3 Saint Joseph Basilica December 16, rd SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 16, 2018 Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Philippians 4:6 A certain priest, known for his girth, returned to his former parish to visit, minus much of his sizable frame. When asked about his weight loss, he told everyone that chest pains and the fear of a heart attack motivated him to lose weight and take better care of himself. He felt better, had more energy and was more active than he had ever been. Once he made up his mind, he did what was necessary to stay fit. John s listeners are convinced by the Baptist s message that announced the coming of the Messiah. They want to do something to prepare for the coming of the Lord. It was not possible or practical to become like John. So, John tells them to do what they can. In their jobs, communities and daily lives, they were to live in anticipation of the coming of the Messiah, practicing the virtues of the Kingdom by treating people fairly and with respect. To prepare once again for the celebration of Christmas, we must root out sin and evil in our lives and renew our commitment to God and holiness. Look for those opportunities everyday and live your life according to your beliefs. Make up your mind that you will do whatever it takes to get right with God and prepare for the coming of Christ. A good first step is begin with the sacrament of Confession. JOSEPH Advent Season brings to our attention Blessed Mother and St. Joseph who are the central figures of the month of December. We encourage parishioners to take advantage on each Wed., to pray to God through the intercession of St Joseph for our own intentions. Please join us on Dec. 19th at 7:00pm. in our weekly Novena and Devotion to our Patron. You may want to state your intentions on the petition slips available in the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chaplet to be read during the devotion. 4 4 December 16, 2018 Saint Joseph Basilica The second collection this weekend is for Retirement Fund for Religious. There is no second collection next weekend. RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS This weekend, our second collection will be for the Retirement Fund for Religious, a national collection that benefits more than 32,000 elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Many of these religious worked for years for small sitpends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. With the rising costs of care and the increase in those needing care, many religious communities struggle to provide for their senior members. In thanksgiving for all that elder religious have done for us, please give to those who have given a lifetime. SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT On Sunday, December 16, at 2:00 pm in our new St. Joseph School Performing Arts Center, the Drama Club will hold their annual Christmas show, SIMPLEST NATIVITY. This annual event is always an uplifting and absolutely wonderful musical that we encourage all parishioners to attend and intensify your Christmas spirit. Our students have been rehearsing for weeks and always look forward to see all of you in the audience of our new facility. Tickets are Adults - $8, Children - $5, St. Joseph School students - free. Saint Vincent de Paul - In today s Gospel John the Baptist says, Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise Christmas is a time of love and gift giving...please share your abundance by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who do not have clothes and food can share in the blessings of Christmas. DONATIONS OF SNOW EQUIPMENT NEEDED With the coming of winter, the removal of snow in a timely fashion around the church and school is our highest priority. With the new gym building, we now have an additional area to clear of snow. We are looking for donations of equipment that is in good shape that will help us to prepare the grounds for church services as well as school and gym activities. If you are able to contribute or for further information please call the rectory. We hope that you will make an Angel a part of your Christmas tradition. Children as well as the elderly look forward to your gifts to brighten their season. This novena is a tradition of 9 days of praying to the Infant Jesus for a particular intention and is very beneficial in our spiritual development. The visual image in the sanctuary depicts 9 steps symbolizing the 9 days before Christmas Day. This helps us to concentrate our preparation and a life of prayer for the upcoming birth of the Christ Child. OPLATEK YOU RE INVITED On Sunday, January 13, 2019, the Holy Rosary Sodality is sponsoring the Annual Oplatek Dinner at Point Breeze Restaurant in Webster. All parishioners and friends are cordially invited! Appetizers begin at 12noon followed by a delicious family-style dinner of ham and turkey complete with salad, vegetables, and homemade desserts. CARDS AVAILABLE As we celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Saint Joseph's designation as a basilica, unique postcards and Christmas cards featuring photos of its art and architecture are available. A set of twelve assorted 5 x 7 postcards is available for $12. A pack of seven identical high quality Christmas cards with envelopes is available for $12 also. The Christmas cards are bilingual, featuring greetings in both English and Polish. Both sets come handsomely packaged in a translucent, resealable envelope. Any proceeds realized from the sale of these special cards will be applied by the author toward the production of a book entitled The Art and Architecture of Saint Joseph's Basilica. The book is slated for release in the spring. Please take advantage of this special opportunity. The cards are available at the rectory and the sacristy. CHRISTMAS OFFERINGS Christmas is a time for sharing and giving. We all extend gifts to family members and friends, even dogs and cats get presents. The most important person is Jesus Christ Himself and he deserves our renewed heart and converted mind. Usually people ask how much should we give. This question has to be answered by every individual themselves. It is a tradition in the majority of our country that a Christmas gift to Jesus and His Church equals your monthly contribution. PIEROGI SALE Reminder - Those who placed orders for pierogi and babka will be able to pick them up on Saturday, December 15th from 4:00 to 5:30pm and Sunday, December 16th from 9:00-10:30 am.

