PALM SUNDAY MARCH 24, 2013 The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. Isaiah 50:7a THE FACE OF JESUS In all the readings for this Sunday we can look at the face of Jesus. There are two Gospel passages, both from the Gospel of Luke. The first tells of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Crowds greeted him with shouts of Hosanna! The second tells of Jesus departure from Jerusalem, carrying the cross on his back. The same crowds derided him and shouted for his crucifixion. We first see a face shining with glory, but in a few short days a face dark with blood and sorrow. Set between these two contrasting Gospel passages are equally contrasting readings from the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Isaiah describes a suffering servant who willingly submits to beating and humiliation, not even turning away his face. He knows he belongs to God and will not be put to shame. Paul writes to the Philippians of Christ Jesus, the true Suffering Servant, who willingly emptied himself to become human. But this man, with a very human face, has now been exalted by God above all others. The second collection this week is for Higher Utility and Energy Costs. Easter Sunday second collection is designated for Educational Excellence at St. Joseph School LITURGICAL SERVICES DURING HOLY WEEK Triduum. Why we celebrate one event over three days. The Paschal Triduum, Latin for three days, commemorates Christ s redemptive passage through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinct parts. In accordance with the custom in biblical times, each day begins in the evening. The first day of the Triduum begins with the Lord s supper on the evening of Holy Thursday. In the silence of the tomb on Good Friday the death of Jesus, Son of God, is confirmed. He did not simply lose consciousness, he truly died. Holy Saturday, while the Church silently prepares for the Easter Vigil celebration in the evening, the reality of Jesus death and resurrection comes into focus. Easter morning is the watersheds event of our life of faith. The resurrection gives baptism its meaning, alleluia its joy and the Church its hope. For the full 50 days of the Easter Season, the Church will rejoice and celebrate the wonders of these three days.
Page 3 HOLY THURSDAY. Mass of the Lord s Supper at 7pm (bilingual). This sacred liturgy commemorates the establishment of the sacrament of the Eucharist and the Priesthood. We invite parishioners, all the school children and their parents to participate in this solemn liturgy with the Rite of Reception of the Holy Oils, Washing of the Feet of the twelve apostle representatives of the parish and procession to the Repository. It has been a tradition to visit area Catholic churches during the evening to say a prayer at the Repository. Keep this tradition on-going with your children as a family. Our Basilica will be open until 10pm for your private prayers and reflection. GOOD FRIDAY. No morning Mass. At 3pm the Liturgy of the Lord s Passion will begin at our Basilica with adoration of the relics of the Holy Cross and distribution of Communion. At 6:30pm adoration services at the Holy Sepulcher in the Basilica led by the Sacred Heart Society and the choir, followed by the singing of Gorzkie Zale. At 7:30pm reflection/adoration in the Polish language. Reminder: Good Friday is a day of Fast and Abstinence, which means only one full meatless meal and two light meals may be taken. Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land. The offering given at the adoration of the Cross is designated for the Holy Land which sustains various ministries and assists the Franciscan Friars in their works and to preserve the Holy Land s precious Christian Community. The Good Friday Collection is the primary means of support for this work. Today keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land and serving the people here is the urgent goal of the Church. Holy Land Christians, all the clergy and religious working there deeply appreciate your help. HOLY SATURDAY. No morning Mass. Swieconka. Traditional blessing of food will take place on Holy Saturday in the school cafeteria every half-hour from 9am to 12 noon and from 1pm to 3pm. If anyone wishes to have a priest bless the food at their home please call the rectory before March 27. The Easter Vigil will begin at 7:15pm with the blessing of new fire, paschal candle and water followed by the Resurrection Liturgy. During this important celebration the Basilica Choir will assist the liturgy. At the Easter Vigil we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist and the Rite of Reception) into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Kaileigh Strong is receiving the Sacrament of Baptism. Note: Holy Water will be available at the conclusion of the services and on Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday. The Resurrection Celebration (bilingual will take place at 6am with a solemn procession from the Holy Sepulcher followed by the Mass. We kindly ask all parish organizations to take part in the services on this most solemn day of the year. The 9:30am Mass is the special children s Mass and we invite all the parents to participate with their children. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS We are pleased to announce that Christopher Mahlert, a fourth grade student at our school was awarded the Catholic Emmanuel Radio First Annual Diocesan Award for his essay What Making First Communion Means To Me. Christopher and his parents visited Emmanuel Radio (1230am) for a photo session and to tape his reading. The entire school, especially his teacher, Sister Jeanne, are proud of Christopher s achievement. Congratulations! PROFESSIONAL DAY WORKSHOP Recently our First Grade Teacher, Lisa Boguszewski attended a workshop designed for accreditation and specifically for visiting committee members. Several issues were discussed regarding recommendations and indicators. Important information was geared toward elementary schools regarding Health and Safety Issues and how a school is judged especially locked doors to boiler/furnace rooms or where a child may encounter dangerous machinery or substances. Judgment of a school should be based solely on its own criteria and not compared to other schools. This was a very informative and helpful session. -Lisa Boguszewski THE 125TH ANNIVERSARY JUBILEE BOOK - is in its final stages to be sent to the publisher. This will be a unique book with more detailed information than previous editions of our special books. We appreciate your patience. Liturgia Niedzieli Palmowej ma nam pomóc w doświadczeniu kłopotliwego dysonansu albo raczej rażącego rozdarcia. Ono jest w nas, bo to my jesteśmy zdolni krzyczeć Hosanna i Ukrzyżuj. Jednocześnie przyjąć i odrzucić. To rozdarcie wciąż w nas jest. Ono powinno nas dzisiaj zaboleć, żebyśmy chcieli czekać na wyzwolenie i prosili Jezusa, abyśmy mogli pojąć naukę płynącą z Jego męki.
