The Lord calls us to love God and to love our neighbor. Every day we are presented with opportunities to love our neighbor and help him carry his cross. These opportunities aren t usually big events, they are usually ordinary occurrences like helping someone carry their groceries or holding the door open for someone. The key is putting the other person s needs before your own and not expecting anything in return. PALM SUNDAY April 13, 2014 God greatly exalted {Christ} and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. - Philippians 2:9 THE ATTITUDE OF CHRIST JESUS The Lenten cycle brings us to this mixed Sunday of palm branches and painful suffering. Our liturgy opens by recalling Jesus triumphant entry along the main road into Jerusalem, then moves quickly to the back streets of betrayal and humiliation, the courtyards of torture and abandonment, the hill of execution. Isaiah s strange and gripping Song of the Servant of God was to become the song of Jesus. It is the song of one who strides forward consistently in the face of criticism, even scorn: I have not rebelled, have not turned back. It is to become our song, as faithful followers of Jesus Christ. How are we to react when we hear the account of the passion and death of the Lord? Paul tells us that our attitude must be Christ s, who emptied himself, taking the form of a slave. We pray that we may absorb the attitude of Christ and face life squarely in its triumph and its pain. We encourage and invite everyone to be reconciled with God and one another and joyfully celebrate the resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. Visiting priests from different parishes will be available for your convenience. Confessions will be heard in both English and Polish. Tuesday Confessions from 7:00-8:00pm Confession - every day after 6:30am Mass and Saturday 3:00pm.

3 Page 3 NOVENA AND DEVOTIONS TO ST. JOSEPH-will be held on Wed., April 16th at 7:00pm. Members of the St. Joseph Polish Women s Club will process with the statue of St. Joseph from the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the sanctuary. Prayer intention request forms are available in the chapel. Please print your intentions legibly and place in the box provided. LITURGICAL SERVICES DURING HOLY WEEK TRIDUUM Why we celebrate one event over three days. The Paschal Triduum, Latin for three days, commemorates Christ s redemptive passage through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinct parts. In accordance with the custom in biblical times, each day begins in the evening. The first day of the Triduum begins with the Lord s supper on the evening of Holy Thursday. In the silence of the tomb on Good Friday the death of Jesus, Son of God, is confirmed. He did not simply lose consciousness, he truly died. Holy Saturday, while the Church silently prepares for the Easter Vigil celebration in the evening, the reality of Jesus death and resurrection comes into focus. Easter morning is the watersheds event of our life of faith. The resurrection gives baptism its meaning, alleluia its joy and the Church its hope. For the full 50 days of the Easter Season, the Church will rejoice and celebrate the wonders of these three days. HOLY THURSDAY. Mass and distribution of Communion at 7am for those who cannot participate in the evening services. Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7pm (bilingual). This sacred liturgy commemorates the establishment of the sacrament of the Eucharist and the Priesthood. We invite parishioners, all the school children and their parents to participate in this solemn liturgy. Rite of Reception of the Holy Oils, Washing of the Feet of the disciples before the Last Supper and procession to the Repository will take place. It has been a tradition to visit area Catholic churches during the evening to say a prayer at the Repository. Keep this tradition on-going with your children as a family. Our Basilica will be open until 10pm for your private prayers and reflection. GOOD FRIDAY. No morning Mass. At 3pm the Liturgy of the Lord s Passion will begin at our Basilica with adoration of the relics of the Holy Cross and distribution of Communion. At 6:30pm traditional services at the Holy Sepulcher with meditation in English and singing in Polish led by the Sacred Heart Society, followed by the singing of Gorzkie Zale. At 7:30pm reflection/adoration in the Polish language. Reminder: Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence, which means only one full meatless meal and two light meals may be taken. Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. The offering given at adoration of the Cross is designated for the Holy Land which sustains various ministries and assists the Franciscan Friars in their works and to preserve the Holy Land s precious Christian Community. The Good Friday Collection is the primary means of support for this work. HOLY SATURDAY. No morning Mass. Swieconka-Traditional blessing of food will take place on Holy Saturday in the school cafeteria every half-hour from 9am to 12 noon and from 13pm. If anyone wishes to have a priest bless food at their home please call the rectory before Apr. 16th. The Easter Vigil will begin at 7:39pm with the blessing of new fire, paschal candle, water and readings followed by the Resurrection Liturgy. During this important celebration the Basilica choir will assist the liturgy. At the Easter Vigil we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist and the Rite of Reception into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Note: Holy Water will be available at the conclusion of the services and on Easter Sunday. EASTER SUNDAY. The Resurrection Celebration (bilingual will take place at 6am with a solemn procession from the Holy Sepulcher followed by the Mass. We kindly ask all parish organizations to take part in the services on this most solemn day of the year. The 9:30am Mass is the special children s Mass and we invite all the parents to participate with their children. EASTER SUNDAY COLLECTION FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE. With the steadily increasing enrollment at St. Joseph School, new technology and new enthusiasm among the parents and parishioners has raised the bar for an advanced curriculum. Unfortunately, all these improvements carry with them significant costs. Therefore, I ask parents, parishioners alumni, visitors and friends to generously respond according to their means to this traditional Easter Sunday collection. THANK YOU We are grateful to Mr. Dariusz Ochocki for his assistance at our Basilica, St. Joseph School and St. Joseph Garden of Peace. He spent many hours in plowing these areas of tons of snow, making it possible for us to be able to use the parking lots. Personally, I am grateful for his work for re-placing half of the deteriorated roof on 52 Whitcomb Street, free of charge. He will also replace the roof at the handicap entry on Maynard Street. We have been patching that roof for several years because of leakage into the vestibule. A new plastic roof will be durable for years to come. We are thankful to Mr. Ochocki for his generosity and his spirit of caring. HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION Members of the HSA will meet on Tuesday, April 15th at 6:30pm in the school cafeteria. The conference includes Bishop McManus and keynote speakers that are experts in the spiritual care of the patient and bioethics challenges in healthcare with continuing education credit available for healthcare professionals. (Flp 2, 9) Metoda, jaką przyjął Chrystus w czynieniu dobra na ziemi, przypomina działanie konspiracyjne. Wobec nieprzychylnych dla Niego układów musiał działać w ukryciu. Nawet gdy rozpoczął publiczne nauczanie, atakowany przez faryzeuszy, saduceuszy, uczonych w Piśmie, zwolenników Heroda ciągle schodził z linii ciosu. Jego zasady postępowania były proste: Mieć czas na czynienie dobra. Nie wdawać się w niepotrzebne spory. Zająć się twórczą pracą u podstaw. Doskonalić ludzkie sumienia, wzmacniać wiarę, prowadzić wartościowe jednostki na coraz wyższe stopnie miłości. Na bezowocne dyskusje szkoda czasu i sił.

