All parts of the table with which the user comes into contact during intended use, shall be designed so that physical injury and damage are avoided. This requirement is met when: a) edges of table tops which are directly in contact with the user are rounded or chamfered; b) all other edges accessible during intended use are free from burrs and/or sharp edges; c) ends of hollow components with a diameter greater than 7 mm and less than 12 mm where the accessible depth is greater than 10 mm, are closed or capped. Movable and adjustable parts shall be designed so that injuries and inadvertent operation are avoided. It shall not be possible for any load bearing part of the table to come loose unintentionally. All parts which are lubricated to assist sliding shall be designed to protect users from lubricant stains when in normal use. 5.2 Shear and squeeze points 5.2.1 Shear and squeeze points when setting up and folding Unless 5.2.2 or 5.2.3 are applicable, shear and squeeze points that are created only during setting up and folding are acceptable, because the user can be assumed to be in control of his/her movements and to be able to cease applying the force immediately upon experiencing pain. The edges of parts moving relative to each other and creating shear and squeeze points shall be as specified in 5.1. Table fulfilled the general safety requirements. There existed acceptable shear and squeeze points created during setting up and folding the table. The user is able to cease applying the force immediately upon experiencing pain. 5.2.2 Shear and squeeze points under influence of powered mechanisms There shall be no shear and squeeze points created by parts of the table operated by powered mechanisms, i.e. springs, gas lifts and motorised systems. The loads used for durability tests within Table 2 are considered representative of normal use. There shall be no shear and squeeze points if a hazard is created by the user during normal movements and actions. 5.3 Stability 5.3.1 Stability under vertical load 5.3.1.1 General When assessing the stability of a table, reference shall be made to EN 1730:2012, 7.1. Tables that can be set to heights both above and below 950 mm shall be tested to both 5.3.1.2 and 5.3.1.3. There were no shear and squeeze points created by forces applied during normal use. 5.3.1.2 Test for tables that are or can be set to a height of 950 mm or less The table shall be set to the height most likely to cause overturning, but not more than 950 mm. The table shall not overturn when tested according to EN 1730:2012, 7.2.2, using the forces specified within Table 2. 5.3.1.3 Test for tables that are or can be set to a height > 950 mm The table shall be set to the height most likely to cause overturning, but not less than 950 mm. The table shall not overturn when tested according to EN 1730:2012, 7.2.3, using 50 % of the forces specified within Table 2. In accordance with the standard requirements, the force of 150 N was used. During testing the table was not overturned. Not applicable. 5.3.2 Stability for tables with extension elements Load each extension element with the load specified in Table 1. The table shall not overturn when tested according to EN 1730:2012, 7.3, using the forces specified within Table 2. Not applicable. The guidance for selecting test severity 1, 2 or 3 with due respect for the end use of the product is given in Annex B. Type 1 tables have a main surface 600 mm or more above the floor surface and a surface area greater than 0,3 m 2. It shall contain at least the following details: a) information regarding the intended use, see Annex B; b) assembly instructions, where applicable; c) instructions for the maintenance of the table, if applicable. The table was tested in accordance with the standard. The manufacturer has allocated the table for normal use (test level - 2). There were no fractures of any member, joint or component. The table kept rigidity. The table did not loose its functionality. The table fulfils the safety requirements contained in 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3. Not tested. This test does not apply to Keyboard/Laptop Tables or Benching Systems. 4.3.1 Test Setup The unit shall be placed on a level platform and leveled in its normal operating position. Any extendable elements shall be closed and unloaded. Adjustable height desk/tables shall be positioned at a height that places the desk/table in its least stable condition. 4.3.2 Test rocedure a) or tables less than or equal to 72 in. in length: lace a 305 mm (12 in.) diameter disk so that its center is 178 mm (7 in.) from the edge of the top at the least stable location. If the center of the disk is greater than 305 mm (12 in.) from a corner of the top, move the disk such that its center is 305 mm (12 in.) from a corner keeping the edges of the disk equidistant from both sides of the top. If, at least stable position, the top has a depth less than 356 mm (14 in.), center the loading disk across the depth at that position. or tables greater than 72 in. in length: lace two 305 mm (12 in.) diameter disks 36 in. apart (center-to-center) so that their centers are 178 mm (7 in.) from the edge of the top at the least stable location. If the center of a disk is greater than 305 mm (12 in.) from a corner of the top, move the disk such that its center is 305 mm (12 in.) from the corner keeping the edges of the disk equidistant from both sides of the top. If, at the least stable position, the top has a depth less than 356 mm (14 in.), center the loading disks across the depth at that position. (See igures 4b and 4c). b) lace a 57 kg (125 lb.) static load on the disk(s). c) If necessary, repeat steps (a) and (b) to verify the least stable position has been evaluated. 4.3.3 Acceptance Level The unit shall not tip over. If one of more extendible elements opens during the test and prevents the unit from tipping over due to contact with the test platform, the unit does not meet the acceptance criteria. This test applies to adjustable height tables that can be adjusted to 965 mm (38 in.) or less. The method of securing shall not affect the load application. If the unit requires support from adjacent units, all units shall be tested together as a system. Adjustable height tables shall be adjusted to their highest position but not to exceed 965 mm (38 in.) b) Apply the specified concentrated load to the primary surface per Table 1 through a 305 mm (12 in.) diameter disk so that its center is 178 mm (7 in.) from the unit s edge at its apparent weakest point. The largest two extendible elements shall be fully opened for the duration of the test. This test does not apply to: Surfaces greater than 965 mm (38 in.) in height, or height adjustable units that cannot be adjusted to 965 mm (38 in.) or below. Shelves or adjustable keyboard surfaces or keyboard tables. (If it is unclear whether the surface is a primary surface or a shelf, this test applies). Units with integral (non-detachable) overhead storage units, hutches, etc. that limit the useable depth of the primary surface to less than 406 mm (16 in.) or with designs that interfere with a person s ability to sit on the surface. If the desk/table unit is equipped with glides, extend them to their midpoint but not to exceed 13 mm (0,5 in.) from the fully retracted position. c) Raise one end of the long axis of the unloaded unit so that bottom of the base is above the test platform at the height given in Table 3 or at the balance point, whichever is lower. d) The end of the unit being tested shall be released and allowed a free fall to the test platform. e) Repeat steps (c) and (d) for the other end of the desk/table unit. f) erform the pull force test in Section 19. 7.4 Acceptance Level There shall be no loss of serviceability.
