(773) 491-6929 Reflecting on God s Word On most days since early October, the students in the college residence in which I live have been eagerly and insistently bouncing Christmas carols off walls and into hallways. It began with occasional songs on the piano. Soon after, the Christmas CDs were brought out, and a week later one of them came upon an old turntable and some Sinatra Christmas LPs. As they left for Thanksgiving vacation, they each reminded me that the radio would begin playing Christmas music all day long on the day after Thanksgiving. As a result of all this I ve found myself wondering what it is that s driven these twenty-year-olds toward such early visions of Christmas sugarplums. I ve come to believe that beneath all the glitter draped and swagged with ribbons and bows over these days, deeper longings are at play, longings beyond desire for the newest ipod or the latest cell phone, longings for community or healed relationships, longings too for peace among nations and for some sort of equality among people. Curiously, such deepened longings are never marketed by any hype. Yet like Christmas spirit, they just seem to sprout wherever the human spirit inds a niche. I suppose one could make the observation that a twenty-year-old s longing for Christmas is little more than leftover nostalgia for childhood Santas and once-upon-a-time daydreams. Maybe so. Yet Paul once wrote to the Philippian community that such urgings for goodness all begin with God and that ultimately the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6). Second Sunday of Advent Page Three November 23, 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is with much joy and anticipation that I invite all of you to join me to welcome the beginning of the Jubilee of Mercy. The Jubilee of Mercy, proclaimed by Pope Francis begins on December 8, 2015 and concludes with the feast of Christ the King on November 20, 2016. The Jubilee of Mercy is a graced opportunity for all of us to appreciate more deeply how the mercy of God has taken hold of our lives and, at the same time, how we can bring that mercy into the world though our own actions and the way we live our lives. The Jubilee of Mercy will be celebrated in the Archdiocese of Chicago with a full schedule of events and array of resources. Among these are: The commencement of the Jubilee with the opening of the Holy Door on Sunday, December 13 at Holy Name Cathedral. The designation of 32 pilgrimage sites throughout the Archdiocese, where the faithful can receive indulgences. A special weekly resource, One Word at a Time, developed for parishes and individuals to help put merciful actions into practice is now available in English, Spanish and Polish. Stories related to the Jubilee of Mercy will appear regularly in our Archdiocesan newspapers, the Catholic New World and Chicago Católico. A monthly video segment, Mercy Moments, will highlight testimonials from individuals and how they experienced or encountered God s mercy. Fr. Louis Cameli s newest book, Rejoicing in Mercy: A Prayer Commentary on the Gospel of Luke. Adopt a Work of Mercy pamphlet, with a call to all Catholics to commit to one of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy. Jubilee Year of Mercy Second Sunday of Advent This Tuesday, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door in Saint Peter s Basilica, symbolically opening the Jubilee Year of Mercy. In today s scriptures, Baruch con idently anticipates God s healing of the brokenness of humanity, and Paul sees God bringing our discernment, knowledge, and love to ful illment. Our experience of life and of ourselves can make such prophecies seem wildly optimistic, even hopelessly naïve. Pope Francis challenges us to live this Jubilee Year as a graced time, when God s mercy reawakens our enthusiasm to live our baptismal call as gospel people, our hope renewed and ourselves recommitted to sel less charity. Notice that in Luke s Gospel today, God bypasses the religious elite and politically powerful to speak to a humble believer in the barren desert the saving word that will transform history.
