Saint Joseph Basilica 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT - DECEMBER 17, 2017 Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you - 1 THESSALONIANS 5:16-18 ADVENT REFLECTION At the beginning of our liturgical year, and as we approach a new calendar year, we are called to be attentive for signs of God s presence. So much of our world and our lives are filled with activity, confusion, chaos, polarization, unpredictability, struggle, and disaster. We are challenged to simplify our lives - and our celebration of Christmas - so that we can focus on what s really important and help others who are suffering. In the background of the confusion and spiritual emptiness comes the Good News of Salvation where heaven is not only touching the earth but is descending to the earth and unites us with the life of a little baby in Bethlehem and next to him the Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit. She is standing on the threshold of this new life and it is the total brightness which illuminates the shadows of this dark night. The brightness of the light which woke the shepherds from their deep sleep shines on the world from our Savior, Jesus Christ. The question remains if the brightness of this mysterious night will be able to awaken our contemporary generation. It is in the joyful simplicity of a life inspired by the Gospel and the Gospel's spirit of fraternal sharing that you will find the best remedy for sour criticism, paralyzing doubt, and the temptation to make money the principle means and indeed the very measure of human advancement. To welcome the newborn Messiah into our homes and hearts requires forgiveness of our sins and inner renewal. Several priests from different parishes will be available for your convenience on Monday, December 18, from 6-8pm. Please encourage your family members, especially your children, to take advantage of this important opportunity in our parish. FAMILY MASS This Sunday, December 17, at the 9:30 Bambinelli Mass, all our school children will come to the Basilica asking for blessings of their own Infant Jesus figurines from their family crèche. Families also traditionally spend their Advent Season making small sacrifices or doing good deeds for the Child Jesus, represented by adding a piece of straw to His manger for each good deed performed. The following Sunday, December 24, we ask all children to bring their straw tokens to the sanctuary during the offertory procession to be placed in the manger. OFFICE OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Classes will be held on Monday, December 18, at 5:30pm. Grades 1 & 2: regular session. Grades 3-10 will attend confessions at church with parent pickup at 6:30pm at the church. Parents are requested to attend confessions with their children.

4 Saint Joseph Basilica This weekend s second collection is for The Retirement Fund for the Religious. Next weekend s second Christmas Day collection is for St. Joseph School Assistance. NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH On Wednesday, December 20th at 7pm we invite parishioners and friends to join us for our weekly Novena and Devotion to our Patron Saint. The Advent Season provides an excellent opportunity to join the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph as they await the birth of Christ and obtain for us needed graces. Please write your intentions legibly on the forms available and place them in the petition box and they will be read during the Novena. This week, members of the Holy Rosary Sodality will carry the statue of St. Joseph into the sanctuary. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO DECORATE OUR BASILICA! Your presence is needed and would be greatly appreciated Monday and Tuesday, December 18 & 19 at 9:00 a.m. here at our Basilica. Please assist us in presenting a most beautiful atmosphere for our celebration of Christmas. We need as many volunteers as possible. Let s make our Basilica shine! CHRISTMAS OVERVIEW The vigil of Christmas is on Sunday, December 24. Obviously everyone is obligated to fulfill their Sunday obligation by participating in one of the Sunday masses. Christmas begins when the first star appears in the sky symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem on the very first Christmas night. This is the time when we gather around our tables at home to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is the most sacred and profound occasion when we begin sharing Oplatki (Christmas wafers) with our closest family members and friends expressing our best wishes and sharing not only the meal but joy, peace, and