A CYO basketball game between two neighboring parishes. Parents of the young players scream insults and threats at one another and assert their superiority. A Protestant and a Catholic church sit on adjoining properties. Each is vigilant about having parking violators removed from its own private parking lot. An old pastor retires but continues to reside at the parish. A new pastor arrives and quickly finds his faith community choosing sides against him. Saint Paul addresses similar disagreements in the early church at Corinth. He encourages the church there to make up their differences and to be united again in their belief and practice. Today s first reading from Isaiah speaks of a people weighed down by the yoke of sin and darkness. Certainly the bickering and differences among us can be classified as such. The Gospel tells of the beginning ministry of Jesus. The Light has come, encouraging us to repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. PRESENTATION OF THE LORD On Sunday, February 2nd, we will observe the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, sometimes referred to as Candlemass Day. On this day we commemorate the presentation of Christ in the temple and the ritual purification of the Virgin Mary. Blessing of candles will take place at the vigil mass on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 4:00pm and all masses on Sunday, Feb. 2nd. Candles will be available near the sanctuary stairs, you may also bring your own candles to be blessed.

3 Page 3 OPENING OF CATHOLIC SCHOOL WEEK Catholic School Week observance begins on Sunday, Jan. 26th with a solemn liturgy at 9:30am for students, parents and parishioners of St. Joseph Basilica. Msgr. James Moroney, Rector of St. John s Seminary, Brighton, MA, will be Main Celebrant and Homilist. The theme for 2014 is Catholic Schools: Observing Communities of Faith, Knowledge & Service. The Catholic identity of St. Joseph School is centered in the person of Jesus Christ, contributes to the evangelizing mission of the Church, distinguished by excellence in education, committed to educate the whole child, rooted in a Christian anthropology, sustained by the Gospel witness, shaped by Communion and Community is accessible to all students. The Partners in Education Award will be presented during Mass. After Mass everyone is invited to a reception and brief program in the cafeteria followed by Open House at 11:00am- 12:30pm. This is an opportunity for parents seeking excellence in education and formation of character of their child to visit and learn what SJS has to offer. At St. Joseph School many exciting activities are planned during the week On Wed. Jan 29th pasta dinner 5-6:30pm followed by Open House (please refer to last week s bulletin for details). PARTNERS IN EDUCATION AWARD On Sunday, Jan. 26th during the liturgy at 9:30am this distinguished award for the year 2014 will be presented to Mr. John Gogolinski and Dr. John Kalinowski. The award was established several years ago to recognize someone who goes beyond the call of duty has dedicated his/ her life to the educational achievements of our students. John Gogolinski, an alumnus of St. Joseph School, is Chairman of the Gym project and a major donor. In addition, he and his wife, Jane are involved in several parish ministries including the Altar Guild and visiting sick and homebound parishioners. They provide help when needed and also donate resources for special parish events. John also assists in the publishing of our St. Joseph School newsletter and serves on various subcommittees for the construction of the gym. Dr. John Kalinowski is a native of Worcester, and although he is not a graduate of our school, he is known for his dedication to Catholic education and has been a leading benefactor and major donor of our school and our Basilica and a member of the Finance Board for many years. Dr. John manages a successful dental practice in Dudley. On behalf of our students and parish community, we congratulate both these prominent gentlemen and offer our prayers and best wishes. PASTA DINNER in conjunction with Catholic School Week will be held on Wed., Jan. 29th from 5-6:30pm in the school cafeteria. Tickets will be available at the door-$5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children 5-12 children under 5 eat for free. NOVENA AND DEVOTIONS TO ST. JOSEPH Novena and Devotions to St. Joseph, foster-father of Jesus will be held on Wed., Jan. 29 at 7:00pm. We ask members of our Parish Council to process with the statue of St. Joseph from the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the sanctuary. This is an opportunity for us to dedicate ourselves to our patron and ask guidance, God s blessings on many activities, personal difficulties or family issues. Please use the prayer intention request forms available in the chapel. Please print your intentions legibly and place in the box provided. We encourage parishioners and friends to join the Parish Council on Jan. 29th. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Next Sunday, February 2nd at 3:00pm we will pray to the Divine Mercy for special graces needed in our lives and in the world. The Chaplet, which God gave to the world through Sr. Faustina, is a beautiful prayer that has a powerful efficacy to repair the hurt wrought by sin. If you never attended this devotion, please come and join the faithful in this beautiful expression of our belief in the powers of the Divine Mercy. THANK YOU Our portable microphone had served its purpose and needed to be replaced. We obtained a new one at a cost of $500. Our parishioners Joe and Sue Werbecki graciously stepped forward and contributed $250 toward this purchase. May God bless them for their generosity and concern of our parish. A sincere Thank You to the Altar Guild, and especially to the extra parishioners who came to the church on Monday morning to assist in the removal and storage of the Christmas decorations. Ed office at KRONIKA PARAFIALNA DRUGA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 26 stycznia 2014 "Ufaj Panu, bądź mężny, niech się twe serce umocni, ufaj Panu!" (Ps 27, 14) Niewielu z nas przeżywa radość z przynależności do jednego Chrystusowego Kościoła. Ten kto odkrył tę prawdę, odnajduje się w Kościele, jak w jednej autentycznie kochającej się rodzinie. Ponieważ jest to rodzina złożona z niedoskonałych ludzi, może przeżywać różne spięcia, nawet dramaty, ale zawsze jest to jeden dom, w którym dla każdego jest miejsce, wsparcie i zadanie. Gdybyśmy lepiej współpracowali z łaską, nie byłoby tak wiele rozdarć, łez i krwawych ran w naszych wspólnotach. Bo jedność i zgoda, to nie tylko sprawa nasza, ale przede wszystkim wielkie pragnienie Boga, kochającego nas Ojca. Druga kolekta w przyszłym tygodniu będzie przeznaczona na Zobowiązania Diecezjalne. 5 Page 5 OFIAROWANIE PAŃSKIE W niedzielę, 2 lutego, będziemy obchodzili Święto Ofiarowania Pańskiego, tradycyjnie określane jako Święto Matki Bożej Gromnicznej. W tym dniu wspominamy ofiarowanie Jezusa w świątyni i rytualne oczyszczenie Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Błogosławieństwo świec odbędzie się na każdej Mszy św. z Msza o godz. 16:00 w sobotę włącznie. Świece będą dostępny w pobliżu schodów przy prezbiterium, można też przynieść własne świece. ROZPOCZĘCIE TYGODNIA SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH Tematem tegorocznych obchodów jest hasło: " Wspólnoty wiary, wiedzy i służby!". Dzisiejszej niedzieli rozpoczynamy obchody Tygodnia Szkół Katolickich. Koronka, którą Bóg dał światu za pośrednictwem siostry Faustyny, to piękna modlitwa, która ma potężny moc naprawy bólu i ran wyrządzonych przez grzech.
