According to the Stoner - Wohlfahrt theory, magnetism and magnetic order depends on the criterion: JN(E F )>1. Question: how does this criterion depend on the chemical elements and the dimensionality of the system; can it be modified? The exchange integral depends on the d-band of the transition metals and is different for 3d, 4d, and 5d elements. The exchange integral is a question of overlap of the d-wave functions which decreases from 3d to 5d elements. In general: J 3d > J 4d > J 5d
The density of states at the Fermi level depends on the width of the d-band roughly like: with N(E F )~1/W d W 2 d h d N = coordination number, h d hopping matrix element of the d-electrons nearest neighbours. h d depends on the transition metal and scales reciprocal with the localization of the wave function: h 3d < h 4d < h 5d Therefore, for equal coordination: W 3d < W < W 4d 5d N(E F ) 3d > N(E F ) > N(E 4d F ) 5d We can decrease W d by reducing the coordination number. 1. Isolated monolayers: Due to the reduced co-ordination number in the monolayer, the magnetic moment increases. Calculated moments for some examples of monolayers, assuming same atomic distance as in the bulk: structure m ( B ), Vol m ( B ), Surf. Cr bcc 0.5 1.5-3.55 Fe bcc 2.2 2.88 Ni fcc 0.6 0.85
2. Magnetic monolayer on a paramagnetic (diamagnetic) substrate Two effects have to be considered: reduction of band width due to reduced co-ordination, like the case for the monolayer; hybridisation with the bands of the substrate. Hybridisation usually causes band expansion, such that the density of states decreases at the Fermi level. However, hybridisation of magnetic monolayers on noble metal substrates is weak since the d-band of the noble metals lies several ev below the Fermi level. Therefore, magnetic monolayers on Cu, Ag, and Au behave (theoretically) similar to isolated monolayers.

3. Surface of ferro- or antiferromagnets Is the Stoner enhancement bigger at the surface of ferromagnets? Reduced coordination helps again. However, for an enhancement there must be enough holes in the minority-band. Therefore the effect should be weaker for Co and Ni than for Fe and Cr. Very large effect for Cr p(1x1) surface with a moment of 2.5-2.8 B Cr-surface: topological antiferromagnet with enhanced magnetic moment:
