Are you good at making people feel welcome? When you meet someone new, a new neighbor, a new work colleague, a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple hello and a smile goes a long way. SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 27, 2014 Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. -John 20:29b BELIEVING New birth, new life, good news! These themes run throughout today s scripture readings. The first reading from the Act of the Apostles describes the joyful early days of the newly born church, when members devoted themselves to instruction, the communal life, the breaking of bread and the prayers. The passage from Peter s first letter echoes that joy and assures those who now believe though they never saw Jesus that their faith will lead to their salvation. But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us to sober reality. Not everyone can believe so easily. Even the apostle Thomas doubted this astonishing news of the Resurrection. Across the centuries, Jesus reaches forward to touch us today: Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. Next weekend s second collection is for Diocesan Obligations. THANK YOU I want to express my deep gratitude for your generosity on behalf of St. Joseph School in the Excellence for Education Collection. It was a significant increase over last years gifts and it is a true sign that the community of St. Joseph s considers our school a vital mission to our parish. POPE SAINT JOHN XXIII & POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II On Sunday, April 27th the eyes of the world will be focused on St. Peter Square where Pope Francis will canonize John Paul II and John XXIII. It is the first time in the history of the Church that two Popes whose lives were divided only by a few decades and who knew each other, will be canonized at the same time. These two Saints carry a powerful message to our generation. They share our aspirations, they are aware of our problems and pointed out that only living through the Gospel message our society could become a family of brothers and sisters. I will have the privilege of witnessing history and seek their intercession in our parish and school life.

EASTER REFLECTIONS Easter Sunday, once again brought a large number of people to our Basilica even those who do not worship on a regular basis felt the need to be in church on Easter Sunday. Needless to say, the decorations, the quality of the music, the choirs, and the large number of altar servers contributed to the spiritual dimension of this unique Sunday. Our Basilica choirs under the direction of Robert Wojcik, added so much meaning to the liturgy. The Children s choir at 9:30am mass received a standing ovation and made this celebration very solemn and inspiring. It is encouraging that people from various towns are celebrating with us at our Basilica. It was through a team effort of dedicated volunteers that the interior environment of our Basilica was transformed to enhance the reflections of Lent and the joyous celebration of Easter. Sincere appreciation is extended to Altar Guild members under the direction of Fred and Sylvia Kitka, assisted by Father Gregory and Eugene Rudnicki and: Pat Parslow, Gen Lariviere, Dot Kasierski, Betty Sabaj, Janet Kitka-Gentili, George Baldowski, Jim Canty, Peter Kusek, John and Jane Gogolinski, John and Lynn Marsh, Joe and Sue Werbecki, Norman Czyzewski, and Joe Ziak. ANOINTING SERVICE/ DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY/ RELIC OF SAINT JOHN PAUL II This Sunday, April 27th, which is Divine Mercy Sunday, at 2:00pm the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered in our Basilica. You are encouraged to bring your loved ones for this special service which will be followed by the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy. Traditionally, the Sacred Heart Society members have been available to assist with the elderly, wheelchairs, etc. in the church, Divine Mercy Sunday was established to remind us that anyone who flees to God, even the biggest sinner, receives forgiveness of sins and returns to unity with God and the Church. We will have veneration of the relic of Saint John Paul II after mass on Sat., at 4:00pm and all Masses on Sunday. After 4:00pm, 9:30 & 11:00am masses there will be a special presentation about the canonization of Pope John Paul II. NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH Please join us