From the Pastor s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our parish celebration of our Patron, St. Turibius, is in two weeks on August 17 and 18. I want to encourage everyone to plan on attending our Parish Festival. wmlego@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 129 Our celebration will begin on Saturday with our Parish Festival after the 4:00 p.m. Mass. After Mass, our celebration will continue in our parish parking lot. It will be set up for games, dancing, bingo, music, a train for the kids (and adults) and of course food from the three cultures of our parish. The festival has become an event that brings us all together. It has become a time that allows us to experience the diverse cultures that are part of our parish community. We are raffling a KAWASAKI NINJA 650 Motorcycle. The tickets are $10.00 apiece. We are very grateful to a parishioner who has donated this motor cycle. The proceeds of this raffle will be used to help cover the cost of our annual celebration of the Feast of Guadalupe and also to help with various expenses for our parish. The raffle tickets will be sold after the Masses, in our parish office and also on the day of our parish festival. jdowling42@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 115 Parish Information Masses 4pm Saturday 6:45 am and 11 am Sunday Confessions 5-6pm Saturday Telephone: (773) 581-2730 We are also raffling off a TV set. USING OUR TIME WISELY A jar of honey lasts practically forever. The oldest jar of honey ever discovered was over five thousand years old. Honey is quite different from market-fresh produce, then; because most fruits and vegetables last only a few days, we treat them carefully. At this time of summer, we rush to find recipes for cherries and cucumbers so we won t waste a single one. We wouldn t feel that same urgency about honey. In our own way, we are as delightful and fragile as ripe produce. Today s readings urge us not to spoil, but to make good use of our limited time on earth. Ecclesiastes reminds us that because God provides for us now and always, we can manage our daily affairs without anxiety. Saint Paul encourages the Colossians to keep thoughts of heaven in everything they do, and Jesus himself asks us to treasure not earthly wealth, but God alone. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Si hoy escuchas su voz, no endurezcas tus corazones. Panie, Ty zawsze byłeś nam ucieczką. Office of the Archbishop 835 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-2030 312.534.8230 archchicago.org July 13, 2019 Dear Parishioners of Nativity of Our Lord and St. Gabriel Parish, I write to you with some difficult news. I have asked Father William McFarlane, former pastor of Nativity of Our Lord and St. Gabriel Parish, to step aside from ministry following receipt by the Archdiocese of an allegation of sexual abuse that occurred in 1997, before Father McFarlane entered the seminary. It is unclear at this time if the accuser was a minor at the time of the alleged abuse. However, in keeping with our policies, the allegation was reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Cook County State s Attorney. The person making the allegation has been offered the services of the Archdiocese s Office of Victim Assistance. I have appointed Deacon Robert Boharic as Pastoral Coordinator of Nativity of Our Lord and St. Gabriel Parish, effective immediately. As I am aware this is difficult news to hear, particularly as your parish undergoes a transition, let me assure you that we will communicate new information as it becomes available. Know that I will keep your parish community in my prayers and ask that you pray for me. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago Catechist Needed - Can YOU Help? Although we are just beginning summer soon and the thought of starting a new Religious Education school year may seem a bit premature, it is never too soon to begin planning for our students who are in need of individuals who are willing to share their faith. Our Religious Education program continues to grow and we are in need of catechists and aides for all grade levels. Who are we looking for? You - yes you - caring individuals who love their faith and want to make a difference in a child s faith formation. I think we have many parishioners who would be perfect for this and would be great at bringing the word of God to the children of our parish who are not able to attend Catholic schools. Why not give it a try, and volunteer as a catechist or aide. It will make a difference in your life and in the lives of the children you teach. Won t you please help us by volunteering as a catechist so that we can continue to accept all the children who come to us to be formed in the Catholic faith. We are also in need of adults who could help us with our traffic control at the beginning of classes and at dismissal. Because of the number of children in our program the traffic has created a problem around the Church and School. We need adults to help with this problem. If you could give us some help in trying to secure the safety of our children, it would be greatly appreciated. God Bless You!
