Because it is creative, God s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. JOSEPH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM I am very pleased to announce that this past week Saint Joseph School Gym received a major donation of $1.4 million from a generous benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous for the time. With this donation and others, we will be able to resume construction as soon as possible. It is indeed a great Christmas gift which put a smile on the faces of all our schoolchildren and restored hope in the completion of the gym. We all owe our deep gratitude to this big-hearted donor. JOSEPH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS On Saturday, December 17 th, two of St. Joseph School s three FIRST LEGO League Robotics Teams competed at the Massachusetts (West) State Championship, also known as Robonautica, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Over 460 teams competed in FIRST LEGO League robotics competitions in Massachusetts this season. 72 of the top teams competed at WPI this past Saturday. This year s challenge theme was Animal Allies. Therefore, in addition to competing with an autonomous robot that teams designed and programmed to solve missions, teams had to identify a real-world problem that exists when human and animals interact. The ultimate goal is to design an innovative solution that adds value to society. Robo-Rescuers received a Second-Place Award in LEGO s Special Category, Gracious Professionalism. This award recognizes a team whose members show each other and other teams respect at all times. The award also acknowledges that the Robo-Rescuers recognize that both friendly competition and mutual gain are possible on and off the playing field. In addition, the team made it to the final round of the head-to-head robot competitions and finished in 4 th place. Robo-Rescuers members include 4 th Grade Students: Dale Boudreau, Lucas Boynton, and Will Colebourn and 6 th Grade Students: Nicholas Fennelly, Patrick Mahlert, Remonda Mankarios, Olivia Montione, and Julia Zdrok. Wings of Freedom received a First-Place Award for their project presentation. This award recognizes the team that effectively communicates the problem they identified and their proposed solution to both the judges and other potential supporters. Recently, this team received a Certificate of Appreciation from Marilyn Fels, the Community Cat Connection and Webster Animal Control for their outstanding efforts to make their Trap-Neuter-Release Program (TNR) more effective and efficient. The team spent time with both organizations engineering improvements to the trapping mechanisms of their traps as well as designing a unique tray to assist with the transportation of captured feral cats. Their design made the TNR process easier and safer for cats and humans. Members of the Wings of Freedom include 7 th Grade Students: Seth Boudreau, Jacob Boynton, Benjamin Colebourn, Benjamin Duval, and Szymon Mamro, and 8 th Grade Students: Jack Colebourn, Christopher Mahlert, and David Mankarios. - Beth Boudreau, Director of Advancement Cash Calendars - will be sold on Sat., Dec. 24 before and after 4:00pm Mass. HEATING SYSTEM UPDATE We announced last Sunday that the Basilica heating system is failing due to age. At the present time Wheeler Co. is making every effort to provide heat for the Church until we secure finances for a new unit which will cost approximately $15,000 $17, 000. We are grateful for a donation of $2,500 for this purpose from Anthony and Sheila Kusek.

WIGILIA NARODZENIA PAŃSKIEGO Wieczór wigilijny w tradycji polskiej jest najbardziej uroczystym i najbardziej wzruszającym wieczorem roku. Punktem kulminacyjnym przeżyć adwentowych w rodzinach chrześcijańskich jest wigilia Bożego Narodzenia. Posiada ona bardzo bogata liturgie domowa. Geneza tej liturgii sięga pierwszych wieków chrześcijaństwa. Obrzędy te i zwyczaje maja wiec stara tradycje. Wigilie w ogóle znane były juz w Starym Testamencie. Obchodzono je przed każda uroczystością, a nawet przed każdym szabatem. Było to przygotowanie do odpoczynku świątecznego. Izraelici zwali je "wieczorem". Słowo "wigilia" pochodzi z języka łacińskiego i oznacza czuwanie. Taki był dawniej zwyczaj w Kościele, że poprzedniego dnia przed większymi uroczystościami obowiązywał post i wierni przez całą noc oczekiwali na te uroczystość, modląc się wspólnie. W Polsce wigilia weszła na stale do tradycji dopiero w XVIII wieku. Główną jej częścią jest uroczysta wieczerza, złożona z postnych potraw. Wieczerza ta ma charakter ściśle rodzinny. Znany i powszechny jest obecnie w Polsce zwyczaj pozostawiania wolnego miejsca przy stole wigilijnym. Pozostawiając wolne miejsce przy stole wyrażamy pamięć o naszych bliskich, którzy nie mogą świąt spędzić z nami. Miejsce to może również przywodzić nam na pamięć zmarłego członka rodziny. Najważniejszym i kulminacyjnym momentem wieczerzy wigilijnej w Polsce jest zwyczaj łamania się opłatkiem. Czynność ta następuje po przeczytaniu Ewangelii o Narodzeniu Pańskim i złożeniu życzeń. Tradycja ta pochodzi od prastarego zwyczaju tzw. elogiów, jaki zachował się z pierwszych wieków chrześcijaństwa. Wieczerza wigilijna nawiązuje do uczt pierwszych chrześcijan, organizowanych na pamiątkę Ostatniej Wieczerzy. Zwyczaj ten oznacza również wzajemne poświęcenie się jednych dla drugich i uczy, że należy podzielić się nawet ostatnim kawałkiem chleba. Składamy sobie życzenia pomyślności i wybaczamy urazy. Nierozłącznym elementem Świąt Bożego Narodzenia jest kolęda. Nazwa kolęda pojawiła się dawno temu. Wywodzi się ona od słowa "calendae", tak bowiem Rzymianie nazywali początek każdego miesiąca. Owe kalendy, szczególnie styczniowe, czyli noworoczne, obchodzili bardzo radośnie, bawili się, śpiewali, składali sobie życzenia i obdarowywali prezentami. Kościół katolicki zniósł stary, pogański zwyczaj obchodzenia kalend, zachowała się jednak tradycja śpiewania pobożnych pieśni, sławiących narodziny Chrystusa, odwiedzania się w domach, kupowania świątecznych podarunków. W ten sposób do języka naszych dziadków weszło łacińskie słowo "calendae" czyli kolęda RELIGIA Katecheza Najbliższe najęcia katechetyczne odbędą się w poniedziałek 9 stycznia 2017.