together with members of the Sacred Heart Society for the Novena and Devotion to our Patron, St. Joseph on Wednesday, April 30th at 7:00pm. There are no words spoken by St. Joseph recorded in the Gospels. But in the words of Saint John Paul II, the silence of Joseph has its own special eloquence, for thanks to that silence we can understand the truth of the Gospel s judgment that he was a just man. Fathers play a critical role in the stability of families and Jesus earthly father, Joseph, was no exception. May family life experience an authentic renewal as we meet our own challenges through the intercession of St. Joseph. FIRST FRIDAY CELEBRATION The First Friday devotional practices have a long history in the Catholic Church. The day is associated with an increased number of Eucharistic celebrations, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and prayers throughout the day. We ask our parishioners to join the Sacred Heart Society on Friday, May 2nd to participate in the 6:30 & 7:00am masses followed by adoration throughout the day concluding at 3:00pm with the Chaplet to the Divine Mercy and benediction. Adorers are requested to attend at their scheduled time. A mass will be celebrated at 7:00pm in the Polish language. HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION The HSA is sponsoring a Bag2School Drive. Please place into large bags any unwanted clothing-hats, belts purses, footwear (tied in pairs) stuffed toys, drapes and linens. Return times only: Monday-Friday during student drop offs until 8:00am and Saturday, May 3rd from 9-11:00am REMINDER SAVE THE DATE-for the St. Joseph School Auction on Saturday, May 17th at the PACC from 6-11:00pm. Tickets are $20 pp or $35 per couple. Cocktails at 6pm, dinner served buffet style at 6:30 and live bidding at 8pm. Donations of items for the Theme Baskets, services or monetary gifts are accepted. JOSEPH SCHOOL ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We are proud to recognize the project of our Fourth Grade Students which was noted in a recent issue of the Catholic Free Press. Under the direction of Sr. Jeanne Marie they combined religion and art to produce Crowns of Thorns -an Easter Lesson. The class mixed, formed, baked, painted and stuck toothpicks into the crowns. For their every good deed they removed a toothpick to ease Jesus suffering. They presented the Crowns of Thorns at Mass on March 30 during the offertory procession. We applaud and congratulate: Lily Abbott, Izabella Bezak, Seth Boudreau, Jacob Boynton, Benjamin Colebourn, Hayden Dery, Benjamin Duval, Elzbieta Gronek, Szymon Mamro, Mackenna Parker, Antonia and Riley Peters, Sebastian Podgorny and Juliana Zalewski member of this awesome class on a project well done! Accreditation Process every ten years leading schools are supposed to receive a certificate of accreditation from the National Educational Association of Schools and Colleges. Preparation for this event takes up to one year where a school very critically assesses itself under the direction of a local committee (Karen Lefebvre and Mary Ann Weaver). Members of the accreditation committee spent many days at our school, obviously under our expense, to study and investigate our educational effectiveness, and formational process. We are indebted to our administration and faculty for their dedication and concern to create a rewarding experience for our students at Saint Joseph School. JOSEPH BASILICA 41ST FESTIVAL On June & 15th, we will celebrate our Annual June Event featuring Polish & American Food, Money Raffle, Special Gifts, Musical Entertainment, Games of Chance and much, much more. Please make your money raffle returns before May 1st to take advantage of the Early Bird Special for a 2-day stay in Hyannis. Next Festival Meeting is at the rectory, on Wednesday, May 7th at 6:00pm. We ask parishioners, chair persons and parents of our school children to join us in planning this special event. We need your help and creativity to make this the best festival ever. Country Store booth is requesting donations of canned goods/ staples, cleaning supplies, etc. to be placed in baskets at the entrances to the Basilica. Thank you for your thoughtful generosity. Szczęśliwi ci, którzy zmagając się ze swoją słabością, niewiarą, nieufnością wobec Boga, zdecydowali się bardziej zaufać Jego słowu niż własnym wątpliwościom. Szczęśliwi ci, którzy nie zadowolili się opowiadaniem innych i zapragnęli