Page Five Second Ordinary Sunday January 17, 2016 2016 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS The Hands of God s Mercy Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Archbishop Cupich asking that you make a pledge to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. The Appeal supports both parish and Archdiocesan ministries and services. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is The Hand of God s Mercy. We have all received God s mercy. By financially suppor ng the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we help to extend God s mercy to many, many others. As you review the mailing from Archbishop Cupich, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note that when our parish reaches its goal in paid pledges, 100% of the addi onal funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. PEREGRINATION OF THE DIVINE MERCY IMAGE IN OUR PARISH We have begun a profound me of grace in the life of the Church, the Jubilee Year of Mercy. As pope Francis notes, We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy. It is a wellspring of joy, serenity, and peace. As Saint Ferdinand community, one of the designated Jubilee parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago, we have begun a peregrina on of the Divine Mercy image. Peregrina on is a tradi onal form of devo on in which a holy image or figure is taken by church members from home to home for a period one week. Each evening family members and friends gather around for prayer, reading and reflec on. During this Jubilee of Mercy we want to foster an atmosphere of such devo on. We know that a faith community and families that invoke God s love experience His divine Mercy, differences within the family are reconciled, graces of perseverance are given, and God s blessings are felt. If you would like to par cipate in the peregrina on of the Divine Mercy image and receive it during a Sunday Mass to your home for one week, please contact our parish office at (773)622-5900 and ask for Sister Kamila. CONGRATULATIONS TO PATRICIA WENZL on receiving the Chris fedleses Award on Sunday, January 10 at Holy Name Cathedral The Chris fideles Award is given to Catholic laypeople who have, by par cipa ng in parish life, demonstrated the personal and ministerial renewal called for by the papal exhorta on Chris fideles Laici, calling the laity to the voca on of responsibility for the church s life springing from the gi and mission of their bap sm. Pat, along with her family, has been a devout and generous steward of the Catholic faith at our parish for over 30 years. She volunteers at St. Ferdinand in many ways. She is warm and friendly, and inspires others, especially teenagers, to become involved and grow in faith through service. She has been integral to the planning, organizing and leading of many parish events, especially as a chairperson of the Fish Fry, preparing and serving about 700 dinners each Friday during Lent. Pat is a great Catholic who wants to serve the Church and people without any selfish interests. 2015 CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT REQUESTS 2015 Contribution Statements are prepared by REQUEST only for any registered parishioner. Please call the Parish Office 773-622-5900 ex. 225 with your name, address and envelope number. The statement can be either picked up at the office or it will be mailed to your home address. January 17, 2016 Second Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen As a food technologist in the Quality Assurance game, I m exposed o en to industry publica ons addressing this topic or that. O en the ar cles don t directly affect my work day-to-day, but I enjoy reading up on industry trends to see what might be the next big thing. The other day, our VP QA sent a copy of Supermarket News my way. Covering nearly fi y pages, it took a li le me to read, but I really enjoyed it, and learned from it. The special edi on was en tled, Disruptors 2015: Food Industry Game Changers, and per this lead, At just 21, Wes Schroll is reinven ng grocery shopping for Millennials; Blue Apron s founders are cul va ng a new genera on of home chefs; and Whole Foods global grocery coordinator is a rac ng young consumers through product transparency. They are among SN s carefully curated list of 25 food industry Disruptors, who, for be er or for worse, are bucking the status quo and shaking up the way food retailers do business The publica on focused on individuals who are trying to disrupt the status quo in the supermarket game. Corporate gurus have been singing the think-outside-the-box song for years, and Supermarket News here put forth a few specific examples in the grocery arena. Like: Jason Hart is proving that good things can come in small--and store brand--packages. The CEO of Aldi U.S., based in Batavia, Ill., is rolling out the small-format, limitedassortment chain at a rapid pace, and evolving the banner as quickly as he is blanke ng new markets.