Page 5 NABOŻEŃSTWA W WIELKIM TYGODNIU Triduum Paschalne, po łacinie trzy dni, upamiętnia przejścia Chrystusa przez odkupieńczą śmierć, grób i zmartwychwstanie do nowego życia. Kościół celebruje Triduum jako jedno wydarzenie składające się z trzech odrębnych części. Zgodnie ze zwyczajem w czasach biblijnych, każdy dzień zaczyna się wieczorem. W Wielki Czwartek zapraszamy na Mszę Wieczerzy Pańskiej o godz. 19:00 kiedy to będziemy świętowali ustanowienie sakramentów Eucharystii i Kapłaństwa. Wielkoczwartkowa liturgia jest ubogacona o dodatkowe uroczyste elementy: przyjęcie Świętych Olejów, konsekrowanych przez biskupa w Katedrze, obmycie nóg przedstawicielom parafii oraz przeniesienie Najświętszego Sakramentu do Ciemnicy. Tradycją jest również prywatna adoracja Najświętszego Sakramentu po zakończonej Liturgii. Zachęcamy do rodzinnych nawiedzin. Drzwi naszej Bazyliki będą otwarte tego dnia do godz. 22:00. Wielki Piątek jest tradycyjnie jedynym dniem w ciągu roku, którym nie odprawia się Mszy św. Uroczysta Adoracja Krzyża rozpocznie się o godz. 15:00. Adoracja Grobu Pańskiego prowadzona przez Sacred Heart Society rozpocznie się o godz. 18:00, a bezpośrednio po adoracji Gorzkie Żale. Adoracja w języku polskim od godz. 19:30. Przypomnienie: Wielki piątek jest dniem ścisłego postu, a zatem wolno jest zjeść jedynie jeden pełny posiłek do syta, a kolejne dwa bardzo skromne jedynie dla zaspokojenia głodu. Obowiązuje też całkowite powstrzymanie się od pokarmów mięsnych. Ofiary zbierane w czasie Adoracji Krzyża są przeznaczone na utrzymanie Grobu Pańskiego lub innych miejsc kultu w Ziemi Świętej. Chrześcijanie w tamtym regionie muszą zmagać się z wieloma wyzwaniami, które wiążą się z wyznawaniem wiary i odpowiedzialnością za święte miejsca, do których przybywają pielgrzymi każdego dnia. W Wielką Sobotę nie ma Mszy porannej. Poświęcenie pokarmów w szkolnej kafeterii co pół godziny począwszy od 9:00 do 15:00 z godzinną przerwą od 12:00 do 13:00. Liturgia Wigilii Paschalnej rozpocznie się o godz. 19:00 od poświęcenia ognia i zapalenia Paschału oraz błogosławieństwa wody. Woda święcona będzie dostępna po Liturgii i w Niedzielę Wielkanocną. Mszę Rezurekcyjną rozpoczynamy w Niedzielę Wielkanocną uroczystą procesją o godz. 6:00. Natomiast na godz. 9:30 zapraszamy wszystkie dzieci wraz z rodzicami na Mszę dedykowaną szczególnie dla najmłodszych. Dzieci z młodszych klas (1-2) po nabożeństwie powracają do klas, natomiast starsze dzieci po odbyciu spowiedzi wracają z rodzicami do domu.
