SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER May 25, 2014 I will ask the Father, and he will give you.the Spirit of truth. - John 14:16-17 THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in today s first reading from the Act of the Apostles? When Peter and John imposed hands on those who had been baptized, they received the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of confirmation. The reading from the First Letter of Peter and the passage from John s Gospel both consider the results of our baptism and confirmation. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have to suffer for what we believe. In today s Gospel Jesus speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a Paraclete, one who will stand with us to defend us. Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us, I will not leave you orphans. He has never left his followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy Spirit to guide us. MEMORIAL DAY On Monday, May 26th, the nation will observe Memorial Day. It is not a time for celebration, but rather, a solemn day of commemoration; a day set aside to honor the memory of our deceased, especially our servicemen and women who paid the Supreme Sacrifice defending the freedoms that we all enjoy. The Veterans will arrive at St. Joseph Garden of Peace at 9:55am and our parishioners are requested to assemble at the cross a few minutes prior to that time to welcome them and begin the brief prayer service. We have many veterans resting in our cemetery and we owe them our gratitude and respect. In observance of Memorial Day the rectory office will be closed. MAY DEVOTIONS Please join us on Sunday, after the 11:00am Mass and daily on Monday through Friday at 7:00pm to express our love for the mother of our Lord and to petition her for special blessings from her Son, Jesus Christ. Page 3 CARDINAL DZIWISZ VISIT/ REFLECTION I would like to express words of gratitude to all our parishioners who attended Mass with Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz, Bishop McManus, Retired Bishop Reilly and Abbott of the Benedictine Fathers, Xavier Connelly The church was filled to capacity and everybody wanted to hear first hand from the person who served and lived with a Saint for almost forty years. The atmosphere in the church resembled the celebration at St. Peter s Square at the Vatican on April 27th. The uplifting music of our Basilica choir added much to this joyful celebration. Needless to say, the presence of a large number of children, including the first communion class, students of St. Joseph School, Children of Mary, altar servers, scouts and the youngsters of the Piast group all contributed to this special occasion. We were pleased to welcome the Honor Guard and members of the Knights of Columbus, together with our parish ministries, representatives of our organizations and sodalities, members of the John Paul II Foundation of New England and ushers. At the beginning of the Mass the relics of St. John Paul II were officially presented by Cardinal Dziwisz to Bishop McManus and Msgr. Czarnecki. The relics are enshrined at the Blessed Mother altar and therefore this will help us to experience his presence in our Basilica. May St. John Paul II intercede for all our parishioners and our school. Sunday Forty Hour Eucharistic Devotion was a very meaningful experience with the presence of Bishop Michael Cote, Ordinary of the Norwich, Ct. diocese and priests from various parishes. Our Basilica Choir presented an inspiring rendition of Stearns Vespers. I am grateful to all of those who have enough faith and trust in Jesus Christ and attended this solemn devotion. On a personal note, we offer many devotional practices in our Basilica and we, as your priests, would expect that more parishioners would want to take advantage because the time may come when these liturgical services will no longer be available. NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH We ask parishioners and friends to join the Knights of Columbus, following 5p.m. Mass, for Novena and Devotion to our Patron, St. Joseph who was a man of integrity. This is an opportune time to ask St. Joseph for the grace of a firm faith and sound moral principles to light our path. Please join us for this novena combined with May devotions. ASCENSION OF OUR LORD On Thursday, May 29th we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven. Christ s bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of all humanity. Please refer to our mass schedule for times of masses. Page 5 WIZYTA KARDYNAŁA DZIWISZA W czasie Eucharystii na zakończenie Czterdziestogodzinnego Nabożeństwa nasza Bazylika była wypełniona do ostatniego miejsca. Wszyscy chcieli zobaczyć i usłyszeć Kardynała Stanisława Dziwisza, człowieka, który przez wiele lat pracował i żył w otoczeniu wielkiego świętego. Atmosfera w świątyni przypominała tę z 27 kwietnia na Watykanie podczas uroczystości kanonizacji św. Jana Pawła II. Obecni byli również biskupi z naszej diecezji: ks. Bp Robert McManus oraz ks. Bp emeryt Daniel Railly, a także przeor Benedyktynów ojciec Xavier Connelly. Wspaniała oprawa muzyczna w wykonaniu naszego chóru oraz obecność organizacji i grup parafialnych przyczyniła się do jeszcze większej podniosłości całej celebracji. Niech św.
