Saint Joseph Basilica 3 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 3, 2017 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come. Mark 13:33 The Hope of Advent We begin the Season of Advent with a simple message from the gospel of Mark Stay awake for the Lord! Jesus urges an attitude of attentiveness and hope that God will come to set right a world gone awry. Watch, therefore, you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 33:34-37) The four watches of night named by Jesus symbolize moving deeper into despair, until an allconsuming fear induces a sleep, a loss of one s sense of purpose. Not only do we not know when the Messiah will return to judge the living and the dead we also do not know where to expect it. The Advent scriptures focus our attention on these stark realities and remind us that we are called to wait and watch, not passively, but with a hope that comes from faith rooted in a God of love and in the goodness of humanity. Instrumental Selections - Before Mass: J. S. Bach God through your Goodness BWV 600 After Mass: Choral prelude Lord Christ, the only Son of God BWV 601 Eucharistic Ministers - Dec. 2/3 4:00pm - Cathleen Holmberg and Joseph Werbecki 7:00am - Open 8:15am - Jean Duclos and Theresa Wagner 9:30am - Sheila Kusek and Tessa Mailloux 11:00am - John Hester Lectors - Dec. 2/3 4:00pm - Marlene Plaza 7:00am - Diane Gajewski and Ryszard Skowron 8:15am - Theresa Levasseur 9:30am - Linda Cieszynski 11:00am - Tomasz Smieszek DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Please join us at 3pm this Sunday, December 3rd, for the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet followed by Benediction. Stewardship Note: We all take things for granted. In particular, we take time for granted. Our lives are so busy, many of us are planning our time - our days, weeks, months, even years in advance. Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here! Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. Take time in silence, every day, and listen to what God is saying to you. Advent Reflections On Sunday, December 3rd, we begin a new Advent Season and a new liturgical year. Advent derives its meaning from the Latin word adventus - it means coming. In Greek translation it means parousia which is preparation for a Second Coming of Jesus at the end of the world. Therefore, Advent is a preparation for celebrating the first anniversary of Jesus birth in Bethlehem as well as preparation for his final coming as a Messiah of the world. The patroness of Advent is the Blessed Mother who introduced Jesus Christ to humanity. We live out our faith when we are open to God s coming, when we persevere in his Advent. Therefore, Advent is the beginning of a new life. This is beautifully demonstrated in the sacrament of baptism when we celebrate the beginning of a new life in Christ. Jesus is not coming with empty hands. He brings us the divine life; he wishes us to have life and to live it to its fullest. (John 10,10). The second patron of Advent is John the Baptizer who calls us for straightening our paths of life which means receiving the good news of salvation. The best way to fully participate in the Advent Season is to spend more time on prayer, attend divine worship faithfully on Sundays and weekdays, and perform acts of charity. St. Vincent de Paul message: As we begin Advent, we are called to Be watchful, be alert as we stand in joyful anticipation for the grace of Christmas to once again bless our lives. Your gift to St. Vincent de Paul will help the poor to celebrate the grace of God s love this Christmas.

KRONIKA PARAFIALNA PIERWSZANIEDZIELA ADWENTU 3 grudnia, 2017 Uważajcie, czuwajcie, bo nie wiecie, kiedy czas ten nadejdzie. (Mk 13, 33) NEW ALTAR SERVERS We welcome our new Altar Servers who were recently introduced at last Sunday s 9:30 Mass: Andrew Bergeron, Dale Boudreau, Leah Boudreau, Seth Boudreau, Gabriel Faria, Matthew Obrycki, Evan Pamfred, Grace Pamfred, Antonia Peters, Riley Paters, Gabriela Pianka, Rocco Rudnicki, Natalie Smith, Hannah Whatson. Congratulations!
