Cardinal Cupich s Column Renew My Church Dreaming Big about the Archdiocese of Chicago Americans are known as a people who dream, and dream big. As a country of immigrants, dreaming is in our national DNA. The dream of a better life gave immigrants the courage to leave their families and ancestral homes and start over. Their dreams sustained them as they shouldered unimaginable burdens, inspired them to take risks, and gave them the daring to do things never done before. wmlego@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 29 And just as dreaming big has distinguished us as Americans, it has also marked the Catholic Church in this country, particularly in this archdiocese. Catholic immigrants came to this land not only with their dreams but also with their deep faith, energizing them to build churches, schools, and hospitals. They formed and sustained vibrant communities, enriched by the cultures of their places of origin. Responding to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Catholics drew on the resilience they learned as immigrants to rebuild. Like the mythical phoenix, which today adorns the crest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, these hearty dreamers lifted themselves from the ashes, making the Church even more vibrant and alive. As the first American pope and a son of immigrants, Pope Francis is calling the entire Church to dream, and dream big. He wrote in The Joy of the Gospel : I dream of a missionary option, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the church s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today s world rather than for her self-preservation. jdowling42@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 15 I have long shared this dream. It was a dream that began to stir in me when I entered the seminary just after the close of the Second Vatican Council. Over my 40-plus years as a priest, I have become even more convinced of the great potential of our parishes, when vibrant and alive with the Gospel, to transform lives and make a singular contribution to the world. That conviction has only increased since becoming archbishop of Chicago, as I witness every day a vitality in our parishes that enriches the lives of so many people. Admittedly, the fulfillment of this dream is a patchwork of success and failure. Every parish has its strengths and weaknesses in fulfilling the mission of Christ. While measuring parish vitality is complex, if I were asked to describe a parish of my dreams, it would be a parish that adopts and pursues these seven priorities: 1) We bring people to Christ: The parish strives to evangelize its members to live more fully as intentional disciples. Como país de inmigrantes, soñar está en nuestro ADN nacional. El sueño de tener una vida mejor dio a los inmigrantes el valor de dejar a sus familias y sus hogares ancestrales, y comenzar de nuevo. Al responder al Gran Incendio de Chicago de 1871, los católicos se inspiraron en la capacidad de resistencia y recuperación que adquirieron como inmigrantes para llevar a cabo la reconstrucción. Como el mítico ave fénix, que hoy adorna el escudo de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago, estos cordiales soñadores se levantaron de las cenizas, haciendo a la Iglesia aún más vibrante y viva. Siendo el primer papa americano e hijo de inmigrantes, el Papa Francisco está llamando a toda la Iglesia a soñar, y soñar en grande. En La alegría del Evangelio escribió: Sueño con una opción misionera capaz de transformarlo todo, para que las costumbres, los estilos, los horarios, el lenguaje y toda estructura eclesial se convierta en un cauce adecuado para la evangelización del mundo actual más que para la autopreservación. Durante mucho tiempo he compartido este sueño. Era un sueño que comenzó a agitarse en mi interior cuando entré en el seminario justo después de la clausura del Concilio Vaticano II. Durante mis más de cuarenta años como sacerdote me he ido convenciendo cada vez más del gran potencial que tienen nuestras parroquias, cuando vibran y viven con el Evangelio, para transformar vidas y hacer una contribución singular al mundo. Esa convicción sólo ha aumentado desde que me convertí en arzobispo de Chicago, pues soy testigo cada día de la vitalidad de nuestras parroquias que enriquece la vida de tantas personas. Es cierto, el cumplimiento de este sueño es un mosaico de éxito y fracaso. Cada parroquia tiene sus fortalezas y debilidades en el cumplimiento de la misión de Cristo. Si bien medir la vitalidad de una parroquia es algo complejo, si me piden que describa la parroquia de mis sueños, sería una parroquia que adopta y persigue las siguientes siete prioridades. 1. Traemos a las personas a Cristo: La parroquia se esfuerza por evangelizar a sus miembros para que vivan de una manera más plena como discípulos intencionales. A su vez, los discípulos intencionales de la parroquia evangelizan continuamente a otros para dar a conocer la presencia de la Iglesia y de la misericordia de Cristo ahí, entre ellos, en el barrio. 