Please plan to be here. PARISH CHOIR We invite all interested persons to create a new parish choir. We believe there are many individuals among us blessed by God with a good voice, which should be used to give glory to God through liturgical song. We strongly encourage those individuals. HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM If there are any individuals or families, who donated for the installation of the heating and cooling system, and whose names were not included on the donor wall, please contact the parish rectory. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three pillars of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ******************************************************************************************************************************** LENTEN ALMS FOR THE POOR Collecting funds for the poor is an important work of mercy for the Church. In the first letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, Paul requests that a collection should be taken every week in support of the Poor in Jerusalem. Paul felt that this was a necessary act of Charity. From that time until this, it has been the tradition of Catholic Churches to display a poor box to collect the donations of the faith community for the poor. A poor box has been placed on the step next to the communion rail in the sanctuary. Please be generous in remembering the poor of our community especially during Lent. As in previous years, we will be collecting nonperishable food items, which may be placed on the altar before the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue. Page 6 March 10, 2019 My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, On behalf of the people who are served throughout our Diocese in Brooklyn and Queens, we begin the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal by thanking those who generously responded to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. If it were not for the commitment of parishioners throughout the Diocese to the Annual Catholic Appeal each year, the responsibility to provide the basic services and ministries of the Diocese of Brooklyn would be impossible. I want to assure you that we stand committed to full transparency and respect for your wishes regarding the ministries you intend your donation to support. Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal cannot be used for the settlement of sexual abuse victim claims or for anything other than the intended purposes outlined in Appeal materials. An independent audit by Grassi & Company will be available at the end of the calendar year. Those Who Are Hungry Who does your offering to the Annual Catholic Appeal support? Those who are hungry, without shelter, without access to Catholic education, men discerning the priesthood or diaconate and those who are ill and dying are just a few of the groups who depend upon your generosity to the Annual Catholic Appeal. By supporting the works of the Diocese and the mission of the Church through a commitment to the Annual Catholic Appeal, you will inspire others in your parish and our diocese to join us as a response in faith to serve our neighbors by funding the good works of the Diocese of Brooklyn. The ministries made possible through a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal go beyond the abilities of any one parish while benefiting all parishioners who make up our diocesan family. In the area of Catholic education, your support makes it possible for the Diocese to identify children who are not currently enrolled in our religious education programs or Catholic schools and academies. Catholic education is critical to the life of our diocese because it ensures the future of our Church in Brooklyn and Queens. Currently, there are 35,599 students attending our Catholic grammar schools, academies and high schools and 42,222 students enrolled in parish religious education programs for those not attending Catholic schools. A sad fact is that there are another 80,000 students, baptized and living in the Diocese of Brooklyn, who have never been given any religious education. Through your generosity and the collaboration of our parishes and Catholic schools and academies, we can identify these students and provide all our children with religious education. The Stranger Among Us The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal also makes it possible for the Church to welcome the stranger among us through its support of Catholic Migration Services. Thanks to your commitment to the Appeal, Catholic Migration Services along with Catholic Charities reaches out to those in need of legal assistance, housing, food, socialization, and childcare to name a few vital programs. Our Priests and Deacons The life of every parish within the Diocese of Brooklyn depends heavily on the dedicated work of our priests and deacons. Your support of the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is crucial in fostering Vocations by sustaining programs which allow men to hear and respond to God s call to the priesthood and the permanent diaconate. Upon my arrival to the Diocese of Brooklyn in 2003, we had 27 seminarians preparing to enter the priesthood. Thanks to the investment in vocation programs made possible by your gifts to the Annual Catholic Appeal, since 2004, 98 men were ordained to the priesthood for Brooklyn and Queens. An additional 46 men are currently in formation and hope to become priests. The Office of Faith Formation The Annual Catholic Appeal also aids the Office of Faith Formation. This office is responsible for how we prepare young people and adults to receive the sacraments. The School of Evangelization, within the Office of Faith Formation, provides the instruction and opportunity for the Diocese of Brooklyn to provide our lay leaders with the necessary tools to call others to Christ through the Church. The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal allows us to support our Catholic Chaplaincies in non-catholic colleges and universities, hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions throughout Brooklyn and Queens. The chaplain s work is significant in ensuring that none of the faithful of Brooklyn and Queens are denied access to the sacraments. Retired Priests Our Retired Priests, who are not able to live independently, are helped by the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal as well. At the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, 49 rooms are dedicated to our senior priests in the Bishop Mugavero Residence. This home provides a dignified community experience for priests needing assisted living. Lastly, not all of our Parishes are able to meet the financial burden their work demands. In recent years, we have made tremendous progress with Christ Jesus Our Hope, where we looked at all the parishes of the Diocese to see which needed to be combined in order to be sustainable and vibrant. The parish support which your gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal provides goes further to help those parishes with large pastoral demands in communities of low means or extraordinary circumstances. Your commitment to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal, no matter how big or small, ensures the success of the mission of the Church in Brooklyn and Queens. Together, we are able to can cast out our nets and put out into the deep to become fishers of men and women. We are grateful for your partnership in the Lord s work and invite you to join with your neighbors to live your faith and make so many good works possible through your commitment to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. Bp Nicholas DiMarzio
March 10, 2019 Page 7 Lenten Regulations Once again, the celebration of Christ s Passion and Resurrection draws near. In our preparation for Easter, the Church invites us to observe the penitential and grace -filled season of Lent, which commences on March 6 with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Lent is a time of renewal for the entire Catholic community. It is also a time of spiritual accompaniment as we assist the catechumens and candidates who will be welcomed into communion with the Church during the Easter Season. In order to assist the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn to take full advantage of the Lenten season, our Bishop, Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio wishes to draw attention to the following: Abstinence All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Fasting All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. Easter Duty After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. By special indult, in the United States, the period for fulfilling this precept has been extended to include the period beginning the First Sunday of Lent (March 10) to the celebration of Pentecost (June 9). The Solemnity of Saint Joseph: The solemnity of Saint Joseph should be observed with proper solemnity even though it falls within the season of Lent. Reconciliation Monday: Our diocese will once again celebrate Reconciliation Monday on April 15, the Monday of Holy Week. As in recent years, this initiative provides generous opportunity for the faithful to experience God s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. After having reached the age of discretion, members of the faithful are bound to confess once a year grave sins which have not already been absolved. Easter Vigil: Sunset on Holy Saturday, April 20, will be at 7:40 p.m. in Brooklyn. The Easter Vigil may begin at 8 p.m. (or later) and must end before dawn on Easter Sunday. The obligation to observe, as a whole or substantially, the penitential days specified by the Church, is a serious one. Days of penance are not merely individual exercises they are observed by the whole Church, as the Body of Christ. The faithful are encouraged to celebrate the sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance frequently during the Lenten season. Additionally, reading the Word of God, praying the Stations of the Cross, prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and showing generosity toward the poor are all means of intensifying our spiritual lives during the Lenten season. Pastors and parents are responsible to see that young persons, who are not bound to the above requirements, are educated in an authentic sense of penance. All other Fridays of the year remain as days of penance in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Bishops of the United States have recommended abstinence from meat as a penance for all Fridays of the year, although each person may substitute that tradition for some other practice of voluntary self-denial or personal penance. This may involve acts of self-denial, prayer or charity.
