Saint Joseph Basilica 3 SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME January 14, 2018 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, What are you looking for? - John 1:38 Speak, for your servant is listening. With those few words Samuel humbles himself and declares his loyalty and obedience to God. There are perhaps for many of us challenges in those words. Initially Samuel responds Here I am, but thinks it was Eli who called him. The idea of being a servant and the willingness to serve are what may be trials for us in terms of how we live. Samuel does not recognize the voice of the Lord. That, too, may be a problem for us. First we need to be listening. Are we listening, or are we merely going through the motions? Responding to God with Here I am is a magnificent way to react to God. It is not that God does not know where we are, but saying that can serve as a reminder to us that we are stewards, servants to Him, and it implies we are prepared to hear what He wants us to do. Here I am is said numerous times by those in the Old Testament. When Jesus says, Come follow me, as He does to us, do we hear Him, and even more important do we respond and do we follow? In order to do that properly we have to be prepared to serve Him and others. Thus, like Samuel, we need to listen, and then we need to serve. The real meaning of Christmas is the incarnation of the Son of God into human flesh which provides us the opportunity to look deeper into our lives and to see beyond the broken-ness and madness of this world - to ponder if there is something better and more stable to plan our lives. In the celebration of Christmas, Jesus came to humanity and in the Epiphany revealed himself to each one of us. On the day of His baptism which was celebrated on Monday, January 8, he extended an invitation to become part of the family of God and of the adopted children of the eternal Father. For those who are not baptized or away from the Catholic Church it is an open invitation to seek the Lord while he may be found and to call him while he is near. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS Sunday, January 28th, 9:30 a.m. Mass - Across our Nation, we will celebrate National Catholic Schools Week from Sunday January 28, through Saturday, February 3. The theme of this year s observance is Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead, and Succeed. The purpose of this annual observance is to bring awareness and a better understanding of the meaning of a Catholic education. Bishop McManus will be the main celebrant and homilist at our Basilica s 9:30 Family Mass. This date will coincide with the National Migration Week celebration. We kindly request all students from various cultural backgrounds to take part in the entrance procession with the flags from their cultural backgrounds. The St. Joseph Children s Choir will provide the liturgical selections. Please join us for this noteworthy tradition. Following Mass, students, faculty, and staff will host an Open House from 11am - 1pm showcasing our students work. This year s theme is The Winter Olympics. There will be food and entertainment. Wednesday, January 31, 5-7 p.m. - The St. Joseph Home and School Association will host its Annual Spaghetti Dinner. The dinner is prepared by the Knights of Columbus and consists of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Cost is still only $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets are available in advance at the school. A second Open House will also take place from 6-8 p.m. showcasing our students work. CHOIR CONCERT Although the Christmas season has liturgically ended with the Baptism of the Lord, its significance and beauty, especially the melodies of the Christmas carols, are still ringing in our hearts. In many countries, the singing of Christmas carols is traditionally extended to February 2, the Presentation of our Lord. Across the world various concerts are organized before and after Christmas due to great popularity and anticipation of this unique Holy Day of the year. St. Joseph Basilica will be the host for the state of Massachusetts leading New England choirs on Sunday, January 21, at 2:30 p.m. The choirs from Our Lady of Czestochowa parishes of Worcester and Boston will be present as well as the St. John the Baptist Choir from Salem MA along with our parish choir. They will present a variety of the most popular Christmas carols in a very distinguished manner. I would like to believe that the parishioners of St. Joseph Basilica love and appreciate good music and will instinctively be drawn to this event. Please come and invite your friends to join us for this beautiful performance which helps to extend the spirit of Christmas There is no charge to attend this wonderful concert. WORDS OF GRATITUDE During the week of Epiphany, January 