Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is to make holy, from the words sacer = sacred and facere = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God. TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME September 20, 2015 The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. - James 3:18 TIS THE GIFT TO BE SIMPLE The Shaker hymn describes a circular journey from innocence to innocence with characteristic brevity: This the gift to be simple, tis the gift to be free. Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be. This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, positions of honor, money and power are not requirements of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today s Gospel that members of God s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus time, as it does in ours. The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of unnecessary, unimportant, false and burdensome attachments that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart. This week s second collection is for our parish CCD program. The second collection next weekend is designated for the Annual Catholic Schools Appeal. Annual Catholic School Appeal Collection is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 26 & 27th. Across the country, Catholic Education is finally on the rise. Young people need enduring values to form their mind and heart. Here at St. Joseph s we want to keep tuition as low as possible so no one could be denied a Catholic Education. Nevertheless, expenses are mounting so rely on your generosity and support. This collection is taken in all parishes in the Diocese of Worcester. Your September packet includes a special envelope for this purpose. The children of SJS will take up the collection. 3 Page 3 POPE FRANCIS VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES The Church of the United States this week will be graced by the visit of the successor of Peter, Pope Francis. He will celebrate an outdoor Mass in Washington, DC on Wednesday, September 23rd and will canonize Fr. Juniper Serra. He will also address Congress, speak at the United Nations in New York City and participate in the World Wide Congress of Families in Philadelphia during his visit. His arrival is greatly anticipated not only by Catholics and very much warranted. The American society is facing degradation of the dignity of the human being, crisis of family life and misguided understanding of the meaning and purpose of life. Some people believe that you could satisfy the longing of the human heart through entertainment, money, and an easy life. This road does not lead to true happiness and personal fulfillment. Many young people are searching for new values, new sources of hope in places where they cannot be found. Obvious distrust toward the Church, rejection of gospel values, which defines human existence, needs to be clarified and emphasized. Therefore, the Pope s visit gives us the opportunity to invite the Holy Spirit to change the spiritual landscape of our nation. May I ask all parishioners to make next week a time of prayer, fasting and alms giving for the safety and success of the visit of the Supreme Pastor of the Church. ST. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF ST. JOSEPH The cult of St. Joseph is thriving in the Universal Church almost from the beginning of Christianity. All Catholics instinctively turn to St. Joseph as the most influential Saint who is close to individuals of various walks of life. Every country has a number of shrines, chapels, churches, monasteries, etc. dedicated to St. Joseph. Each one of them has a particular almost miraculous history. One of the Shrines we visited in Poland was in the city of Kalisz. In that city the cult of St. Joseph dates back to ancient times. Prince Mieszko III built the church in In the 14th Century the church was partially burned and rebuilt by Bishop Bogoria Skotnicki. In 1670 after some additions and transformations, the mural of the Holy Family was placed in the church. The history of the mural of St. Joseph is very intriguing. A well known resident in the village of Kalisz named Stobienia was very sick. In his final days when he was in great agony of pain he prayed to St. Joseph for a happy death. According to chronicles of this church he was visited by an elderly man in whom Mr. Stobienia recognized as St. Joseph. He told him that he will be cured and live if he would paint a mural of the Holy Family to be placed in the local church. He ordered someone to paint the mural and while he venerated the mural he was cured. The mural of the Holy Family has been in that church since 1670 and thousands of people have made pilgrimages to that shrine and many miracles have been recorded in a special book which the church maintains. There were many expensive gifts given by kings and emperors in the spirit of gratitude. Our pilgrimage, last year, had the privilege to pray in the Chapel of the Holy Family and present our petitions to St. Joseph. It is interesting to note that Prince Mieszko and others along the years who built, rebuilt and supported the church had no idea that some day this church would become a National Shrine to St. Joseph. Whatever we do in our life, we cannot predict how God will use it for our good. Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph - Every Wednesday, evening at 7:00pm we at our Basilica invite you, your family and friends to a Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph. Petition slips are available in the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa for you to write your intentions to be read out loud or silently during our Novena. We all need assistance and favors of our Patron and Wed., Sept 23rd offers us the opportunity to present our requests. Our parish Eucharistic Ministers will carry our Patron s statue into the sanctuary. Padre Pio - we will observe the 47th anniversary of the passing of this famous stigmatic on September 23rd. His mural is depicted on the ceiling of our Basilica. Many parishioners have special devotion to Padre Pio. Therefore, I encourage parishioners to participate at 7:00pm Mass in conjunction with the Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph. Hospitality Committee - will meet on Monday, September 21st at 7:00pm at the rectory. All members are asked to attend and we also welcome parishioners who are interested in joining this active group. 5 Page 5 KRONIKA PARAFIALNA DWUDZIESTA PIĄTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 20 września 2015 Owoc zaś sprawiedliwości sieją w pokoju ci, którzy zaprowadzają pokój. (Jk 3, 18) Kiedy Chrystus mówi Apostołom o czekającej Go męce, oni spierają się, który z nich jest ważniejszy. Pycha czyni z człowieka istotę bardzo słabą, egocentryczną, szukającą wygody, uciekającą od trudu i cierpienia. Jezus uczy, że prawdziwa wielkość człowieka polega na służbie, na oddaniu siebie Bogu. Aby otrzymać tę mądrość zstępującą z góry, trzeba trwać na modlitwie i stać się jak dziecko, które bezgranicznie ufa Ojcu. Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na program katechetyczny w naszej parafii. Druga kolekta w przyszła niedzielę będzie przeznaczona na Annual Catholic School Appeal. ANNUAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL APPEAL Zbiórka na Annual Catholic School Appeal jest przejawem troski o młodych ludzi, którzy potrzebują formacji serc i umysłów w swietle prawd ewangelicznych. W naszej szkole staramy sie utrzymywać czesne na jak najniższym poziomie, tak by żadne dziecko nie było pozbawione możliwosci ksztalcenia sie w katolickiej szkole. Potrzebujemy jednak wsparcia z zewnątrz, gdzyż koszty utrzymania i prowadzenia szkoły ciągle rosną. W dniu dzisiejszym w całej diecezji są zbierane ofiary na wsparcie edukacji katolickiej. Bóg zapłać za wsparcie naszej szkoły i kształcących się w niej dzieci. WIZYTA PAPIEŻA W USA Kościół w stanach Zjednoczonych będzie cieszyć się wizytą Papieża Franciszka. W programie papieskiej wizyty jest uroczysta Msza św. w Waszyngtonie, spotkanie z Kongresem i przedstawicielami ONZ, a także uczestnictwo w Światowym Kongresie Rodzin w Filadelfii. Papieska pielgrzymka jest bardzo oczekiwana nie tylko przez Katolików. Społeczność amerykańska zmaga się obecnie z degradacją godności osoby ludzkiej, kryzysem wartości rodzinnych oraz z niezrozumieniem znaczenia i wartości ludzkiego życia. Niektórzy ludzie uważają, że można zaspokoić pragnienia ludzkiego serca za pomocą przyjemności, pieniędzy oraz łatwego życia. Ta droga nie prowadzi jednak do prawdziwego szczęścia i osobistego spełnienia. Wielu młodych ludzi poszukuje nowych wartości, nowych źródeł nadziei w miejscach gdzie nie mogą ich znaleźć. Ich zagubienie niejednokrotnie wynika z braku zaufania wobec Kościoła i odrzucenia wartości ewangelicznych, które definiują ludzkie istnienie. Papieska wizyta daje nam wspaniała możliwość do otwarcie się na Ducha Świętego i podkreślenie oraz zrozumienie tych wartości w naszym życiu. Prosimy wszystkich parafian o to, by najbliższy tydzień uczynili szczególnym czasem modlitwy, postu i jałmużny w intencji bezpiecznej i owocnej pielgrzymki papieskiej. ST. Zainteresowanych prosimy o kontakt z Sylwią Kohut: ŚW. JÓZEF Kult św. Józefa jest doskonale znany w całym Kościele Powszechnym niemalże od samych jego początków. Wszyscy Katolicy instynktownie traktują św. Józefa jako najbardziej wpływowego ze wszystkich świętych i najbliższego wielu ludziom na różnorodnych ścieżkach życia. W każdym kraju znajduje się wiele sanktuariów, kościołów i kaplic dedykowanych św. Józefowi. Każde z tych miejsc ma swoją szczególną, niekiedy cudowną historię. W Polsce największe i najbardziej znane sanktuarium św. Józefa znajduje się w Kaliszu, gdzie kult św. Józefa sięga bardzo odległych czasów. W roku 1115 książę Mieszko III wybudował tam kościół, który w czternastym wieku częściowo spłonął, po czym został odbudowany przez biskupa Bogdana Skotnickiego. W 1670 roku wewnątrz kościoła został namalowany obraz naścienny, którego historia jest zapisana w kronice parafialnej. Zapis ten mówi, że pewien mieszkaniec Kalisza o nazwisku Stobienia był ciężko chory. W bolesnym cierpieniu modlił się do św. Józefa o szczęśliwą śmierć. Pewnego razu odwiedził go starszy człowiek, w którym rozpoznał św. Józefa. Człowiek ów powiedział mu, że wyzdrowieje i będzie żył, jeśli namaluje wizerunek św. Rodziny w miejscowym kościele. Po namalowaniu obrazu Stobienia został uzdrowiony w trakcie modlitwy przed obrazem. Będąc w pielgrzymce do Polski mieliśmy okazję modlić się w kaplicy św. Rodziny przed legendarnym obrazem i zanosić nasze prośby do Boga przez wstawiennictwo św. Józefa. Warto zaznaczyć jeszcze jeden fakt: ani książę Mieszko, ani wszyscy inny, którzy odbudowywali i przebudowywali ten kościół, nie mieli pojęcia, że któregoś dnia stanie się on narodowym sanktuarium. NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA Każdej środy, o godz. 19:00 gromadzimy się w naszej Bazylice wraz z przyjaciółmi i rodziną na Nowennie do św. Józefa.
