Stewardship Note: Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the Lord looks into the heart. How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God? We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, He will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him, how much we loved others and how we showed that love by the way we used our time, talents and treasure here on earth. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT March 26, 2017 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. - Psalm 23:1 CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT The future king, David, in today s first reading, is an example of a type of character present throughout the Hebrew scriptures. He is the child born out of place (not the eldest or most favored) who ends up receiving the promise of the covenant. The spirit of God s anointing rushes upon him. In this way, he is similar to the man born blind from today s Gospel. David s family and the blind man s community did not expect the miraculous grace of God s love to work through them. Perhaps they, too, were blinded by the expectations and assumptions of those around them. Yet, after being touched by God, they both came to see the presence of God s will for them. Both became messengers of God s will. That same Spirit of God s anointing rushed upon us at our baptism; we were given a candle as a sign of our membership in the Body of Christ, the Light from Light. Our vocation, then, is to fulfill that enlightenment, that anointing, as Ephesians tells us, by living as children of the light. 3 Page 3 EASTER PREPARATION The Season of Lent is associated with spring, and nature is awakening from the winter freeze as an indication that new life is upon us. Easter is a sign of new life through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. People are created in the image of God, but that image sometimes get clouded, even disfigured through our human weaknesses. Preparation for Easter requires a personal renewal through prayer, almsgiving, retreats and all devotional practices. For the next several days our Basilica offers a unique opportunity to review our life of faith. Sisters of Divine Mercy from the St. John Paul II Shrine in Washington, DC will be here for a couple of days, followed by Deacon Paul Connelly on Tues. and Msgr. James Moroney on Wed., to provide us with a new outlook on our life of grace in our hearts. Please come each day for this sacred time and become rejuvenated and energized to participate in the mission of the Church. Encourage your children, grandchildren and friends to be part of this spiritual enrichment in our parish. Sister Donata and Sister Gaudia will speak at all weekend Masses. Thank you to those who made a gift and a special thank you for those who gave for the first time. Your gift will help us in reaching our parish goal. To date 78 of our parish families have responded for a total of $10,311. However, we need the support of all members of our Basilica Community if we are to be successful in reaching our parish goal of $31,300. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS Usually in the springtime parents are searching for a quality education to enroll their children for the next academic year. Although every school, in general terms, wants to convey knowledge, however several leading schools in the region stand out as leaders. St, Joseph School accepts children from Pre-K to Grade 8. Research demonstrates that a high quality Pre-K education increases a child s chances of succeeding in school and in life. Students who enter the school behind their peers often stay behind. For that reason we place a great importance on education of the Pre-K students as well as in the upper grades. St. Joseph School not only prepares children for intellectual achievements but also for a happy and fulfilled life because it addresses all dimensions of human existence. Public education provides a fragmentary approach to the students which means that certain areas of life are not explored. Please register your child at St. Joseph School as soon as possible to assure your child a place in the fall. The 2017 St. Joseph School Geography Bee-final round qualifiers were: Roksana Chrusliska and Gracie Scott Grade 5; Caroline Doering and Joshua Njoroge Grade 6; Benjamin Duval and Szymon Mamro Grade 7; and Christopher Mahlert, David Mankarios, Abigail Mulry, and Mackenzie Valliere Grade 8. All Geography Bee finalists received a certificate of participation. In the Championship Round, 1 st place went to Mackenzie Valliere - Grade 8; 2 nd Place to Benjamin Duval - Grade 7; and 3 rd Place to Szymon Mamro Grade 7. Mackenzie received a gold medal and 1 st Place Certificate from the National Geographic Society for her achievement. The National Geography Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. PILGRIMS FROM ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD Last Sunday, we welcomed many Pilgrims from the Connecticut area on their annual pilgrimage to our Basilica. They arrived in the morning and spent the day in devotional prayer, adoration, Gorzkie Zale and were served lunch in our school cafeteria. We are grateful to our parishioners under the leadership of Marzena Kolinski: Bożena Jaroszewski, Hanna Denert, Ewa Mamro, Karolina Kicilińska, Lidia Nolle, Jolanta Podskarbi, Ewa Piekielniak, Agnieszka Potem, Joanna and Małgorzata Sudyka, Marta Pająk, Wiesław Pieniążek and Maria Czapnik who worked tirelessly to prepare and serve our guests. Consider wearing blue to emphasize the critical importance of preventing child abuse and neglect and keeping children safe in our Diocese. OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Students and parents will participate in our Retreat on Mon., Mar. 27th at 5:30pm in our Basilica. (Ps 23, 1) Bóg patrzy inaczej niż człowiek. Nie zatrzymuje się na tym, co widoczne dla oczu, ale widzi ludzkie wnętrze, ludzkie serce. Bóg widzi w ciemności, bo sam jest światłem. W końcu Bóg przywraca wzrok temu, który nie widział od urodzenia, stwarza go na nowo dla światła. Okazuje się jednak, że można mając oczy, niczego nie dostrzegać. I ten rodzaj ślepoty piętnuje Druga kolekta w przyszłym tygodniu będzie przeznaczona na Zobowiązania Diecezjalne. PRZYGOTOWANIE DO WIELKANOCY Okres Wielkiego Postu jest związany z nadchodzącą wiosną, i naturą budzącą się do życia po zimowym śnie. Wielkanoc jest świętem życia poprzez zmartwychwstanie Pana Jezusa. My wszyscy jesteśmy stworzeni na obraz Boży. Obraz ten jednak jest niejednokrotnie niewyraźny, a nawet wypaczony poprzez nasze ludzkie słabości i niedoskonałości. Przygotowanie do Wielkanocy wymaga osobistej odnowy poprzez modlitwę, jałmużnę i praktyki religijne. W naszej parafii przeżyliśmy już rekolekcje w języku polskim, a od dzisiejszej niedzieli do środy będziemy przeżywali rekolekcje po angielsku prowadzone przez Siostry Miłosierdzia Bożego z Sanktuarium Jana Pawła II w Waszyngtonie. Towarzyszyć im będą Diakon Paul Connelly oraz ks. Prałat James Moroney. Zapraszamy do uczestnictwa w tych modlitewnych spotkaniach. PARTNERS IN CHARITY W poprzednią niedzielę rozpoczęliśmy tegoroczną zbiórkę na Partners in Charity. Serdecznie dziękujemy wszystkim parafianom, którzy już złożyli swoje ofiary. Szczególne podziękowania kierujemy do osób, które postanowiły przyłączyć się do tej zbiórki po raz pierwszy. W sumie swoje ofiary złożyło 78 osób. Kwota zebrana do tej pory to $ Bóg zapłać wszystkim! Przypominamy, że ofiary i zobowiązania można składać do koszyka z kolektą lub w biurze parafialnym. Mając na uwadze wszelkie dobro, które otrzymujemy każdego dnia, okażmy naszą wdzięczność Bogu poprzez wsparcie tych, którzy cierpią niedostatek i zmagają się z poważnymi trudnościami na co dzień. Nie zapomnijmy, że cokolwiek uczynimy jednemu z tych najmniejszych, uczynimy na chwałę samego Boga.
