SANCTUARY VOTIVE CANDLES For the week of April 4, 2010 through April 10, 2010 Main Altar Candle I - In loving memory of Alice Knych Given by husband, son and family Blessed Mother Altar Candle I and II - In memory of Pope John Paul II on the 5 th anniversary of his death Given by Jan and Danuta Kolodziej EASTER SUNDAY April 4, 2010 The high point of our Christian faith and the most holy day in the Church year is celebrated today. If Christ has not been raised, then empty (too) is our preaching; empty too, your faith says Saint Paul (1 Corinthians 15:14). It is not easy for us to imagine the reality of Christ s passion and then the great glory of Easter. Even artists have difficulties portraying the risen Jesus. The glorified, risen Jesus seems beyond even the greatest artistic imagination. He must have looked different in some ways, as his followers fail to recognize him at first, even the ones who know him best, and Jesus has to assure them. He invited the skeptical Thomas to touch his wounds, he appears and eats breakfast with Peter and six others on the lake shore and in the intimacy of a shared meal at Emmaus two disciples realize who he is as he takes bread, blesses and breaks it, and gives it to them. They see him by his actions. We receive this same Jesus as the bread blessed and broken at every Eucharist, and this is not just a symbol: the Lord truly gives himself to us. True faith transforms us. Some have a sudden conversion, while for others it is a slower process that unfolds over time. If we come to know the truth of Easter it will overflow from our own life into those around us. WESOLEGO ALLELUJA - HAPPY EASTER The second collection next weekend is directed toward the Utility and Energy Costs EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE COLLECTION The second collection today is directed toward the educational excellence at Saint Joseph School. The majority of our parishioners were educated and formed their character at Saint Joseph s. Needless to say they carry many fond memories of this educational institution which made such an impact on their entire life. During the Easter season there are many alumni who are coming home from different states to celebrate Easter. Likewise, they owe their success to their Alma Mater, St. Joseph School. We are pleased to inform you that the enrollment is increasingly growing across the board. In fact, the large number of applicants for Pre-K next year will enable us to separate the 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds with different programs and different rooms. This would prevent the children from repeating the same material if they are two years in the Pre-K program. In this new arrangement Preschool will accommodate only 3-year-olds with a program adjusted to their age and Pre-K for 4-year olds as an immediate preparation for Kindergarten with an advanced curriculum. In doing so we are responding to the national trend which emphasizes the 3-year-old organized educational setting.. Whether you are a graduate of Saint Joseph School, a visitor or a parishioner, we trust that the quality of education of children is the highest priority in your

Page 3 April 4, 2010-4 kwiecien 2010 r. charitable giving. The students of Saint Joseph School depend on your assistance, need your support and count on your commitment and generosity. The second collection this weekend will be taken by the students of Saint Joseph School. If you are not prepared to make an offering today, you may make your contribution at a later date. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY A nine-day novena to the Divine Mercy began on Good Friday at the 6:30 p.m. services and prayed each morning thereafter at the 6:30 p.m. Mass. It will conclude with services on April 11 th at 3 p.m. with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, singing of the chaplet and benediction. The devotion to the Divine Mercy was practiced in various countries throughout the centuries. Pope John Paul II extended it to the Universal Church and declared that it be celebrated on the second Sunday fo Easter called Divine Mercy Sunday. The Pope also enriched this Sunday by granting aa plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father). You are required to visit the church or chapel on this day and make an intention to obtain the indulgence for one aperson, living or dead. The first Sunday devotion to the Divine Mercy will not be held today. We encourage the people to make a privae novena to the Divine Mercy. ANOINTING SERVICE On Sunday, April 11 th, at 2:30 p.m. the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered in our St. Joseph Basilica. Traditionally, the Sacred Heart Society members have been available to assist with the elderly, wheelchairs etc. in the church. We encourage parishioners to bring their loved ones for this special sacramental opportunity. THE RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL LIVES OF AMERICAN 18-23 YEAR OLDS Dr. Christian Smith of the University of Notre Dame will offer a special lecture on research that has been done on the subject of the religious and spiritual lives of Americana 18-23 year olds. It is not likely that any American s research on this vitally important subject surpasses that of Dr. Smith. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be given in the Rehm Library (in Smith Hall) at the College of the Holy Cross this Wednesday, April 7 th ; at 7:30 p.m. We hope you will attend. For further information please visit: http://www.holycross.edu/crec/calendar/lecture_series/deitchman _lecture. APRIL BIRTHDAYS Happy birthday wishes go out to the following parishioners who will celebrate their 90's birthdays this month. Stasia Bardy, Walter Gontowski, Stephanie Kos, Sally Laskowski, Michaline Moroz, Esther Popiak, Harriet Stoica, Helen Thompson, and Bessie Tremblay. May your days be filled with love and laughter and healthy days out in the spring sunshine! Some facts about April: The Romans called the month Aprilis. It may come from a word meaning to open or it may come from Aphrodite, the Greek name for the goddess of love. Some animals that hibernate are usually coming out of their burrows in April. The birds fly back northward or they settle down to have their families. The bees and butterflies begin to gather nectar from the first flowers of the season. Daisy and the sweet pea are the flowers of the month. Diamond is the birthstone. April is the month when our beloved Pope John Paul II went to heaven to receive his just reward.
