Arrangements can also be made for regular visitations at home or hospital for Holy Communion and/or Confession. We urge you to keep us aware of parishioners who are ill in the hospital or at home. Marriages: Please make arrangements at least one year in advance. Couples are urged to solemnize their vows at a Nuptial Mass. Baptisms: The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated each month on the First Sunday (in English) and on the Third Sunday (in Polish). A required Baptismal Program for Parents is conducted at 1:00 pm on the second Sunday of the month in Polish and on the last Sunday in English. Chances: $ 10.00 Available at church entrances or at the rectory. WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE PRAYERS AT MASS? At Masses today, Catholic parishes in the United States are, for the first time in about forty years, using a new English translation of all the prayers. These prayers are found in The Roman Missal, the large book that we are accustomed to seeing the priest use at our Eucharistic liturgies. In the early part of this century, the late Blessed Pope John Paul II called for the original Latin Missal (the official prayer book for Mass for the entire Catholic Church worldwide) to be retranslated into the various languages prayed throughout the world. In particular, he and other Church leaders felt that the English translation could be improved. He called for new translations that would be much more like the Latin texts upon which they are based, so that all Catholics throughout the world would become more closely united by praying translations that were closer to the original. The words that we pray at Mass express our beliefs; it is important that the translations capture and express these beliefs clearly. The translation process has come to a culmination now, and today we begin using this new translation at Mass. We have prepared well for this at OLMC. The first month might be uncomfortable but soon, the changes will feel normal.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago in northern Europe, the growing dark and winter weather in Advent forced people to remove the wheels from their carts and replace them with snow runners. The wheels were hung high in the rafters of the house, fitted out with lanterns, and wound tightly with evergreen boughs. The first wreaths were windows into heaven, a source of light, a comforting sign of the victory of the light of Christ over our world s dark wildernesses, its mountainous obstacles, its valleys of need. The Advent wreath started in the home, and only later appeared in church. Its four candles represent the four Sundays of our journey: typically three purple, one rose. Why not set a wreath in your own home as a place for Advent prayer? Don t let a shortage of purple candles discourage you: some use a deep blue, others have white candles and weave blue and purple flowers, seashells, and pine cones into the green. When the sun sets tonight, light a single candle, sing a verse of a well-loved Advent hymn, and name a mountain to be leveled, a valley to be filled. If you have ordered Christmas Cards, they may be picked up in the Sacristy or at the rectory. Adwent to daleki tłumny fryz pełen postaci i zdarzeń, nieczytelny i pozbawiony sensu, gdyby w Betlejem (...) nie narodziło się dziecko, któremu nadano imię Jezus, a którego matką była Maryja (... ) Adwent to pustynia, na której widać wyniosłą postać odzianą w skórę wielbłąda. Adwent to nasze życie. Adwent to liturgia. (...) Adwent to czas przychodzenia Tego, który jest zawsze, znajomy i nieznajomy." (Czas otwarty, Poznań-Warszawa 1972, s. 65-66). Okresem Adwentu rozpoczynamy nowy rok kościelny, liturgiczny. Samo słowo Adwent" oznacza przyjście naszego Zbawiciela, którego powinniśmy oczekiwać i na to spotkanie z Nim trzeba nam się przygotować. Pierwsza część Adwentu (do 16 grudnia) akcentuje prawdę o paruzji, czyli o ponownym przyjściu Chrystusa na świat, na sąd, W przypadku każdego z nas będzie to spotkanie w godzinę śmierci. Liturgia adwentowa wzywa nas do czujności, do czuwania, abyśmy nie zmarnowali życia. Druga część Adwentu (od 17 grudnia) jest czasem przygotowania na pamiątkę pierwszego przyjścia Pana Jezusa, tzn. na uroczystość Bożego Narodzenia. Główne, adwentowe postaci - to Najświętsza Maryja Panna, Patronka adwentowego czuwania; prorok Izajasz zapowiadający przyjście Zbawiciela i największy z proroków św. Jan Chrzciciel, który bezpośrednio przygotowywał lud na spotkanie Mesjasza, wzywając do prostowania Jemu ścieżek w naszym sercu. Chociaż w Adwencie dominuje kolor szat fioletowy, nie ozdabia się ołtarza kwiatami, jak uczy Kościół, jest to czas radosnego oczekiwania, gdyż przychodzi nasz Zbawiciel, pełen miłosierdzia. Głównym zadaniem liturgii Kościoła jest oddawanie czci Panu Bogu przez Chrystusa w Duchu Świętym oraz umożliwianie nam przyjmowania daru zbawienia. Jednakże liturgia, od początku istnienia Kościoła, miała i ma wielkie znaczenie wychowawcze, wpływa na nasze życie poza świątynią, na nasze postępowanie i na nasze zwyczaje. Na Soborze Watykańskim II przypomniano duszpasterzom, aby poprzez liturgię dbali o wychowanie chrześcijan, o ich kulturę duchową, religijną (por. KL 19). Papież Paweł VI (1969) przypomniał, że obchodząc poszczególne okresy roku liturgicznego nasi wierni są pouczani, jak mają żyć po chrześcijańsku.
