(773) Fax (773) Treasures From Our Tradition Today s Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an of icial tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by Molakai mule. 3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. Czasami zdarza się te praktyki lekceważyć, traktować jako opcje do wyboru, z których można, ale nie trzeba skorzystać. Tak naprawdę są one jednak esencją i fundamentem chrześcijańskiego życia. 5 Ash Wednesday Announcement This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will begiven. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful re lection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the signi icance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community.
