(773) 491-6929 Jubilee Year of Mercy During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we ourselves have experienced. In today s Gospel, Luke uses a special Greek word conveying just such tenderness. In the other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be ishers, haleis, the same word that means catching ish with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or life, meaning catch or gather people alive, as animal lovers capture without harming, rescue from the wild for a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals committed to the creatures well-being. So in Luke s vision and Pope Francis as well we who have been caught alive by God s mercy ourselves are to become missionaries of mercy during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and gathering them into Jesus community to enjoy fullness of life. Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. USEFUL INFORMATION REGARDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE JUBILEE The Opening of the Doors of Mercy After the solemn inauguration of the Holy Year marked by the opening of the Holy Door of Saint Peter s Basilica next December 8th all the particular Churches opened their own Doors of Mercy in communion with the Church of Rome as part of the Eucharistic celebration of the Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday). As a matter of fact, the Holy Father opened the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Rome, the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, on that Sunday. Every particular Church also opened any other Doors of Mercy, namely those designated at important Shrines, during the celebration of the Eucharist for the Third Sunday of Advent, which was presided at by a delegate of the Bishop. A special rite for the opening of the Holy Doors has been prepared by this Ponti ical Council, with the approval of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. It has been published in the book Celebrating Mercy, the irst of a series of pastoral resources for the Jubilee of Mercy. This volume gives a complete description of everything that is proper for the rite celebrating the opening of a Door of Mercy; for anything not expressly indicated therein, the ordinary liturgical norms apply, as con irmed by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. (Hence, for example, the proper liturgical color was violet or rose, as prescribed for Gaudete Sunday, and the Gloria was not sung, according to the norm for Advent). The series of books, among them the volume containing the rite, is being published in seven languages (Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, and Polish).
