In our Catholic tradition, we remember in a special way all of our deceased relatives and friends during November. Here at Mt. Carmel, we have Special Masses next Saturday November 2. To enroll your loved ones, please use the envelopes included in your envelope packets. (Extra envelopes are found at the entrances of the church.) The envelopes may be placed in any collection or mailed to the rectory before November 1. All Souls Candles will be available this weekend at the church entrances. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed. The dead are not feared, but deeply loved, and this joyful family feast points both to age-old customs and Resurrection faith. The Archdiocese of Newark takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, religious, and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at 201-407-3256. As Winter approaches, we at OLMC will again try to help alleviate some of the suffering of our homeless and neighborhood poor. Using the wood collection box by Blessed Mother Altar, you may leave food cards (McDonald s, Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Shop Rite) or cash to be distributed to our the needy. God Will Reward You! November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Dziękujemy wszystkim ofiarodawcom staropolskim Bóg Zapłać!!! ŚWIĘTO ŚWIĘTYCH APOSTOŁÓW SZYMONA I JUDY TADEUSZA - 28 PAŹDZIERNIKA Ewangelie wymieniają św. Szymona w ścisłym gronie uczniów Pana Jezusa. Jest on chyba najmniej znanym spośród nich. Ewangelie wspominają o nim tylko trzy razy. Łukasz wprost daje Szymonowi przydomek Zelotes, czyli gorliwy. Szymon Kananejczyk jest wymieniany zawsze obok św. Jakuba i św. Judy Tadeusza, "braci" (stryjecznych albo ciotecznych) Chrystusa, czyli Jego kuzynów. Czy był nim także i Szymon? Według Ewangelii św. Mateusza wydaje się to być pewnym. Także i w tradycji chrześcijańskiej mamy nikłe wiadomości o Szymonie. Miał być bratem Apostołów: Jakuba Młodszego i Judy Tadeusza. Będąc krewnym Pana Jezusa, miał według innych zasiąść na stolicy jerozolimskiej po Jakubie Starszym i Jakubie Tradycja łączy go ze św. Judą Tadeuszem dlatego, jakoby miał z nim głosić Ewangelię i razem z nim miał ponieść śmierć. Według tej tradycji obchodzi się ich święto tego samego dnia. O życiu św. Judy nie wiemy prawie nic. Miał przydomek Tadeusz, czyli "Odważny". Był bratem św. Jakuba Młodszego, Apostoła. Był jednym z krewnych Jezusa. Prawdopodobnie jego matką była Maria Kleofasowa. Juda jest autorem jednego z listów Nowego Testamentu. Sam w nim nazywa siebie bratem Jakuba. Po Zesłaniu Ducha Świętego Juda głosił Ewangelię w Palestynie, Syrii, Egipcie i Mezopotamii; niektóre z wędrówek misyjnych odbył razem ze św. Szymonem. Jest czczony jako patron od spraw beznadziejnych.
UROCZYSTOŚĆ WSZYSTKICH ŚWIĘTYCH 1 LISTOPADA WSPOMNIENIE WSZYSTKICH WIERNYCH ZMARŁYCH (DZIEŃ ZADUSZNY) 2 LISTOPADA Dzisiejsza uroczystość ma charakter bardzo radosny. Wspominamy bowiem dzisiaj wszystkich tych, którzy żyli przed nami i wypełniając w swoim życiu Bożą wolę, osiągnęli wieczne szczęście przebywania z Bogiem w niebie. Kościół wspomina nie tylko oficjalnie uznanych świętych, czyli tych beatyfikowanych i kanonizowanych, ale także wszystkich wiernych zmarłych, którzy już osiągnęli zbawienie i przebywają w niebie. Widzi w nich swoich orędowników u Boga i przykłady do naśladowania. Wstawiennictwa Wszystkich Świętych wzywa się w szczególnie ważnych wydarzeniach życia Kościoła. Śpiewa się wówczas Litanię do Wszystkich Świętych, która należy do najstarszych litanijnych modlitw Kościoła i jako jedyna występuje w księgach liturgicznych (w liturgii Wigilii Paschalnej; ponadto także w obrzędzie poświęcenia kościoła i ołtarza oraz w obrzędzie święceń. W pierwszych wiekach chrześcijaństwa w Kościele nie wspominano żadnych świętych. Najwcześniej zaczęto oddawać cześć Matce Bożej. Potem kultem otoczono męczenników, nawiedzając ich groby w dniu narodzin dla nieba, czyli w rocznicę śmierci. W IV wieku na Wschodzie obchodzono jednego dnia wspomnienie wszystkich męczenników. Z czasem zaczęto pamiętać o świątobliwych wyznawcach: papieżach, mnichach i dziewicach. Większego znaczenia uroczystość Wszystkich Świętych nabrała za czasów papieża Bonifacego IV (+ 615). Już ok. 800 r. wspomnienie Wszystkich Świętych obchodzone było w Irlandii i Bawarii, ale 1 listopada. Za papieża Grzegorza IV (828-844) cesarz Ludwik rozciągnął święto na całe swoje państwo. W 935 r. Jan XI rozszerzył je na cały Kościół. W ten sposób lokalne święto Rzymu i niektórych Kościołów stało się świętem całego Kościoła. 1 listopada zapraszamy na Eucharystię w języku polskim o godzinie 8:00 AM, oraz w języku angielskim o 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM oraz 7:00 PM. Kościół wspomina dzisiaj w liturgii wszystkich wierzących w Chrystusa, którzy odeszli już z tego świata, a teraz przebywają w czyśćcu. Przekonanie o istnieniu czyśćca jest jednym z dogmatów naszej wiary. Obchód Dnia Zadusznego zainicjował w 998 r. św. Odilon (+1048) - czwarty opat klasztoru benedyktyńskiego w Cluny (Francja). Praktykę tę początkowo przyjęły klasztory benedyktyńskie, ale wkrótce za ich przykładem poszły także inne zakony i diecezje. W XIII w. święto rozpowszechniło się na cały Kościół. W wieku XIV zaczęto urządzać procesję na cmentarz do czterech stacji. Piąta stacja odbywała się już w kościele, po powrocie procesji z cmentarza. Przy stacjach odmawiano modlitwy za zmarłych i śpiewano pieśni żałobne. W Polsce tradycja Dnia Zadusznego zaczęła się tworzyć już w XII w., a z końcem wieku XV była znana w całym kraju. W 1915 r. papież Benedykt XV na prośbę opata-prymasa benedyktynów zezwolił, aby tego dnia każdy kapłan mógł odprawić trzy Msze święte: w intencji poleconej przez wiernych, za wszystkich wiernych zmarłych i według intencji Ojca Świętego. Od południa dnia Wszystkich Świętych i przez cały Dzień Zaduszny w kościołach i kaplicach publicznych można uzyskać odpust zupełny za zmarłych, ale tylko jeden raz. Warunki zyskania odpustu są następujące: 1) pobożne nawiedzenie kościoła lub kaplicy, 2) odmówienie "Ojcze nasz" i "Wierzę w Boga", 3) dowolna modlitwa w intencji Ojca św., 4) bycie w stanie łaski uświecającej i Komunia św. W dniach 1-8 listopada można także pozyskać odpust zupełny za nawiedzenie cmentarza pod wyżej wymienionymi warunkami. W pozostałe dni roku za nawiedzenie cmentarza pozyskuje się odpust cząstkowy. 2 listopada zapraszamy na Eucharystię w języku polskim o godzinie 8:00 AM i 10:00 AM oraz w języku angielskim o 7:00 AM i 12:00 PM.
