Luke 4:18a LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ. 3 Page 3 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time When he announced this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis highlighted today s Gospel episode, in which Jesus proclaims in his hometown synagogue his Spirit-anointed mission to fulfill the promises of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus mission then, says Pope Francis, is our mission now as Jesus disciples this Jubilee Year of Mercy: to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, a year of God s mercy. Pope Francis challenges us to translate Jesus mission to contemporary needs: to console by word and deed those materially or spiritually poor, to liberate those bound by modern society s new forms of slavery, to open the eyes of those blinded by their own self-interest, and to restore human dignity to all those from whom it has been stolen. To act with mercy in a spirit of joy! Saint John Paul II said that all Catholics have to develop in themselves an imagination of God s mercy. We have to discover in our daily lives situations which we, as children of God, can develop ourselves. There are many needs in our parish church and in our school which we have to rediscover. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Sadly this is the time of the year to remove our Christmas decorations to be stored away until next December. May the love, kindness and cooperation we experienced these past weeks live in our hearts and souls throughout We are grateful to the many dedicated parishioners who gave of their time and talent to create our Basilica into such an extra ordinary temple of peace and joy for all. NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH Please join us on Wednesday, January 27th at 7:00pm for our weekly Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph. This is an opportunity in this New Year to ask our Patron for needed graces for ourselves and our families by writing our intentions to be read during the Novena. Members of the Knights of Columbus will carry St. Joseph s statue from the Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel to the sanctuary. We appreciate your donations. FORGIVENESS Jesus asks us to forgive others in the same way that we have received forgiveness from God, When we forgive, we release the poison of resentment that builds up inside of us. We are thankful for all our donors for their generosity in supporting St. Joseph Parish. SCHOOL NEWS Save the date - Catholic Schools Week Theme is Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Mass at 9:30am at our Basilica on January 31st. Father Jonathan Slavinskas from St. Joseph Church in Charlton will be Celebrant and Homilist. The Partners in Education Award will be presented during the Mass. National Catholic School Week is an annual celebration in the United States. Education and formation is a life-long multidimensional process. Although some Catholic schools across the country are being closed, new schools and being opened. On a national level, 32% of Catholic Schools have a waiting list. The more society is becoming secular, liberal and disconnected the more people are turning to Catholic Schools. It proves that human fulfillment and happiness cannot be obtained without a close relationship with God. Our Open House - events begin on Sunday, Jan. 31 from 11:30am 1:00pm and on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd from 5:00-7:00pm and - the public is invited to a Pasta Supper at 5:00pm in the school cafeteria. (Łk 4, 18a) KONCERT KOLĘD Przypominamy i zapraszamy na koncert kolęd, który odbędzie się dziś o godz. 15:00 w parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej w Worcester. Oprócz naszego chóru i wystąpi jeszcze kilka chórów z okolicznych parafii. To ostatnia szansa, alby w tym roku posłuchać ulubionych kolęd. W świecie rozwiniętej techniki i komputerów nierzadko patrzymy na innych jak na trybiki skomplikowanego mechanizmu i sami też jesteśmy tak postrzegani. Trybiki potrzebne, ale możliwe do zastąpienia. Inne spojrzenie proponuje św. Paweł, który mówi o Kościele jako o żywym organizmie. W Kościele Mistycznym Ciele Chrystusa żaden członek nie może zostać zastąpiony przez inny. Jeśli któryś z członków niedomaga, w jakiś sposób cierpią wszystkie, a gdy któregoś zabraknie, to każdy traci coś niepowtarzalnie ważnego. Jest to dla nas wyzwanie, abyśmy nikogo nie lekceważąc, pomagali innym i sobie samym odnaleźć się w Chrystusie.

Franciszek wzywa nas do dostosowania misji Jezusa do współczesnych potrzeb: do pocieszania słowem i czynem osób ubogich materialnie czy duchowo, aby uwolnić tych, uwikłanych formy współczesnego niewolnictwa, by otworzyć oczy tych, którzy zaślepieni swoim własnymi sprawami i przywrócić godność ludzką tym wszystkim, którzy zostali jej pozbawieni. I ostatecznie działać miłosiernie w duchu radości! Święty Jan Paweł II powiedział, że wszyscy katolicy mają rozwijać w sobie wyobraźnię miłosierdzia.
