Page Two April 19, 2009 Spiritual Reflection The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive and forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. Today, we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. It is fitting on the first Sunday after Easter for us to take time to appreciate the gifts that come to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. We have been given the promise of a life that will never end, forgiveness of our sins and the gifts of the Holy Spirit that help us live lives worthy of our calling each day. We know our destiny, we ve been given strength for a true and honest journey and we ve been promised forgiveness whenever we stand in need of forgiveness. How fortunate we are! On Divine Mercy Sunday, we are urged to pray for those in need. We are asked to pray in a special way for all people, especially sinners. May we always know God s willingness to forgive us, and have the humility we need to make peace with those we have harmed and make peace with God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We are also called to pray for the souls of priests and religious, that they may be faithful to their calling and fervent in their work to reach out and bring more people close to God. We are called to pray for both devout and faithful souls and for those who do not believe in Jesus and those who do not yet know Him. We are to pray for our separated brethren and the unity of Christians. We are to pray for the souls of the meek and the humble and the souls of children. Our Divine Mercy prayers are to be offered too, for souls who especially venerate and glorify Jesus mercy and for the souls who are detained in purgatory. Finally, we are able to pray for souls who have become lukewarm. Over the course of nine days preceding this Sunday, we offered these prayers. We can continue our prayers for all these people and pray the Divine Mercy Novena whenever we wish. As we bask in the glory of Easter, we realize that it is our duty now to go to work. Jesus early disciples were sent in the same way. As Jesus says in this weekend s Gospel, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. We can be inspired by the community that gathered around Jesus and work for healing and unity within our own community. As we hear in this weekend s Scriptures, The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to their need. And when others see our generosity, courage and the love we have for others, the words of this weekend s Psalm response will ring true, Give thanks to Lord for He is good; His love is everlasting! Have a good week! Dlatego właśnie ta niedziela nosiła i nosi nazwę niedzieli białej, czyli niedzieli chrzestnej bieli i niewinności. Na początku dzisiejszej Mszy świętej Kościół uroczyście wzywa nas, ochrzczonych, odrodzonych z wody i z Ducha Świętego, wszystkich zmartwychwstałych z grobów grzechu, zła i śmierci, abyśmy przypomnieli sobie nasz własny chrzest. Domaga się od nas, abyśmy byli świadkami Chrystusowego zmartwychwstania czyli wierni Chrystusowi Zmartwychwstałemu i swoim chrzcielnym przyrzeczeniom. Jak niedawno narodzone niemowlęta, pragnijcie duchowego, niesfałszowanego mleka, abyście dzięki niemu wzrastali ku zbawieniu (1 P. 2,2). Pragnijcie Jezusa Chrystusa, Jego Słowa i Jego Krwi, bądźcie spragnieni łaski i świętości Bożej. Jakże i my powinniśmy za nią dziś dziękować Zmartwychwstałemu? On daje nam ją za darmo. Tomaszem te słowa pełne głębokiej wiary: PAN MÓJ I BÓG MÓJ! -ks. Idzi-

History of the Divine Mercy Second Sunday of Easter: Divine Mercy Sunday Page Five The Message of the Divine Mercy that Sr. Faustina received from the Lord was not only directed toward her personal growth in faith but also toward the good of the people. With the command of our Lord to paint an image according to the pattern that Sr. Faustina had seen, came also a request o have this image venerated, first in the Sisters chapel, and then throughout the world. The same is true with the revelations of the Chaplet. The Lord requested that this Chaplet be said not only by Sr. Faustina, but by others: Encourage souls to say the Chaplet that I have given you. The same is true of the revelation of the Feast of Mercy. The Feast of Mercy emerged from my very depths of tenderness. It is my desire that it solemnly be celebrated on the first Sunday of Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the fount of My Mercy. These requests of the Lord given to Sr. Faustina between 1931 and 1938 can be considered the beginning of the Divine Mercy Message and Devotion in the new forms. Through the efforts of Sr. Faustina s spiritual directors, Fr. Michael Sopocko and Fr. Joseph Andrasz, SJ, and others including the Marians of the Immaculate Conception this message began to spread throughout the world. However, it is important to remember that this message of The Divine Mercy, revealed to Sr. Faustina and to our present generation is not new. It is a powerful reminder of who God is and has been from the very beginning. This truth that God is in His very mature Love and Mercy Itself, is given to us by our Judeo-Christian faith and God s self-revelation. The veil that has hidden the mystery of God from eternity was lifted by God Himself. In His goodness and love God chose to reveal Himself to us, His creatures, and to make known His eternal plan of salvation. This He had done partly through the Old Testament Patriarchs, Moses and the Prophets, and fully through His only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. In the person of Jesus Christ, conceived through power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, the unseen God was made visible. Page Six April 19, 2009 How to Recite the Chaplet of Mercy The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades. At the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, the Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer. The Chaplet of Mercy as a Novena In addition to the Novena to The Divine Mercy, which our Lord gave to Saint Maria Faustina for her own personal use, He revealed to her a powerful prayer that He wanted everyone to say the Chaplet of Mercy. Saint Faustina prayed the Chaplet almost constantly, especially for the dying, and the Lord urged her to encourage others to say it too, promising extraordinary graces to those who would recite this special prayer. The Chaplet can be said anytime, but the Lord specifically asked that it be recited as a novena, especially on the nine days before the Feast of Mercy. And He promised, By this Novena (of Chaplets) I will grant every possible grace to souls (796). We can pray this Novena of Chaplets for our own personal intentions, or we can offer it together with the Novena to The Divine Mercy for the daily intentions dictated by Our Lord to Saint Faustina. Our Lord said to Saint Faustina: Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you Whoever will recited it will receive great mercy at the hour of death When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between my Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will (687,1541,1731).