spotkać Go osobiście. Panie, spraw, by słowo Twojego miłosierdzia było mocniejsze niż nasze ciemności, niż nasza obojętność. VISIT OF CARDINAL DZIWISZ On Tuesday, May 20th Cardinal Dziwisz will be visiting St. Joseph School and St. Joseph Parish. We will have a Luncheon meeting at Point Breeze Restaurant with tickets at $500 per person. Proceeds will benefit his Be Not Afraid Center in Krakow, built in memory of Saint John Paul II. Mass will be celebrated at 6:00pm followed by a reception at PACC on Harris Street. The church is open to the general public and tickets for the buffet dinner are $30 per person. Wszystkich, którzy chcą przyłączyć się do wspólnej modlitwy i przyjąć sakrament uzdrowienia, zapraszamy na godzinę 14:00. KANONIZACJA W dniu dzisiejszym przezywamy wspaniałą uroczystość kanonizacji dwóch papieży: Jana Pawła II i Jana XXIII. W związku z tymi obchodami po wszystkich Mszach św. W ten weekend będziemy adorowali relikwie św. Jana Pawła II. Ponadto po Mszach św. O godz.: 16:00 w sobotę oraz 9:30 i 11:00 w niedzielę zapraszamy na specjalne prezentacje o życiu i nauczaniu Jana Pawła II. PODZIĘKOWANIE Wyrażamy serdecznie podziękowanie wszystkim, którzy zaangażowali się w organizację i przebieg uroczystości Świąt Wielkiej Nocy. Wasze prace modlitwy i wsparcie są bardzo ważne dla całej wspólnoty parafialnej. Niech Wam Bóg błogosławi. Dziękujemy również za wszelkie życznia i przejawy życzliwości składane z okazji Świąt. WIELKANOCNA REFLEKSJA Niedziela Wielkanocna jest celebracją odnowy życia całego rodzaju ludzkiego poprzez Zmartwychwstanie Jezusa. Dzień ten motywuje wielu ludzi, również tych, którzy nie praktykują regularnie swej Wiary, aby przyjść do świątyni. Po raz kolejny również w naszej Bazylice gościliśmy wielu wiernych na wszystkich świątecznych Mszach. Nie trzeba wspominać, że religijne przeżycia dopełniała i pogłębiała przepiękna dekoracja i wspaniała muzyka w wykonaniu naszego organisty i chóry. Dzięki wysiłkom i poświęceniu wolontariuszy zarówno wnętrze jak i otoczenie naszej świątyni wspaniale odzwierciedlało atmosferę Świąt. Nie zebraliśmy jeszcze kwoty, o którą poprosiła nas Diecezja, dlatego ciągle zwracamy się z ogromna prośbą do tych, którzy jeszcze nie przyłączyli się do tego corocznego dzieła miłosierdzia by rozważyli możliwość wsparcia swoimi datkami potrzebujących w naszej diecezji. PIERWSZY PIĄTEK W tym tygodniu będziemy obchodzili pierwszy piątek miesiąca maja. Msze święte i adoracje według ustalonego porządku. Wieczorem Msza św. po polsku o godz. 19:00. Pół godziny przed Mszą św. możliwość spowiedzi. PIERWSZA KOMUNIA ŚWIĘTA W najbliższą niedzielę będziemy przeżywali, wraz z dziećmi klas drugich, wspaniałą uroczystość Pierwszej Komunii św. FESTIWAL Tegoroczny festiwal będziemy obchodzili w dniach od 13 do 15 czerwca. Jak co roku oferujemy wiele wspaniałych atrakcji włączając m.in. doskonałe dania kuchni polskiej i amerykańskiej, loterię pieniężną, dobra muzykę oraz gry i zabawy dla najmłodszych. Zenon Grocholewski i kard. Stanisław Ryłko. Już pół godziny po rozpoczęciu konsystorza papież Franciszek ogłosił, że 27 kwietnia na ołtarze zostaną wyniesieni papież Jan Paweł II i papież Jan XXIII. Zwraca się uwagę na to, że świętymi ogłoszeni zostaną dwaj wielcy papieże XX wieku. W obu przypadkach ich procesom kanonizacyjnym towarzyszyły wyjątkowe okoliczności. Jan Paweł II, ogłoszony błogosławionym w 2011 r., zostanie kanonizowany w rekordowo krótkim czasie, dziewięć lat po śmierci. Jan XXIII, mimo że krótko sprawował swój pontyfikat, powołał do życia zdarzenie epokowe: Sobór Watykański II. Sobór był i nadal jest powiewem świeżości nie tylko w Kościele, ale i na świecie. Jan Paweł II był ważną częścią tego Soboru. Papież Franciszek, zestawiając tych dwóch papieży i wynosząc ich razem na ołtarze, daje nam znak, że chce, by Kościół podążał z duchem soboru. To wyjątkowe, bo Franciszek stawia Kościół w perspektywie ważnego, może trochę zapomnianego zdarzenia, którym był Sobór. Chrześcijaństwo nie polega na wykrzykiwaniu, ale na miłosiernym odniesieniu się do drugiego człowieka. Zarówno Jan XXIII jak i Jan Paweł II chcieli tego samego: chcieli miłosierdzia, stąd też i sama data ma duże, symboliczne znaczenie. Papież Franciszek od samego początku dyskusji o kanonizacji chciał, by obaj papieże: Jan XXIII i Jan Paweł II byli kanonizowani w tym samym czasie. Zarówno Jan Paweł II, jak i Jan XXIII byli wielkimi papieżami. Obaj zabiegali o pokój o dobro na świecie.
