OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE JESUS, REMEMBER ME The man who hung on the cross next to Jesus asks him to "remember me when you come into your kingdom." Of all the people who took part in the crucifixion of Jesus, only this man sincerely acknowledges Jesus as King. Only he receives the promise of joining Jesus in paradise that very day. I wonder if he knew what Jesus' kingdom meant? The second reading gives us a better idea of the extent of that kingdom. Paul uses images of things visible and invisible, of dominions, principalities, and powers. Notice one short phrase that appears six times in that reading: "all things." If Christ is King of all things, that includes our possessions. We might keep that in mind, not only when deciding how much we give to the poor or to the Church, but also how we use the things we own. The things we watch on TV, the foods we eat, the books we read--all are under Jesus' kingship. I might even drive more carefully if I remember that my car belongs to the Lord. Even our life is under his reign. That can remind us to trust Jesus more, as well as to ask for the guidance of his Spirit in our decisions. If we let the Lord guide our lives, we know that anything that happens to us is either God's will or something that Jesus can lead us through, on our way to paradise.

KINGSHIP The book of Samuel recounts for us today the anointing of David as king of Israel. It was the elders of Israel who declared David king that day, but it was God who called David to shepherd Israel. Thus mandated by the citizens of his kingdom and by his God, David took his place in a long line of kings. The apostle Paul speaks to us of kingship as well, but on a much higher plane: the kingship of Jesus our Lord. As great as David was, he and all earthly monarchs who came before and after him in their kingdoms around the world are minor kings by comparison to the true King. And lastly, we hear the story of that true King in perhaps his weakest moment: near death, hanging on a cross, taunted by a common criminal and by the world at large.

Tradycja uroczystości nakazuje spożycie wspólnej świątecznej kolacji, poprzedzonej dziękczynną modlitwą. Symbolem Święta Dziękczynienia jest pieczony, nadziewany indyk, podawany z sosem żurawinowym i z pieczonymi ziemniakami. Tradycyjnym daniem jest również ciasto z dyni. 7 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Among the Catholics seeking religious freedom in America were the Carrolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 from Ireland via England. Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in 1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence, and was the longest-surviving signer. As was the custom for English Catholics, he attended English schools in Belgium and later university in France. By the time he signed the Declaration, he was the richest man in America, and his decision to sign would hardly go unnoticed by the king. Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything. It is said that someone grumbled that there were many men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he could dodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, "of Carrollton," making it clear that he put everything at risk. His cousin John, also an ardent supporter of the American Revolution, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Maryland at the outbreak of hostilities. Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ultimately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new nation. No one was better positioned for this task, a cultured man from an esteemed family, a cherished friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and a man so thoroughly attuned to an undercurrent of anti-catholicism in the colonies that he could charm powerful people to a new point of view. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Jubilee Year Ends Today Luke, evangelist and by tradition artist, sends us forth from this Jubilee Year of Mercy with an unforgettable portrait of Christ the King. The setting for Jesus' "royal portrait" is the cross. From this "throne," the crucified "crown prince" welcomes by "executive pardon" the kingdom of mercy's first citizen, a fellow criminal. The "Good Thief" requests neither deliverance nor salvation, or even forgiveness: "Remember me when..." (Luke 23:42). "Today you will be with me," King Jesus promises, "in paradise." (23:43). Paradise, even for non-believers, is an image of creation contentedly in harmony with self, fellow creatures, and Creator. Today, we "good thieves" beg Jesus to remember us. We promise to remember that, although Jesus' kingdom will be fulfilled only when Jesus' returns, that kingdom begins today in the paradise that will flower from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. We disciples, having been embraced unconditionally and undeservedly by Jesus' mercy, must now go forth to embrace all others, unconditionally, with that same unfailing mercy. FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF MARY On this Feast of the Presentation of Mary in the Temple by Joachim and Anne, we are invited to make the choice to surrender our lives to the Lord. Parents are reminded of their solemn responsibility to present their children for Baptism. We are all challenged to bring this Feast to life in our age and thereby continue to participate in God's unfolding plan for the whole human race. The Feast of the Presentation of Mary is celebrated in both the Eastern and Western Churches. It recalls the day in the life of the Jewish girl named Mary (Maryam) when her parents, Joachim and Anne, presented her to the Lord in the temple and dedicated her life to Him. Mary had already been chosen by God, preserved by a singular grace as a chosen vessel through whom the Incarnate Word would be given for the salvation of the whole world. However, the offering by her parents is a response to the invitation to join our free choice to God' invitation. This exercise of freedom lies at the heart of discipleship, and is the inner core of every vocation, to cooperate with grace. In the Office of Readings, we are given a sermon by St. Augustine given of this Feast and entitled "She who believed by faith, conceived by faith" for reflection.
