(773) 491-6929 Reflecting on God s Word Going to the school of Jesus was not always easy for the disciples. Beginning with this event, Jesus begins to educate them about what it means to be his disciple. He starts with the basics: Who he is. Like a good teacher, he engages them in a discussion, asking two questions, going from the easier one to the more demanding one: Who do others say I am? Who do you say I am? The irst question gets a quick answer, but the second one gets only Peter s response. By saying You are the Christ (Mark 8:29), Peter was naming Jesus as the long-awaited Anointed One, the one who would come to restore Israel s political kingdom and overthrow the Romans. But this was not to be. Jesus counters Peter by speaking of himself as the Son of Man who must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and then rise after three days. Peter is aghast at this and places himself in front of Jesus so that Jesus has to tell him to get behind him. Peter is blocking his way, like an obstacle, a stumbling block, an adversary (Satan), preventing Jesus from going in the direction he is heading. Peter had learned about a Messiah of power and prestige and Jesus was talking about a Man of pain and punishment. Peter wanted a political Messiah, not a suffering one. Peter saw the disciples taking part in the pomp and pageantry of a new age, and Jesus was speaking of denying oneself and picking up a cross. But graduating from the school of Jesus means moving out of our comfort zone into a distressful district: a place where we take up the cross of self-denial and self-sacri ice. Za wszystkie o iary i trudy podjęte w tej intencji składamy serdeczne Bóg zapłać! Seminary Sunday The second collection next weekend will be for our Archdiocesan Seminary. As in past years, the weekend will be called Seminary Weekend. A seminarian studying for our archdiocese will speak at all Holy Masses next weekend. This year s speaker from Mundelein will be diakon Pawel Barwikowski. We hope that you will make him feel welcome at our parish as we seek to encourage vocations to the priesthood in our Archdiocese. Zachęcamy serdecznie do waszej o iarności na ten cel. SERVANT Sometimes the hour and the person meet. Sometimes, when a task or mission is set upon our shoulders, we know we must meet our responsibilities and we are ready. These are heady and invigorating times. The irst reading and the Gospel proclamation today are intimate glimpses of a commencement, an inauguration of a challenging future. In both readings, a sense of gravity prevails. The irst reading is from the mysterious Servant Songs from the book of Isaiah. The person is steadfast and brave. His courage and bravery are not located in his stout heart, but in God. We are reminded, The Lord God opens my ear that I may hear (Isaiah 50:4), so the servant understands the mission.
