Wagner Word of Life: Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. - Pope Saint John Paul II THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH December 28, 2014 My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all the peoples. - Luke 2:30-31 WE ARE GOD S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. The second collection next week is designated for Parish obligations to the Diocese. HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY This is Holy Family Sunday when we celebrate families. By recalling the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, we remember who we could become. Each father must take Saint Joseph as his model of patience and fortitude. Each mother must take the Blessed Virgin Mary as her model of gentle strength and care. Each child must take Jesus as an example of obedience and trust. After each Mass this weekend there will be a special blessing for all families. May God build our parish community, through the intercession of our good patron, St. Joseph, with families rich in the Christian virtues, families of prayer and charity, families which are forgiving and holy. FIRST FRIDAY The First Friday adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will take place after the 7:00am Mass on January 2nd and continue throughout the day concluding at 3:00pm with the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy followed by benediction. All Sacred Heart Society members and parishioners are cordially invited to join us at 7:00am which is designated for deceased members. Adorers are asked to attend at their scheduled time. A Mass will be celebrated at 7:00pm in the Polish language.

3 Page 3 IN THE SPIRIT OF GRATITUDE We would like to thank the many parishioners who remembered us during the Christmas Season with prayers, Christmas wishes and generous gifts. This is a clear sign of the appreciation of the faithful and your willingness to work in the spirit of unity in a common mission for our parish. The variety of gifts for the children, for the elderly and for those in need were gratefully appreciated and served to make their Christmas happy. Also the tuition gifts for those whose financial status may have recently changed due to unforeseen circumstances is appreciated. This help will allow those who require assistance the opportunity to continue to receive a solid Catholic education to form their character for life. ALTAR GUILD Once again our Altar Guild Angels under the direction of Sylvia and Fred Kitka created a beautiful vision for all to experience at our Basilica at this special time of the year. Our dedicated volunteers spent countless hours to transform our Basilica into an atmosphere for parishioners, visitors and friends of reliving the first Christmas. May the Christmas Season fill these devoted volunteers with lasting gifts from the New Born Messiah. MARK YOUR CALENDAR - On Sunday, January 11th at 3:00pm everyone is invited to our Christmas Concert at St. Joseph Basilica. Choirs from several Polish parishes will participate. More information in next week s bulletin. HAPPY NEW YEAR As the year 2014 concludes and 2015 is being ushered in, various thoughts and feelings cross our mind. We are grateful to God who blessed us with many gifts, especially the gift of life, health and good friends. The New Year begins with the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. At this time of the year we usually make many resolutions but the most important one is our discipleship and our outreach to those who do not worship with us or have drifted away from their faith. We ask you to make a extra effort to begin the New Year by stepping forward to make Jesus the center of our life by participating in Divine Worship. The year 2015is the Family Year when Pope Francis will come to Philadelphia. Perhaps, it is fitting to look closely where we stand with God as a family. Are children, being cared for and encouraged to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? Let us pray that this will become our ongoing priority throughout the year. NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK The 34th Annual National Migration Week will begin on Sun., Jan. 5th and conclude at the 9:30am family Mass on Sun., Jan. 11th. The 2015 theme is We are one family under God. Children of different nationalities who attend our school will participate wearing their national costumes and carrying flags representing their countries. Following Mass there will be a reception in the school cafeteria where you can sample some national food from various cultures. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK We will celebrate CATHOLIC SCHOOL WEEK beginning Sunday, Jan. 25th at the 9:30am Liturgy with Msgr. James Moroney, Rector of St. John s Seminary in Brighton as main celebrant and homilist and conclude on Sat., Jan 31st. The theme this year is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. The students and staff of SJS and the HSA are planning special events which will take place all week. We kindly ask all parishioners, alumni and parents to support the gym/parish center project and pray for the St. Joseph School children and catholic education, especially during this Christmas season. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY January 4th is the first Sunday of the month, therefore we will sing the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy at 3:00pm followed by Benediction. For this first Divine Mercy Devotion in the New Year let us come together and ask for God s blessings on our family, our plans on our journey of faith through the Holy Rosary Sodality is sponsoring their Annual Oplatek Dinner on Sunday, January 11th at Point Breeze Restaurant, Webster. Hors-d oeuvres will be served at 12 noon followed by dinner at 12:30pm with a choice of panko chicken breast, baked haddock or London broil. Everyone is invited. Dr. Kalinowski s thoughtfulness in sharing his blessings helps us in our financial operational budget. Jest to dla nas wyraźny znak ducha wdzięczności wiernych, którym posługujemy oraz wspaniała zachęta do pracy w duchu jedności, we wspólnej misji budowania Kościoła Chrystusowego ku wiecznej chwale Boga i dla zbawienia ludzi. Ks. prał. Antoni Czarnecki Ks. Grzegorz Chodkowski JESTEŚMY ŚWIĘTĄ RODZINĄ BOGA Pismo Święte jest wypełnione wieloma historiami bezdzietnych par, które w sposób cudowny otrzymały od Boga dar dzieci. Z pewnością najbardziej znana z nich jest historia z dzisiejszego pierwszego czytania, z którego Łukasz czerpał inspirację, kiedy opowiadał o cudownych narodzinach Jana Chrzciciela i bardziej jeszcze cudowne narodziny Jezusa. W każdym przypadku mamy przykład tych, którzy zaufali Bogu. Oprócz zaufania w historiach tych pojawia się również aspekt poddania się woli Bożej. Małe dziecko, zrodzone ze skromnych rodziców z niewielkiej mieściny i staje się światłością dla całego świata. To jest właśnie to, do czego my, jako członkowie świętej rodziny Bożej jesteśmy powołani do czynienia każdego dnia: nie wierzyć tylko w siebie i w nasz sposób myślenia i pojmowania świata, ale otwierać się i zawierzać wspaniałej obietnicy Boga.