7, we recognize our volunteers who serve in various ministries and committees for the parish throughout the year. There are countless individuals who take personal responsibility to reach out in various ways and forms to others to ensure our parish fulfills its mission for which it was established. Saint Joseph Basilica 5 ATTRIBUTES OF A CATHOLIC EDUCATION Catholic School Week provides an opportunity to look closely at the meaning of a Catholic education and its impact upon our society. The most important features of Catholic education are its faith-based emphasis in challenging the mind and forming the soul. Faculty and administration are mindful that they are forming future citizens of integrity and service to our Country. Faith-based schools view art and science within the context of infinite horizons which helps the students to notice the Big Picture. Faith-based schools address the material and spiritual components of every student which enables them to make the right choices in life. In such schools there is a collaborative effort between school administration, faculty, and parents. In Catholic schools the parents have a right and obligation to be involved in the education of their children. These few components play an important role in the background of secularism and libertarianism which is widespread in our Country. When parents are considering the best education for their children, they should reflect on these important attributes of education for their offspring. (To be continued...) NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA Tradycyjnie każda środa w naszej parafii jest dedykowana św. Józefowi. O godz. 19:00 gromadzimy się na Mszę św. wotywną, połączoną z Nowenną do św. Józefa. Na całym świecie św. Józef jest czczony, jako wielki patron w codziennych potrzebach. Zbliżajmy się zatem i my do Niego z wiarą i zaufaniem w skuteczność Jego wstawiennictwa. W procesji z figurą św. Prawdziwym znaczeniem Bożego Narodzenia jest wcielenie Syna Bożego w ludzkim ciele, które daje nam możliwość spojrzenia głębiej w nasze życie i wejrzenia poza szaleństwo tego świata i zastanowienia się, czy istnieje coś lepszego i bardziej stabilnego, aby zaplanować nasze życie. W celebracji Bożego Narodzenia Jezus przyszedł do ludzi, aby objawić się każdemu z nas. W dniu swego chrztu, który był obchodzony w poniedziałek, 8 stycznia, rozszerzył zaproszenie, aby stawać ć się częścią rodziny Bożej i przybranymi dzieci Ojca Odwiecznego. Ta prawda jest bardzo zachęcająca i pocieszająca dla wszystkich tych, którzy przez sakrament chrztu są już częścią Bożej rodziny. Dla tych, którzy nie są ochrzczeni lub z dala od Kościoła Katolickiego, jest to otwarte zaproszenie do szukania Pana, gdy można go znaleźć i do wzywania Go, gdy jest blisko. W prostej ceremonii, gdy kapłan polewa święconą wodę na osobę, Bóg dokonuje cudu, a człowiek staje się dzieckiem Bożym dzięki mocy Ducha Świętego. Bazylika św. W polskiej tradycji śpiew świątecznych kolęd tradycyjnie sięga 2 lutego, do święta Ofiarowania Pańskiego. Na całym świecie organizowane są różne koncerty przed i po świętach Bożego Narodzenia, ze względu na dużą popularność i antycypację tego wyjątkowego świętego czasu w roku. Bazylika św. Józefa będzie gospodarzem wiodących chórów z Nowej Anglii w niedzielę, 21 stycznia o godz. 14:30. Obecne będą chóry z parafii Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej w Worcester i Bostonie, a także chór św. Jana Chrzciciela z Salem wraz z naszym chórem parafialnym. Przedstawią one najbardziej popularne kolędy w różnorodnych aranżacjach. Przyjdź i zaproś swoich przyjaciół, aby dołączyli do nas w czasie tego wspaniałego wydarzenia, dzięki któremu jeszcze raz poczujemy ducha Bożego Narodzenia. Ta data zbiega się z obchodami Narodowego Tygodnia Migracji. Uprzejmie prosimy wszystkich uczniów z różnych środowisk kulturowych, aby wzięli udział w procesji na wejście z flagami swoich ojczystych krajów i w tradycyjnych strojach. Po Mszy św. uczniowie, nauczyciele i pracownicy organizują Dzień Otwartych Drzwi od 11:00 do 13:00, prezentując pracę naszych uczniów na temat: Igrzyska Olimpijskie. Na uczestników będzię również czekać poczęstunek i różne atrakcje. W środę, 31 stycznia, od 17:00 do 19:00 - HSA będzie gospodarzem dorocznej kolacji Spaghetti. Kolacja jest przygotowywana przez Rycerzy Kolumba i składa się ze spaghetti i klopsików, sałatki, pieczywa czosnkowego i deseru. Koszt wynosi tylko $5 dla dorosłych i $3 dla dzieci. Bilety są dostępne w szkole. SŁOWA WDZIĘCZNOŚCI Tuż po zakończeniu starego roku pragniemy zwrócić się ze słowami uznania do naszych wolontariuszy, którzy przez cały rok służą w różnych grupach parafialnych. Istnieje niezliczona liczba osób, które podejmują wyzwanie, aby na różne sposoby dotrzeć do innych, aby nasza parafia spełniała swoją misję, dla której została ustanowiona.
