2 List Księdza Proboszcza /Pastor`s Letter Kochani nasi parafianie i goście, Nie bądźcie przygnębieni, gdyż radość w Panu jest waszą ostoją czytamy dziś w pierwszym czytaniu z księgi Nehemiasza. Prorok zachęca nas do radości w Panu, to znaczy do radości z dzieł Bożych. Aby się ucieszyć z dzieł Bożych, trzeba je najpierw zauważyć. Wiele dobra się wydarzyło w okresie świątecznym w naszej parafii, które trzeba nam, jako wspólnocie zauważyć i za nie Bogu i sobie nawzajem podziękować: Mikołajkowy bal dla dzieci, kiermasz świąteczny, orszak Trzech Króli, opłatek Koła Żywego Różańca, opłatek parafialny, opłatek dla rad parafialnych i osób zaangażowanych w życie parafii. Te wszystkie wydarzenia odbyły się dzięki zaangażowaniu wielu osób z rady parafialnej, oraz działających przy naszej parafii grup. Dzięki wam kochani, parafia żyje i jest widoczna także na zewnątrz, w środowisku Polonijnym. Szczególne podziękowania pragną złożyć Klubowi Polskiemu za niezwykłą pracowitość i troskę o naszą parafię. Bardzo wiele pracy i poświęcenia włożyłyście drogie panie w przygotowanie posiłku dla kilkuset osób biorących udział w corocznym orszaku Trzech Króli. Uczestnicy orszaku, na czele z ks. Biskupem byli wdzięczni za miłe przyjęcie i serdeczną atmosferę. W sposób szczególny dziękuję za przygotowanie ubiegłoniedzielnego, parafialnego opłatka. Ilość uczestników przerosła nasze najśmielsze oczekiwania. Dziękuję wszystkim za obecność i miłą atmosferę tamtego wieczoru. Bogu niech będą dzięki za wszelkie dobro! Dzięki indywidualnym darczyńcom oraz takim inicjatywom jak kiermasz świąteczny, orszak Trzech Króli oraz sprzedaż opłatków wigilijnych, udało nam się zebrać i przekazać na wsparcie misji w Afryce prawie 11 tys. dolarów. To pokazuje, jak bardzo hojne mamy serca dla ubogich i potrafimy się dzielić z potrzebującymi. W przyszłą niedzielę we wszystkich kościołach w archidiecezji Chicago odbędzie się doroczna kwesta Katolicka pod hasłem Ręce Boga Miłosierdzia. Proszę was o to, byśmy całym sercem włączyli się w tą inicjatywę. Dziękuję tym, którzy już złożyli dary pieniężne, oraz tym, którzy jeszcze je złożą. Wasze ofiary wspierają istnienie wielu dobrych dzieł w archidiecezji, które mogą istnieć i okazywać Boże Miłosierdzie potrzebującym. W tym roku, w naszej parafii mamy do zebrania $ W ostatnich latach odpowiedź parafian była hojna i budująca. Bardzo was proszę o hojną odpowiedź także w tym roku. Marek Dear parishioners and guests, "Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" - says today's first reading from the book of Nehemiah. The Prophet invites us to rejoice in the Lord, that is, to take joy in God's works. To take joy in the works of God, you must first notice them. A lot of good has happened in the holiday season in our parish that as a community we need to notice and thank God and each other for them: Santa Claus ball for children, Christmas market, the procession of the Magi, the Christmas Party of the rosary group, the Parish Christmas party and the Christmas party for the Parish Pastoral Council as well as people involved in parish life. All these events took place thanks to the commitment of many people from the parish council and parish groups. Thanks to you, the parish is alive and vibrant. I want to dedicate a special thanks to the Polish Club for their extraordinary diligence and concern for our parish. A great deal of work was dedicated by the ladies in preparing a meal for hundreds of people taking part in the annual procession of the Three Kings. The participants of the procession, led by the Bishop were grateful for the warm welcome and cordial atmosphere. In particular, thank you for preparing last s parish Christmas wafer party. Beautiful and generous response from the parishioners fills your heart with gratitude and gives hope for the future. Thank you all for your presence and a pleasant atmosphere that night. Thanks be to God for all the good! Thanks to individual donors and initiatives such as the Christmas market, the procession of the Magi and sale of wafers of Christmas Eve, we were able to nearly collect $11,000 to support missions in Africa. It shows how we have a very generous heart for the poor and we are able to share with those in need. Next all churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago will hold the Annual Catholic Appeal under the slogan "The Hands of God of Mercy." I ask that you wholeheartedly join in this initiative. I thank those who have made donations, and those who have yet to submit them. Your sacrifices support the existence of the many good works of the Archdiocese and show God's mercy to the needy. This year, our parish goal is to collect $ 17,518. In recent years, the response has been generous and constructive. I am very hopeful for a generous response again this year. One of the indicators of the vitality of the parish is its ability to meet the obligations imposed on it. I ask that you also pray for this year's Annual Catholic Appeal. Slow forgiveness is little