Dear Brothers and SIsters in Christ, From the Pastor s Desk This week we celebrate the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe. Let us all reflect on the meaning of the symbols that are contained in this Image of our Blessed Mother. The Image of Our Lady is actually an Aztec Pictograph which was read and understood quickly by the Aztec Indians. wmlego@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 129 THE LADY STOOD IN FRONT OF THE SUN - She was greater than their dreaded sun-god "Huitzilopochtli". HER FOOT RESTED ON THE CRESCENT MOON - She had clearly vanquished their foremost deity, the feather serpent "Quetzalcoatl". THE STARS STREWN ACROSS THE MANTLE - She was greater than the stars of heaven which they worshipped. She was a virgin and the Queen of the heavens for Virgo rests over her womb and the Northern Crown upon her head. She appeared on December 12, 1531, for the stars that she wore are the constellation of stars that appeared in the sky that day! THE BLUE and GREEN HUE OF HER MANTLE - She was a Queen for she wears the color of royalty. THE BLACK CROSS ON THE BROOCH AT HER NECK - Her God was that of the Spanish Missionaries, Jesus Christ her son. jdowling42@gmail.com (773) 581-2730 ext. 115 Parish Information Masses 4pm Saturday 6:45 am and 11 am Sunday Confessions 5-6pm Saturday Telephone: (773) 581-2730 THE BLACK BELT - She was with child for she wore the Aztec Maternity Belt. THE FOUR-PETAL FLOWER OVER THE WOMB - She was the "Mother of God." The flower was a special symbol of life, movement and deity - the center of the universe. HER HANDS ARE JOINED IN PRAYER - She was not God but clearly there was one greater than Her and she pointed her finger to the cross on her brooch. THE DESIGN ON HER ROSE-COLORED GARMENT - She is the "Queen of the Earth," for she is wearing a map of Mexico telling the Indians exactly where the apparition took place. Rev. THE BLUE GREEN HUE OF HER HERTLE - Była królową, ponieważ nosi kolor królewskości. KRZYŻ CZARNY NA BROSZCE W SKÓRZE - Jej Bóg był z hiszpańskich misjonarzy, Jezusa Chrystusa, jej syna. This annual appeal benefits 31,000 elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests women and men who have consecrated their lives to serving God and the Church. During the 2018 World Day for Consecrated Life, Pope Francis remarked, There is no growth without roots and no flowering without new buds. This analogy has certainly born out within the life of the Church in the United States. Senior religious were the roots that established Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies allowing generations of Catholics to flourish. Today, the example of older religious inspires younger members to persevere in mission and ministry. Yet many religious communities struggle to provide for aging members. Most elder religious served for small stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. Rising health-care costs and decreased income compound the struggle to provide adequate care. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious congregations implement long-range retirement strategies, even as they continue to serve the People of God. I recognize this is but one of numerous worthy causes in need of assistance; I ask simply that you give what you can. In thanksgiving for their faithful service, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for Religious and in praying for God s blessing on our nation s elderly religious. THANK YOU FROM THE ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Once again, the Annual St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Distribution was a huge success, due to the generosity of so many of you. Because of you, we were able to provide all of our families who attended with Turkeys and all the trimmings. At this time, we would like to thank everyone who helped us provide a great Thanksgiving dinner for all those in need. First of all, to all of you, the FAMILY OF ST. TURIBIUS, for your consistent help with donations of food and monetary gifts. You are the main support of our organization, and your generosity has always been something that we can depend on. BRAULIO ALVARADO, for setting up all the tables and chairs in the hall for the evening, Once again this year, a great big thank you to BINGO MIKE and the ST. TURIBIUS BINGO PATRONS, for their very generous weekly donations of food. Mike explained our Thanksgiving Distribution, he sent out the call for food, and the bingo patrons responded in the most wonderful way. A very special Thank You this year to one of our Parishioners, MR. KEN SHINKUS, for all of his hard work on the evening of our Distribution. Ken had heard that we were short handed and could use a little help, so he arrived early to help carry and set up all the food, stayed all evening to help distribute the food, and was one of the last people to leave the hall, after all the food was returned to the Pantry and the hall was finally cleaned. We often talk of the fact that we are the Family of St. Turibius, and, even though he is not a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, as a member of the St. Turibius Family, Ken did what families do, he stepped up to help us out. TURIBIUS RELIGIOUS EDUCATION STUDENTS. They arrived early in the evening, and carried all the stored food from the convent and the rectory over to the church basement. They helped set it up on the tables so that it could be viewed and distributed to all of our families. Their smiling faces and helping hands were visible all evening as they helped our clients fill their bags with food, and helped carry the food out to their waiting cars. They stayed until the very end and helped return all the food to the Pantry in the Rectory and helped clean up the hall. We cannot say enough about all these wonderful kids --- may God Bless them as they prepare for their Confirmation. To the members of the ST. TURIBIUS YOUTH GROUP, who volunteered two weekends of their time to stand outside the Jewel Food Store on Pulaski to collect funds for the needy, thereby enabling that Jewel store to donate packages of Turkey and all the trimmings to our Thanksgiving Distribution. Another great big Thank You to the JEWEL FOOD STORE on 53rd and Pulaski Road for their consistent donations of food for our Thanksgiving celebrations. In closing, we would like to thank everyone who helped make this evening a huge success. The Thanksgiving Distribution is a vital part of our Mission to serve, and it is also a complex evening involving a great deal of physical labor, which we could never accomplish without everyone s help. Our favorite method of thanking you is to say, God Bless You All and, once again, we couldn t have done it without you! A Very Special Thank You to the Parishioners of St. Turibius! Parish Mission Statement We Believe that God is Love, and when we live in love we live in God and God lives in us! Therefore we, the Parish Family of Saint Turibius, dedicate ourselves to living out Christ s Great Commandment: we will love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength, and we will show our love for God by the way we love and care for one another. To this end, we will respond to our baptismal call, strengthened by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit. As a Family of Faith that has an Attitude of Gratitude for the gifts God has given to us, we will share our time, our talent and our treasure with each other. We welcome into our parish family all people, because we believe that together we are the Body of Christ and together we can bring the love, peace, forgiveness, healing, and joy of Christ into our community in ways we never could have if we were to remain apart. May all who meet us, who worship with us, who work and play with us, know we are Christians by our love!
