St. Joseph s Table The Italian Catholic Federation is hosting a St. Joseph s Table on Saturday, March 18th, after the 5:00 pm Mass and after the Italian Padre Pio Mass at 7:00 pm in the Stokes Center. Proceeds from donations will go to St. Francis Borgia. All parishioners and guests are invited! RESPECT LIFE In the Dark The following words were written by a young lady who had an abortion and illustrates a common theme the Church encounters in those who have had abortions. Cases like this show the need for the efforts the pro-life movement makes to counsel those who feel pressured to abort and to give them alternatives: The counseling was only pro-abortion. No information was given to me about pro-life choices or agencies at the abortion clinic. They also told me it wouldn t hurt. It was extremely painful. I was not told anything about how this would affect me for the rest of my life. Lenten Regulations (from March 1, 2017, Ash Wednesday, to the Paschal Triduum) Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. St. Patrick s Day, March 17, falls on a Friday this year. Cardinal Cupich has given a general dispensation to Catholics from abstaining from meat on this day. Instead, Catholics in the Archdiocese of Chicago who choose to make use of this general dispensation are asked to substitute another form of penance for the Lenten Friday abstinence.

From the Pastor s Desk... Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. I think that these words from today s Gospel can be a guide and a signpost for our Lenten journey, which we started on Ash Wednesday. I will never forget my first experience of Ash Wednesday in Chicago at Holy Innocents Parish. The weak hands from the distribution of ashes to thousands of foreheads, the tired and misinterpreting lips from the repetition of the same formula, and joyful beating heart from seeing a great example of faith and conversion. Unfortunately, throughout the Lenten season, never again did I see these faithful members, who most likely began and ended Lent with Ash Wednesday. Even though the ashes that we receive on Ash Wednesday are blessed, they will not bring us miraculous changes or grant us salvation. The ashes are only a sign and a call to conversion, which we have to accomplish on our own. I would like to encourage you to participate in the Lenten Services and Retreat. Each year, on this second Sunday of Lent, we hear the story of the Transfiguration. The shining splendor of the Lord lights our way as we continue our Lenten journey of conversion. Like Peter, we would like to remain on the mountain. Yet we are called to encounter the Lord again and again as we slowly move with him to Calvary. In the call of Abram, which we hear in today s first reading, God blesses Abram abundantly. Abram left everything familiar behind and went as the Lord God directed him. On this second Sunday of Lent, we might ask ourselves where God is calling us. The Gospel account of the Transfiguration might provide the answer. There we are given a glimpse of the glory that awaits the Lord at his resurrection. As baptized believers, we share in the promise of a shared resurrection. As Easter approaches, let us keep our eyes fixed on both the mountain of transfiguration and Calvary s hill as we continue to purify our minds and hearts. I would like to invite and encourage you to participate in all the Masses, devotions, Lenten Services, and the Retreat during this Lenten season. As with previous years, you are invited to participate in the Stations of the Cross, and the Passion of the Christ Play on Friday, March 17th at 5:30 pm. The play will be performed by the same group that we had last year. This is also an opportunity to go on the pilgrimage to Bloomington for the American Passion Play on Saturday, April 8th, 2017. I was there before, and I m going this year, and I would like to encourage everyone to come with us. Details are in the bulletin. Change my heart o God, make it ever true. Change my heart o God, may I be like You. You are the Potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me, this is what I pray. Rev. Richard Milek

7:30 pm. Obejmuję modlitwą wielkopostną każdego z Was i całą Waszą Rodzinę i życzę Wam, aby ten Wielki Post zbliżył Was jeszcze bardziej do Boga i umocnił Wasze przymierze z Nim. Ks. Ryszard Miłek