better than no forgiveness. --Sir Arthur Pinero TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Roman Catholics, our marriage practices have their pedigree in ancient Rome. One of the major players in shaping our practices was the warfare involved in building an empire. Soldiers vanished and sometimes never returned. Women began to manage their lives and to make decisions. The old family values were replaced by patriotic ones, and religion was more attuned to the gore and glory of battle, a religion of the state, not of the family. Weddings were still family celebrations, but had a public face. The bride wore a white toga and a red veil and walked to her new home. There, she and her husband joined their right hands and gave consent to each other, not relying on her father to give consent for her. Religion was optional: a pagan priest might be invited or not, and even without the ceremony, society agreed by common law that a year of living together equaled marriage consent. By the same token, marriage by consent also meant divorce was on the same legal footing, and did not require the courts or civil declarations. This is the world-view the first Christians inherited, and it was up to them to determine what was good and to hold marriage up to the light of the gospel. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Third in Ordinary Time When he announced this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis highlighted today's Gospel episode, in which Jesus proclaims in his hometown synagogue his Spirit-anointed mission to fulfill the promises of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus' mission then, says Pope Francis, is our mission now as Jesus' disciples this Jubilee Year of Mercy: to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, a year of God's mercy. Pope Francis challenges us to translate Jesus' mission to contemporary needs: to console by word and deed those materially or spiritually poor, to liberate those bound by modern society's new forms of slavery, to open the eyes of those blinded by their own self-interest, and to restore human dignity to all those from whom it has been stolen. 5 OUR Our FAITH Faith EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The eyes of all look to you, Lord, and you give them their food in due season. Come visit Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration takes place in our parish every Tuesday beginning after the 8:15 a.m. English Mass. Benediction is at 6:45 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. Mass in Polish. LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul's best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul's other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. We can likewise know the joys and sorrows of the other members of the Body and share in them for the strengthening of the whole Body of Christ. We've really gotten to spend some "quality time" with the apostle Paul this week and last. Spending quality time with these images during Mass is fine; living these images in quality time for others is their true message. BEGINNING AGAIN The Gospels of Matthew and Luke can be said to have two beginnings. Like Mark's Gospel, they have dramatic accounts of the baptism of the Lord. These accounts inaugurate the public mission of Jesus. Matthew and Luke, however, prefaced this beginning of their Gospels with the accounts of Jesus' infancy. We can note what a careful craftsman Luke is, for a key phrase in both beginnings of his Gospel is "glad tidings." On Christmas Eve, we heard the angel proclaim the "glad tidings" of the birth of Jesus; today we hear Jesus himself proclaim glad tidings for the poor, the captive, the blind, and the oppressed. We likewise hear him proclaim that the coming time of his ministry will be a year acceptable to the Lord, what we today would call a year of jubilee. And here we look for a model for our own vocations. BEGINNING A VOCATION FOR LIFE Luke intentionally depicts Jesus so that he will remind people of Ezra, standing tall and proud, opening the scroll to proclaim the word of God. Ezra did so as the people of Israel began a new era in their lives: the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the temple after their long exile in Babylon. Jesus was doing so at the beginning of a new era for all people. Today's Gospel passage sounds like a beginning--and so it is--but a quick glance at which passages we have heard will show us that three chapters of the Gospel have been passed over. Today we hear Jesus announcing the most important beginning of his public ministry: the inbreaking of the healing and forgiveness that the Spirit has anointed him to bring. Our own vocation in Christ must always begin like this: we do not work merely to build a nation or an earthly kingdom, but to build the reign of God. ELUSIVE HAPPINESS Happiness will never be ours if we do not recognize to some degree that God's blessings were given us for the wellbeing of all.
