Page Two November 22, 2009 Spiritual Reflection This weekend is the Solemnity of our Lord, Jesus Christ, our King! We can consider the picture of Jesus with a crown on His head, but also the image of the Sacred Heart. Many of us have enthroned the Sacred Heart in our homes as well. When we gaze at the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we might wonder about this image of Jesus with His heart exposed. That image sometimes concerns our children as well. Although Jesus didn t walk this earth with His heart exposed like that, he did walk the earth with His heart burning with love for us. The crown of thorns around His Sacred Heart is a reminder that it wasn t easy for Him. In today s Gospel, Pilate, the one who will order Jesus crucified, asks Jesus if it is true that He is the King of the Jews. During His discourse, Jesus speaks about how we would live if we believed He were our king. Jesus says He came into the world to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth hears Jesus voice. We need to listen to Jesus voice. As we hear in our second reading, I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. We need to live with Jesus as our King! When we consecrate our homes and our lives to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we simply acknowledge that Jesus is our King. Many who have enthroned an image of Jesus Sacred Heart in their homes have come to see the changes in family life when they live with Christ as King of their house. We can t be reminded too often that Christ is our King! Sometimes our faith is a very personal one. A husband prays to God in private, his wife does the same, and their children pray by themselves as well. If we come together to enshrine an image of the Sacred Heart in our homes, those barriers begin to break down. We can come to have a new respect for God and for one another. When we live with Christ as the King of our household, we find it easy to find the source of our strength. We begin to allow Christ to take over our lives. We are called to gather as God s family on Sundays and Holy Days, and to receive the Eucharist. When we hear the charge, Go in peace to love and serve the Lord, we re sent back to our homes to live with Christ as our King all week long. Piłat powiedział: A więc jesteś królem? Oni przeminęli a ON jest zawsze i wszędzie. Nikt nie zdołał Go zwyciężyć i nikt nie potrafi o Nim zapomnieć. On jest Królem nieba i ziemi. -ks. Idzi-

Catholics Come Home: Chicago-Style Evangelization Many parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago have tried to find effective ways to reach out to inactive Catholics. This year, there is an evangelization effort that will support those efforts through a media campaign called Catholics Come Home. The Archdiocese of Chicago and the Dioceses of Joliet and Rockford have joined together in this evangelization effort and have funded the commercials, which will be shown on all major networks within this large viewing area including ABC, NBC, CBS, WGN, FOX, cable stations, Univision, Telemundo, Polsat and Polvision. The centerpiece of this evangelization effort is a commercial titled Epic that has been translated into three languages: English, Polish, and Spanish. This commercial has won multiple awards, including a 2008 Telly Award for Top Honors and 2009 Communicator Awards. The commercial campaign will begin on December 16, 2009, and run for 5 ½ weeks; over that time, the average TV viewer will see a Catholics Come Home commercial 13 to 20 times. The Office for Evangelization has created a webpage devoted to Catholics Come Home. This is the place to see a truly Chicago look of the media campaign and to find facts, photos, and resources specifically for parishes in the Archdiocese. For more information, go to www.catholicscomehomechicago.org.

Page Six November 22, 2009 Catholic Funerals CATHOLIC CREMATION During this month of All Souls, we are more acutely aware of our own mortality. With the growing popularity of cremation it is important that Catholics be informed on exactly what the Church teaches about cremation when making choices for themselves and for their loved ones. The Church allows Catholics to be cremated and, since 1997, those cremated remains are allowed to be present in the church during the funeral Mass. Bringing the body to church in the casket before cremation has been allowed since the 1960 s. Unfortunately, there has been little education given to Catholics on this subject and exactly what moral expectations the Church places in the hands of survivors. Since parish staffs are not generally included to give counsel when funeral arrangements are made, we are left to rely solely on informed Catholics (like you) to make truly Catholic decisions. If the option of cremation is chosen, a funeral Mass at St. Priscilla may be celebrated with the casket present if the cremation will take place later. A funeral Mass may also be celebrated with the urn containing the cremated remains. The gravest source of confusion lies in the final disposition of the cremated remains. The final disposition of the cremated remains is a moral obligation placed on family members or friends. The guidelines approved by the Vatican very clearly state that, "The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium [a cemetery vault designed for urns containing ashes of the dead]. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are NOT the reverent disposition that the Church requires." The instructions also state that, if at all possible, the place of entombment should be marked with a plaque or stone memorializing the deceased. When the family decides on a time and place for the entombment or burial, we ask that our parish office be contacted that we may schedule a priest to be present to preside over the committal service. This is not only a privilege for our priests, but a responsibility. In our current culture, it has not only become popular, but romanticized to spread ashes on a favorite lake or park or storing them in the family home or dividing the ashes among family members. NONE of these is a moral option for Catholics. Despite the fact that the cremated remains are in a different form, they are still human remains and must be treated with dignity. Nobody would ever consider throwing the body of a loved one in a lake, leaving it in a park or keeping it at home. Nobody would ever dismember a body and divide the parts among family members. Doing such things with ashes is paramount to doing the same disrespectful actions to a body which was, in life, a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. We sincerely hope that the information in this article will assist you in making truly Catholic decisions for yourself and your loved ones when such occasions present themselves. It might also be helpful in informing friends or family on exactly what the Church teaches regarding funerals and cremation.
