Page Two April 17, 2011 Spiritual Reflection BOTH/AND On the whole, we don t think too highly of donkeys. Nevertheless, these animals have served humans for the last six thousand years, as pack animals or for people transport, and for all kinds of heavy agricultural work. Donkeys work very hard but they have a reputation for being stubborn and unintelligent. In ancient Israel a person riding on a donkey indicated wealth and status in much the same way luxury cars might do today. Ordinary people went everywhere on foot. Horses at that time were used solely for war, and only powerful kings such as Solomon could afford them. Jesus is described as riding on a young donkey into Jerusalem, which would have been appropriate for him as a descendant of the royal House of David. The crowd, if only temporarily, acknowledged Jesus as king, probably hoping he would start a violent revolt and overthrow their Roman conquerors. In later times, this same account of the Messiah riding on a donkey came to have the opposite emphasis, indicating Jesus simple, sober way of life, avoidance of luxury and status, and his perfect humility. The truth is that Jesus is both. He is the one who took the form of a slave... humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, and also the one whom God greatly exalted in kingly glory (Philippians 2:7, 8, 9). As we walk through this week, following Jesus to Calvary and beyond, we know that his suffering mirrors our own, but we also know that we are the sons and daughters of the heavenly king who has ransomed us from death and sin. Take time this week to walk with Jesus in prayer until you stand in your heart at the foot of the cross, where you can say like the centurion, Truly, this was the Son of God! (Matthew 27:54). Copyright 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. DROGA PALMOWA CHRYSTUSA. Chrystus tłumaczy nam dzisiaj sprawy trudne do zrozumienia. J. 12, 27). Opowiadanie o mę ce, ś mierci i zmartwychwstaniu stanowią najstarszą część Ewangelii i zasadniczą treść pierwotnej katechezy apostolskiej. Tchnie ono realizmem, prostotą i powagą. Dzisiejsza liturgia ukazuje tragizm zderzenia dwóch postaw tych samych ludzi. Tłum oddaje Jezusowi hołd, wita Go z entuzjazmem, uznaje Go swoim królem, a parę dni później ten sam tłum skazuje Go na śmierć. Triumfalna droga, usłana palmami i gałązkami z drzew, zmieniła się w bolesną, krzyżową drogę. Ramiona, obejmujące kilka dni temu naręcza gałęzi palmowych, wzniosły się do góry z zaciśniętymi pięściami, a triumfalne okrzyki hosanna zastąpiło złowieszcze ukrzyżuj. Chciejmy wzmocnić ducha i dochować wierności Jezusowi Chrystusowi w Jego Kościele. - ks. Idzi -

Page Six April 17, 2011 Don t let the familiar words of the Palm Sunday readings slip by... Listen carefully and find a character in the story that you identify with in order to make the readings come alive. Within all of the Gospel s drama, you may find that Peter is the character whose words and actions seem closest to your own. At first, the joyful exuberance of Jesus ride into Jerusalem leads into the quiet moment at table with Jesus at the Last Supper. Peter experiences the cheers of the crowd and is strengthened by Jesus presence. In those moments, we too might echo Peter s statement, though all may have their faith in you shaken, mine will never be. Have you ever felt as if you were riding in glory with Jesus after a retreat or powerful prayer experience just like the Palm Sunday ride into Jerusalem? Those moments of life should be savored and remembered because they strengthen us for the challenges ahead. Peter s next move in this drama seems shameful, and yet he reacts in a way that feels completely human. Peter is approached by people who question his relationship with Jesus and three times Peter says, I do not know the man. Does Peter s reply sound familiar to you? Life is full of ups and downs and inevitably there comes a time of conflict when our faith is shaken. Has someone you know questioned you after reading a story of abuse in the Church? Do you know people who say that the Church is out-of-touch with modern society? Do these confrontations shake your faith? What does it take to stand your ground and proclaim your faith in the midst of controversy? In moments of doubt, say a silent prayer to the Holy Spirit for strength and your reply will always proclaim the truth and be grounded in love.