5 Page 5 NIEDZIELA ŚWIĘTEJ RODZINY Dziś, tuż po Bożym Narodzeniu, obchodzimy Niedzielę Świętej Rodziny, kiedy to świętujemy wszystkie rodziny. Przywodząc na pamięć Świętą Rodzinę Jezusa, Maryi i Józefa, przypominamy sobie kim my powinniśmy się stawać. Każdy ojciec powinien zobaczyć w św. Józefie wzór cierpliwości i męstwa. Każda matka powinna ujrzeć w Maryi wzór delikatnej siły i opiekuńczości. Każde dziecko natomiast w Jezusie powinno widzieć przykład posłuszeństwa i zaufania. Po każdej dzisiejszej Mszy św. będziemy udzielali specjalnego błogosławieństwa dla rodzin. Niech Bóg, za wstawiennictwem naszego dobrego patrona, św. Józefa umacnia naszą wspólnotę parafialną, poprzez rozwijanie rodzin bogatych w cnoty chrześcijańskie, rodzin pełnych modlitwy i miłości, rodzin, które są wyrozumiałe i święte. OFIARODAWCY ANGEL TREE Chcielibyśmy wyrazić ogromną wdzięczność wszystkim, którzy odpowiedzieli na prośby umieszczone na choinkach w Bazylice. Różnorodne dary ofiarowane dzieciom i ludziom w potrzebie sprawią, że ich Święta będą bardziej radosne, a miłość Boża bardziej odczuwalna poprzez odruchy dobroci ludzkiego serca.. Również wsparcie w opłaceniu edukacji dla rodzin, które ostatnio przeżywają trudności finansowe jest nie do przecenienia. Pomoc ta pozwoli tym, którzy potrzebują wsparcia, na kontynuację edukacji katolickiej, która kształtuje i formuje charakter na całe życie. Dziękujemy za hojność w dzieleniu się darami płynącymi z Bożego błogosławieństwa pośród naszej rodziny parafialnej. BOŻE NARODZENIE W BAZYLICE ŚW. JÓZEFA Jesteśmy bardzo szczęśliwi mogąc świętować Boże Narodzenie w Bazylice św. Józefa. Malownicze dekoracje, śpiewy chóru parafialnego i dziecięcego zapewniły niesamowite przeżycia wszystkim tym, którzy wzięli udział w czasie świątecznej liturgii. Dziękujemy dyrektorowi chórów, panu Robertowi Wójcik za jego niestrudzoną pracę w tworzeniu niesamowitego efektu powstającego z połączenia utalentowanych głosów śpiewaków i wysokiej klasy muzyki. Jak zawsze, gościliśmy wielu gości, którzy przybyli, aby dołączyć do nas na w tym szczególnym czasie. ŚWIĄTECZNE DEKORACJE Po raz kolejny Altar Guild pod kierunkiem Sylwii i Frederyka Kitka stworzył piękną dekoracją świąteczną, która pozwoliła lepiej przeżyć ten wspaniały czas. Oddani wolontariusze spędzili wiele godzin, aby zmienić naszą Bazyliką w miejsce, gdzie mogliśmy głęboko przeżyć tajemnicę Bożego wcielenia. Niech w okresie Boże Narodzenie Bóg wypełni wolontariuszy satysfakcją z wykonanej pracy, która jeszcze bardziej spotęguje radość Bożego narodzenia.