Kościół celebruje Triduum jako jedno wydarzenie składające się z trzech odrębnych części. Zgodnie ze zwyczajem w czasach biblijnych, każdy dzień zaczyna się wieczorem. W Wielki Czwartek zapraszamy na Mszę Wieczerzy Pańskiej o godz. 19:00 kiedy to będziemy świętowali ustanowienie sakramentów Eucharystii i Kapłaństwa. Wielkoczwartkowa liturgia jest ubogacona o dodatkowe uroczyste elementy: przyjęcie Świętych Olejów, konsekrowanych przez biskupa w Katedrze, obmycie nóg przedstawicielom parafii oraz przeniesienie Najświętszego Sakramentu do Ciemnicy. Tradycją jest również prywatna adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu po zakończonej Liturgii. Zachęcamy do rodzinnych nawiedzin. Drzwi naszej Bazyliki będą otwarte tego dnia do godz. 22:00. Dla tych, którzy nei będą mogli uczestniczyć w wieczornej liturgii, Msza św. rano o godz. 7:00. Wielki Piątek jest tradycyjnie jedynym dniem w ciągu roku, którym nie odprawia się Mszy św. Uroczysta Adoracja Krzyża rozpocznie się o godz. 15:00. Adoracja Grobu Pańskiego prowadzona przez Sacred Heart Society rozpocznie się o godz. 18:30, a bezpośrednio po adoracji Gorzkie Żale. Adoracja w języku polskim od godz. 19:30. Przypomnienie: Wielki piątek jest dniem ścisłego postu, a zatem wolno jest zjeść jedynie jeden pełny posiłek do syta, a kolejne dwa bardzo skromne jedynie dla zaspokojenia głodu. Obowiązuje też całkowite powstrzymanie się od pokarmów mięsnych. Ofiary zbierane w czasie Adoracji Krzyża są przeznaczone na utrzymanie Grobu Pańskiego lub innych miejsc kultu w Ziemi Świętej. Chrześcijanie w tamtym regionie muszą zmagać się z wieloma wyzwaniami, które wiążą się z wyznawaniem wiary i odpowiedzialnością za święte miejsca, do których przybywają pielgrzymi każdego dnia. RELIGIA CCD Zajęcia katechetyczne w poniedziałek, 14 kwietnia o godz. 17:30. W Wielką Sobotę nie ma Mszy porannej. Poświęcenie pokarmów w szkolnej kafeterii co pół godziny począwszy od 9:00 do 15:00 z godzinną przerwą od 12:00do 13:00. Liturgia Wigilii Paschalnej rozpocznie się o godz. 19:39 od poświęcenia ognia i zapalenia Paschału oraz błogosławieństwa wody. Woda święcona będzie dostępna po Liturgii i w Niedzielę Wielkanocną. Mszę Rezurekcyjną rozpoczynamy w Niedzielę Wielkanocną uroczysta procesją o godz. 6:00. Natomiast na godz. 9:30 zapraszamy wszystkie dzieci wraz z rodzicami na Mszę dedykowaną szczególnie dla najmłodszych. Nasza prośba dyktowana jest troską o potrzebujących, którzy oczekują naszej pomocy. Dzięki zaangażowaniu wiernych z całej diecezji możliwe jest przeprowadzenie wielu programów, które wychodzą naprzeciw najbardziej potrzebującym. Specjalne koperty znajdują się ciągle w ławka. WIELKANOC ZBIÓRKA NASZEJ SZKOŁY Dzięki zaangażowaniu wielu osób a także wdrażaniu najnowszych technologii i proces edukacji naszych dzieci, liczba uczniów w naszej szkole ciągle wzrasta. Wzmożone wysiłki pociągają za sobą niestety również i zwiększone wydatki, dlatego od wielu już lat w Niedzielę Wielkanocną prosimy parafian, przyjaciół i gości o wsparcie dla naszej szkoły, podczas specjalnej kolekty. Liczymy na wasz wielkoduszność i ofiarność, która pomoże jeszcze lepiej służyć modemu pokoleniu, zrastającemu w murach Szkoły św. Józefa. 41 FESTIWAL PARAFIALNY Tegoroczny festiwal odbędzie się w dniach 13, 14 i 15 czerwca. Kupony na loterię pieniężną zostały wysłane do parafian w tym tygodniu. Prosimy o zachęcenie do udziału w loteri również przyjaciół i znajomych. Więcej kuponów można otrzymać na plebanii. Spacial Gift Boot Datki oraz fanty prosimy przynosić na plebanię.
