Pastor`s Letter /List Księdza Proboszcza Kochani nasi parafianie i goście, Każdy z nas ma swoje niepowtarzalne zalety, które może wykorzystać dla dobra innych i na chwałę Boga. Bóg nie tworzy bubli, jeśli nas stworzył, to stworzył nas dobrze, uposażył w talenty i powołał do czynienia dobra. Czynić dobro i kochać, to najgłębszy sens naszego powołania. Św. Paweł przypomina nam dzisiaj, że różne są dary łaski, ale jeden Pan i jeden Duch, który działa w nas dla wspólnego dobra. Nie ma najmniejszego sensu porównywanie się z innymi, gdyż każdy został uposażony we właściwy sobie sposób i może, nawet mając niewiele, kochać i czynić dobro. Dlatego świętymi zostawały osoby z wielkich rodów królewskich, dobrze wykształceni i zamożni oraz prości, ubodzy, nieumiejący czytać i pisać wieśniacy. By zostać świętym trzeba umieć tylko jedno kochać i służyć innym, najlepiej jak potrafimy. Bóg, kiedy staniemy kiedyś przed Jego obliczem, nie zapyta nas o to, jakie mieliśmy wykształcenie, ile napisaliśmy mądrych książek, ile zarabialiśmy, ale zapyta tylko o jedno - czy kochaliśmy, czy rozwinęliśmy w sobie dar miłości i służby bliźniemu; czy potrafiliśmy zapomnieć o sobie, zrezygnować z własnych, egoistycznych dążeń, by być bardziej dla innych. W niebie nie ma egoistów. Ktoś kiedyś powiedział, że niebo i piekło są w gruncie rzeczy do siebie podobne: i w niebie i w piekle ludzie siedzą przy stole pełnym wyśmienitych potraw, trzymając w ręku długie łyżki. W piekle jednak, ci, którzy siedzą przy stole są wychudzeni i smutni, zaś w niebie wyśmienicie odżywieni i szczęśliwi. Dzieje się tak dlatego, że w piekle ludzie próbują sami się najeść do syta i nie mogą, bo łyżki są zbyt długie, by je wprowadzić do ust. W niebie zaś wszyscy karmią siebie nawzajem, służąc sobie z miłością. W ten sposób nikt z nich nie cierpi niedostatku. Pan Jezus uczy nas kochać i daje nam przykład miłości aż po krzyż. On wydał siebie dla nas do końca i tylko On może nas takiej miłości nauczyć. Bez Niego nic nie możemy dobrego uczynić, ale z Nim możemy wszystko. Oby ten Nowy Rok był dla nas dobrą szkołą miłości pod czujnym okiem Jezusa, obyśmy byli lepsi dla siebie i czynili ten świat bardziej znośnym. Marek Dear Parishioners and Guests, All of us have unique talents, which can be used for the benefit of others and for the Glory of God. God does not create cheap imitations- if he creates us, he creates us with excellence by giving us talents to do good. To do good and to love is the deepest meaning of our purpose. St. Paul reminds us today that there are many Graces, however there is one God and Spirit, who works in us for the common good. There is no sense at all in comparing ourselves to others, for all of us have been created uniquely and even if we do not have a lot, we can love and do good works. It is no wonder that many saints were wealthy, have come from royal bloodlines, have had prestigious educational backgrounds, and also others were poor, illiterate peasants. All we need to become a saint is to know how to love and to serve others the best we can. When we stand face to face to God one day, He will not ask us what degree we had, how many books we have written, how much money we made; however, he will ask us if we have loved, if we cultivated the gift of love and service to others, if we were able to forget ourselves and sacrifice our own egotistical goals so that we can offer more to others. There are no egoists in heaven. Someone once said that heaven and hell are ultimately similar: both places have people sitting at an enormous feast, holding spoons with very long handles. In hell everyone is sickly and miserable because they find it possible to reach the food and take a spoonful, but because the handle is longer than their arms, they cannot get the spoons back into their mouths. In heaven the people are well nourished, laughing and talking. You see, they have learned to feed each other. When everyone loves each other, nobody is deprived. Jesus teaches us to love one another and proves his love on the cross. He had given himself for us and only He could teach us this kind of love. Without him, we can do no good, but with him we can achieve everything. May this New Year be filled with lessons about love for us under the watchful eye of Jesus so that we may be better to one another creating a world which is more bearable. Second in Ordinary Time The Gospel reading for this is not only the first miracle in John s Gospel it is also John s first mention of Jesus mother. I used to find it odd that he addressed her as Woman. But in that time the word was more respectful; it could even be affectionate. Jesus does help as his mother requested, but he does so in a way that is a lesson about God s love. You have probably heard how the Jewish people in Jesus time performed purification rituals before eating anything. The cleansings were a sign that they wanted to be like God, completely free from sin. Eventually, it came to mean that you could not approach God until you cleansed yourself. Jesus could have made the wine in bottles or wineskins. But he used the six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings (John 2:6). That meant that once they were full of wine, no one could wash themselves from the jars. I wonder how many Pharisees flipped out when they saw that. The point of this is that no one can cleanse themselves. We don t purify ourselves in order to come to God we come to God to be purified. God is the only one who can make us holy. God offers this to sinners especially, because sinners who know they need forgiveness are the only ones to receive it. God never forces mercy on anyone. It is offered to those who ask for it. the amount of wine symbolizes the extent of God s mercy. As there was now more than enough wine for the wedding, God has more than enough mercy for those who need it. Wine is also a symbol of joy in the Old Testament. There is no greater joy than knowing that you have been forgiven by the Lord. Jubilee Year of Mercy January 17, 2016 Second in Ordinary Time Mary, whom Catholic tradition names "Mother of Mercy," at Cana intercedes with her Son to show mercy toward the bridal couple: "Son, they have no wine." But he does more! Jesus' transformation of water into wine is a "sign" (John's term for "miracle") that God's marriage with the whole human race has begun in Jesus' person and ministry, a marriage that will be consummated on the cross: "It is finished"--we are saved! But before Jesus acts, Mary instructs the servers to prepare the way for Jesus' miracle of mercy: "Do whatever he tells you." During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Mother Church, like Mother Mary, instructs us to share the Spirit's manifold gifts--some of which Paul lists in today's second reading--in generous service to the human family. Thus we prepare the way for Jesus' new miracles of mercy, transforming life's sometimes stagnant water into the refreshing wine of God's mercy. The scriptures are filled with stories of God's surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today's Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today's familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody's life--not necessarily our own--will be surprised for the better.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although our tradition carries a long memory of marriage as a sacrament, it may surprise you to learn that for nearly eleven centuries, there was no single wedding ceremony approved for use in the Church. While we have evidence of priests blessing marriages as early as the second century, in the early period church leaders relied on civil authorities to manage marriage for everyone in society. In most cases, society yielded its authority to sanction marriage to the male heads of households. From ancient times, marriage had been a family affair, managed by the father of the family, who acted as priest and guardian of family tradition. Each head wanted to keep the family gods alive, and so he would arrange for brides for his sons, paying a "bride price" as compensation for the loss of a skilled household worker. As creepy as that sounds, it was a step up from the kidnapping practice of earlier years. Even after the kidnapping raids stopped, the customs remained. Every wedding contained the ritualized kidnapping of the bride, the husband abducting his bride from the festivities, carrying her over the threshold to prevent her father's gods from following her into her new religion. There, he fed her a piece of "sacred cake," initiating her into a new way of life. It's fascinating to see how customs endure, long after we have completely rejected the values and attitudes they originally expressed!
