STEWARDSHIP The Gospel message invites us, as Christians, to follow a different path - a road less traveled. As a people of faith and members of a parish faith community, we are called to live differently. As Christians, the road less traveled is a continuing spiritual journey that includes living as Christian Stewards. Stewardship is sometimes misunderstood. It should not be interpreted as a way for the parish to raise money. It isn t a program, an appeal or a financial quick fix. Stewardship is deeply personal and spiritual, a way of practicing the faith. As a people of faith, we are called to share, serve others and be part of a worshipping community called a parish. SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES January 22 through January 28 MAIN ALTAR Candle I God s blessings for a safe voyage for Jillian Given by her loving family THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 22, 2017 Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted and wait for the LORD. - Psalm 27:14 LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus future ministry in that province. The light that brings salvation and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance ( darkness ) and sin (the yoke ). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This always brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of Christ s party. The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecies. The theme is Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 4:17). To spread this message, Jesus begins to select disciples, four of whom we meet today: Peter, Andrew, James, and John. Next weekend s second collection is designated for the Catholic Home Mission Appeal. THE CATHOLIC HOME MISSION APPEAL In conjunction with the USCCB, Catholic Home Missions supports home missions in dioceses, that are unable to offer their people the basic pastoral ministries of word, worship and service. It focuses on evangelization activities, religious education, ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and brothers and lay people and supports poor parishes across the country. With your support on January 28-29th we will be able to strengthen the Church at Home.

NATIONAL MIGRATION WEEK CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK The Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week for nearly fifty years. National Migration Week is an opportunity for Catholics to reflect on their heritage as well as the heritage of those they encounter in their community. The importance of the word encounter was stressed during Pope Francis homily given at his first Pentecost as pope: For me this word is very important. Encounter with others. Why? Because faith is an encounter with Jesus, and we must do what Jesus does: encounter others. The celebration of National Migration Week is an annual tradition at St. Joseph School in Webster, MA. This year s observance has a special meaning since we are marking the 125th Anniversary of St. Joseph School. The children of the school represent various cultures and each year they recognize the diversity of our country and with their families will come together to celebrate their heritage on Sunday, January 29, 2017 during 9:30am mass. Bishop Robert J. McManus will be main celebrant and homilist. The public is invited to join us for this special celebration. Following mass, there will be a special Open House from 11am 1pm to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. All are invited to visit each classroom and learn about the individual ethnic groups that have enriched St. Joseph School and the community of Webster. Travel through France, Poland, Greece, Italy and more! Passports will be provided to participants who experience the Tour of Countries. Everyone who completes the tour will receive a special gift. In addition, a sampling of international foods will be provided in the cafeteria along with special entertainment. Encounter the College of the Holy Cross Afro-Caribbean drumming group Los Congres, an Asian Dance Troupe from the Southeast Asian Coalition, the Piast Polish Dance Ensemble, and others! We look forward to seeing you at our 125 th Anniversary Open House! PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the apparition of the Blessed Mother in Fatima, Portugal, we will sponsor a pilgrimage to this holy site for nine days in the first part of August. On the pilgrimage trail we will include the miraculous Shrine in Fatima, visit the village of Aljuster where Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia lived and Valinhos, the site of the fifth apparition. We will travel by bus to Seville for a picturesque tour and visit historical places, magnificent alabast gardens, fountains, cathedrals. Also tour Madrid and Barcelona, The Basilica of the Lady of the Pillar where the Blessed Mother appeared to St. James, who brought Christianity to the country, as well as Mont Serrat, home of the Benedectine Monastery and enjoy a relaxing day at the seaside. This tour coincides with the 125th Anniversary of our school where devotion to Our Lady of Fatima is practiced and cherished by the school children as well as the parishioners. I believe that many people in our parish experience a variety of needs and seek the protection of our patron in their journey of life. All intentions are prayed for daily by a network of dedicated parishioners and are also included in the Chaplet of Divine Mercy prayed at 3:00pm on the First Friday of the month during Perpetual Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament at our Basilica. 5 Page 5 NARODOWY TYDZIEŃ MIGRACJI TYDZIEŃ SZKÓŁ KATOLICKICH Kościół Katolicki w Stanach Zjednoczonych od prawie pięćdziesięciu lat organizuje Tydzień Migracji. Ten tydzień to szansa dla Katolików do refleksji nad ich dziedzictwem religijnym i kulturowym, oraz dziedzictwem tych, których spotkają w swoim życiu, zgodnie z tym co powiedział Papież Franciszek: Wiara jest spotkaniem z Jezusem, a my powinniśmy czynić to co On czyni spotykać się z innymi. Obchody Tygodnia Migracji stały się już tradycją w Szkole Świętego Józefa. Nasi uczniowie reprezentują wiele kultur i poprzez tę różnorodność ubogacaj naszą wspólnotę szkolną.