2. Nos apoyamos mutuamente para conocer a Cristo de una manera más profunda: La parroquia permite un proceso permanente de formación para profundizar en la fe y en la relación con Cristo mediante la transmisión tanto de las doctrinas de la Iglesia como de la Tradición a los feligreses de todas las edades. 3. Encontramos a Cristo y recibimos su alimento a través de la oración y la adoración: La parroquia presenta una intención para desarrollar una cultura y una tradición de la oración, la devoción y la liturgia bien preparada, con la Eucaristía como la fuente y cumbre. 4. Construimos lazos entre nosotros para sostener nuestra vida en Cristo: La parroquia representa una verdadera comunidad católica que es consciente de su solidaridad en Cristo con toda la Iglesia de Chicago y con la Iglesia Universal. Es inclusiva y armoniosa, respetando y apreciando la diversidad en todas sus formas como un valor en el culto y en la vida comunitaria. Jako kraj imigrantów, zdolność posiadania marzeń jest wpisana w nasze narodowe DNA. Katoliccy imigranci przybyli na tę ziemię nie tylko jedynie ze swoimi marzeniami, ale także ze swoją głęboką wiarą, dającą im siłę do budowania kościołów, szkół i szpitali. Ukształtowali i utrzymywali pulsujące życiem społeczności ubogacane kulturą miejsc, z których przybyli. Odpowiadając na wielki pożar Chicago w 1871 roku, odbudowując miasto, katolicy bazowali na odporności nabytej, kiedy byli imigrantami. Jak mityczny feniks zdobiący dziś herb Archidiecezja Chicago, ci autentyczni marzyciele podnieśli się z popiołów sprawiając, że Kościół stał się jeszcze bardziej żywotny i dynamiczny. Jako pierwszy amerykański papież i syn imigrantów, Papież Franciszek wzywa cały Kościół do tego, by marzył i marzył o wielkich sprawach. To przekonanie jeszcze bardziej się utwierdziło we mnie odkąd zostałem arcybiskupem Chicago, gdzie każdego dnia jestem świadkiem aktywności naszych parafii, ubogacających życie wielu osób. Muszę przyznać, że na wypełnienie tego marzenia składa się mozaika sukcesów i upadków. Każda parafia ma swoje mocne strony, ale ma również swoje słabości w wypełnianiu misji Chrystusa. Choć oszacowanie witalności parafii jest złożonym zadaniem, to gdybym został poproszony o opisanie parafii moich marzeń, byłaby to parafia, która przyjmuje i wypełnia siedem poniższych priorytetów. Prowadzimy ludzi do Chrystusa: Parafia dąży do ewangelizowania swoich członków, aby coraz pełniej i coraz świadomiej stawali się oni uczniami Jezusa. W zamian za to, świadomi uczniowie, nie zaprzestają ewangelizowania innych przez uświadamianie obecności Kościoła i miłosierdzia Chrystusa swoim grupom społecznym. Wspieramy siebie nawzajem w coraz głębszym poznawaniu Chrystusa: Parafia umożliwia trwający przez całe życie proces formacyjny, służący pogłębianiu wiary i relacji z Chrystusem przez przekazywanie nauki Kościoła i Tradycji parafianom wszystkich grup wiekowych. Spotykamy Chrystusa, a przez modlitwę i sprawowanie kultu otrzymujemy pokarm duchowy: Parafia świadomie rozwija kulturę modlitwy, tworzy tradycję modlitwy, pobożności i dobrze przygotowanej liturgii na czele z Eucharystią, jako Źródłem i Szczytem. Budujemy więzy pośród parafian, aby podtrzymywać i rozwijać życie w Chrystusie: Parafia jest przykładem autentycznej wspólnoty katolickiej, świadomej swojej solidarności w Chrystusie z całym lokalnym Kościołem Chicago i z Kościołem powszechnym. Jest ona pełną harmonii wspólnotą integrującą ludzi, szanującą i doceniającą znaczenie różnorodności we wszystkich jej formach, jako kapitału życia modlitewnego i wspólnotowego. St. Vincent de Paul February is promising to be another cold winter month, a time in which the family looks forward to a steaming bowl of macaroni and cheese as a special after school treat for the kids. Mac and cheese is always in demand, especially in the winter, and after our big Christmas Food Distribution, the supply in the food pantry is very low. Consequently we are asking for your help with donations of the following items In February: BOXES OF MACARONII AND CHEESE Please folks, check your donations and make sure that the dates are not expired, as we are unable to use expired products. Your donations can be placed in the box located in the vestibule of the church when you come to Mass, or they can be taken to the Rectory during normal business hours. Thunderbolt Baseball Outing St. Joseph - St. Patrick s Dinner ST. JOSEPH ST. PATRICK DINNER The St. Anne s Society will once again be hosting it s annual fund raiser for the Felician Sisters at our St. Joseph St. Patrick Dinner Dance. It will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 8:30 PM. We will be serving corned beef and cabbage, polish sausage, chicken and more. There will also be the traditional St. Joseph s Sweet Table. Winter is here and before you know it we will be enjoying the Summer. We will also be enjoying baseball.
