Pedro Ramirez Vasquez (autor m.in. Muzeum Antropologicznego i Stadionu Azteków).Nowa Bazylika przypomina swoim kształtem wielki, okrągły namiot, wznoszony niegdyś na pustyni, ten, który Bóg polecił Mojżeszowi wznieść u stóp góry Synaj. Na szczycie Bazyliki znajduje się krzyż, którego podstawą jest litera M oznaczająca zarówno Maryję jak i Meksyk. Nowa Bazylika może pomieścić ok. 12 tys. osób, a na samym placu przed Bazyliką jest miejsce dla ok. 30 tys. To właśnie w nowej Bazylice, na centralnym pilastrze, znajduje się cudowny Obraz Najświętszej Maryi Panny z Guadalupe. Dzięki okrągłemu kształtowi Bazyliki, obraz Matki Bożej może być widziany z każdego punktu kościoła.

7 WHAT CAN YOU DO? The crowd wanted to know, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" (John 6:28). They were looking for a way to do miracles, signs, wonders, and they expected Jesus to prove himself by doing this for them, too. They had just witnessed the multiplication of the loaves, yet it seemed not to impress them! They were asking for yet another "sign." Jesus directed their attention to the meaning of the miracles: God's loving faithfulness to them in their need. Manna in the desert and loaves in the wilderness were the signs of Jesus' gift of himself to us in love. What Jesus was looking for in these people was an attentive heart. He wanted them to see that God was providing for their needs with love and faithfulness, and had always done so. But the people didn't get it. They had just witnessed a miracle, and yet they still were asking for "a sign." What counts as a sign? Do we need to be hit over the head? Every day we witness miracles, and yet we don't really see them, or believe that they really come from God. Every day we are bread for each other, or someone is bread for us, and yet we do not make the connection! No doubt the people in the desert failed to connect the quail and the manna with their crying out to God for food. God answers our prayers and knows our needs, and sends people to us and us to others, and yet we look for other explanations of these "miracles" in our lives. BELIEVE! God's faithful love is shown all around us, every day. We cry out to God, and yet we often explain away God's answers to our prayers, looking for something more spectacular than merely what we need or even what we have asked for. We have what we need: the Bread of Life. Today's Readings: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15; Psalm 78:3-4, 23-25, 54; Ephesians 4:17, 20-24; John 6:24-35 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the "pious ladies," as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the "rule" of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the "reign of terror," and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mission, even though they discovered in the "rule" that such work was officially off-limits for the contemplative life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States.