5 Saint Joseph Basilica December 16, During the season of Advent, the St. Joseph School Student Council will be conducting a coat, hat, scarf, and glove drive in conjunction with the Webster Police Department. These items will be brought by the Police Department to the Webster Food Share for distribution. All sizes, from infant to adult, are accepted. Articles of clothing should be clean and wearable. Winter coats, hats, scarf and gloves should be dropped off at the school office between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm by December 19th. Thank you! On Saturday, December 8th the Route 395 League kicked-off their intramural league games at St. Joseph School. We are proud to be hosting all the intramural games this season. Games are co-ed and participants are in Grades 3 and 4. Other schools participating in the league include Trinity Catholic Academy, St. James, and St. Joseph North Grosvenordale. Games are from 9:00am to 10:00am each Saturday. Please stop by and see our future stars. Please come and join us for pancakes, ham and eggs for $7 per person, and children 5 and under free The Catholic Girls Club meets on the third Saturday of the month between October and May, from 2-3pm. At this club, we discuss a female saint or Marian feast day and then do a corresponding craft or activity. Our location is at the Emmaus Center across from Sacred Heart Church in Webster, (please use Day Street entrance). The club is open to girls who are ages 6 and up. There are no fees or long-term commitments. (Flp 4, 6) Uporczywe wołanie Jana Chrzciciela, obrazy, którymi się posługuje, i radykalizm jego świadectwa mogą stworzyć wrażenie, że nawrócenie jest czymś trudnym czy wręcz niewykonalnym. Tymczasem gdy ludzie pytają go, na czym konkretnie ma polegać przemiana życia, Jan Chrzciciel udziela prostych odpowiedzi. Jego polecenia są zdroworozsądkowe i nieprzekraczające ludzkich możliwości. Nawrócenie nie jest dokonywaniem rzeczy niemożliwych, lecz odkrywaniem prostoty codziennego życia z Bogiem. SPOWIEDŹ ADVENTOWA Spowiedź Adwentowa dla naszych parafian odbędzie się w poniedziałek, 17 grudnia o godz. 18:30. W konfesjonałach posługiwać będą zaproszeni księża z innych parafii. Serdecznie zachęcamy do skorzystania z sakramentu pokuty i przygotowania się w ten sposób na nadchodzące Święta. Przypominamy, że w naszej parafii spowiedź odbywa się w każdą sobotę po Mszy św. o godz. 7:00 oraz o godz. 15:00. Istnieje również możliwość umówienia się na indywidualną spowiedź. Osoby, które nie mogą dotrzeć na spowiedź z powodu wieku lub choroby prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym i umówienie indywidualnej wizyty w domu. Zapraszamy wszystkich parafian to skorzystania z tej wyjątkowej okazji do uwielbienia Boga za ich wstawiennictwem w każdą środę w czasie Mszy Wotywnej i Nowenny do św. Józefa. SERDECZNIE ZAPRASZAMY FUNDUSZ EMERYTALNY DLA OSÓB KONSEKROWANYCH Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na wsparcie dla osób konsekrowanych na emeryturze. W sumie na tym etapie życia znajduje się ponad sióstr, braci i księży zakonnych. Wiele z tych osób przez lata otrzymywało małe stypendia za wykonywaną posługę, co w konsekwencji sprawiło, że ich fundusz emerytalny jest bardzo niski. W związku z ciągłym wzrostem kosztów utrzymania, wiele wspólnot zakonnych zmaga się z trudnościami w zapewnieniu opieki swoim starszym braciom i siostrom. Z wdzięcznością za wszelkie dobra, które dzięki ich posłudze mogliśmy otrzymać, wesprzyjmy ich naszą pomocą, mając świadomość, że niejednokrotnie poświęcili całe swoje życie w służbie innym. ŚWIĄTECZNE OFIAROWYWANIE Boże Narodzenie to czas dzielenia się i obdarowywania. Wszyscy wręczmy prezenty członkom rodziny i przyjaciołom. Najważniejszą osobą w tym niezwykłym wydarzeniu jest sam Jezus Chrystus. To jego powinniśmy obdarować przede wszystkim. Możemy obdarować go odnowionym sercem i oczyszczonym umysłem. Warto też rozważyć wsparcie dla Kościoła Chrystusowego tu na ziemi. Jezus jest uwielbiony we wspólnocie swojego Kościoła. Aby ta wspólnota mogła z radością wielbić Boga i dzielić się Ewangelią potrzebuje również środków materialnych. Czasami ludzie pytają: ile powinniśmy dać? Na to pytanie każdy musi odpowiedzieć sam, zgodnie z sumieniem i możliwościami. Tradycja mówi, że powinno się ofiarować równowartość miesięcznie składanych ofiar. Jest to oczywiście tylko podpowiedź i wskazówka, a nie nakaz. Wszystkim ofiarodawcom z góry składamy serdeczne Bóg zapłać! SPRZĘT DO ODŚNIEŻANIA Wraz z nadchodząca zimną priorytetem staje się problem z odśnieżaniam terenu przy kościele i szkole. W tym roku do tego tereny dochodzi jeszcze parking przy nowej sali gimnastycznej. Dlatego poszukujemy odśnieżarek, które jeszcze są w dobrym stanie.