mutual love. CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE There is a Christmas vigil mass at 4pm, Shepherd s Mass at Midnight, and at the 9:30am Family Mass the Childrens Choir will be singing. If any of the parents of the children aren t able to participate in the above masses, there will also be an 8:15am and 11am mass on Christmas Day. The most important part of Christmas Day is not the opening of gifts but the liturgy in church. We need children to participate in the processions at the 4pm, Midnight mass, and on Christmas Day at 9:30am. The Children s Choir will provide the musical selections for the 9:30 Mass. Oplatki Wafers and 2018 Calendars Both Oplatki wafers and 2018 Polish/ English calendars (calendars generously provided by Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home) are available in the sacristy. Saint Joseph Basilica 5 Christmas Pageant Reflections Last Sunday s Christmas Pageant presented by the Drama Club of St. Joseph School officially opened the Christmas season for our area. Those who attended the show were mesmerized by the true Christmas message that was presented. The show was flawless and filled with over 200 students on stage. The audience reacted many times with applause either for singing or exceptional performances by particular students. It was, indeed, well-rehearsed, beautifully delivered, and provided an inspirational message for those who attended. It is worthy to note that the show was complimented by beautiful musical selections, well-chosen costumes, and high levels of acting by the performers. All the teachers, including our principal, HSA, parents, back-stage crew, and above all, the Drama Club s chairperson, Kelly Bailey, deserve much credit for this wonderful presentation. Well done! Christmas Collection for St. Joseph School On Christmas Day our Second Collection will be for St. Joseph School Assistance and we ask for your generosity. Keeping up with the latest educational technology and services as well as assisting our teachers in their professional development is very costly. In this season of sharing and giving, we kindly ask parishioners to open their hearts and give to help educate the next generation of leaders from St. Joseph School. Children learn, acquire habits, and develop their faith through a variety of programs and extra-curricular activities here at St. Joseph School. Children of Mary Installation On Saturday, December 9th, new members of the Children of Mary were installed at the 4pm Mass. The organization led by Sister Mary Ann seeks to instill devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The young ladies attend Fatima devotions from May through October and also participate in the crowning of the Blessed Mother in the month of May. Additionally, the group is involved with our Giving Tree and assists with distribution of the gifts from our parish. They are to be commended for their faith and dedication to the Blessed Mother. TRZECIANIEDZIELA ADWENTU 17 GRUDNIA, 2017 Zawsze się radujcie, nieustannie się módlcie! W każdym położeniu dziękujcie, taka jest bowiem wola Boża w Jezusie Chrystusie względem was. (1Tes 5, 16-18) Przykład Jana Chrzciciela uczy nas, jak ważne jest to, aby znać prawdę o sobie samym. Często chcemy uchodzić za kogoś, kim nie jesteśmy. Wydaje nam się, że możemy w ten sposób coś zyskać lub najzwyczajniej poczuć się lepiej, jak ktoś ważniejszy czy piękniejszy. Nie jest to jednak droga, która może wnieść dobro w nasze życie. Nikt nie każe nam obnosić się z własnymi słabościami czy ograniczeniami. Mamy prawo do tego, aby zostały uszanowane. Jednakże przed Bogiem i sobą musimy znać prawdę o sobie samych, o tym, kim jesteśmy i w jakim miejscu naszego życia się znajdujemy. Święty Benedykt poucza mnichów w swojej Regule: Nie pragnąć, by nas nazywano świętymi, zanim nimi zostaniemy (Reguła Benedykta 4, 62). To bardzo mądra rada. Ile razy dajemy komuś wskazówki dotyczące jego problemów lub życia duchowego, kompletnie nie mając pojęcia o tym, co mówimy?! To takie bardzo ludzkie, że chcemy być docenieni, dostrzeżeni, podziwiani. Jeśli jednak zaczynamy na tym budować swój obraz siebie, to wcześniej czy później czeka nas katastrofa. Uznanie prawdy o sobie nie będzie zapewne proste, ale zaowocuje tym, że budować będziemy na stabilnym fundamencie, którego gwarantem jest ten, który sam jest Prawdą. SPOWIEDŹ ADWENTOWA Spowiedź Adwentowa dla naszych parafian odbędzie się w poniedziałek, 18 grudnia o godz. 18:00. W konfesjonałach posługiwać będą zaproszeni księża z innych parafii. Serdecznie zachęcamy do skorzystania z sakramentu pokuty i przygotowania się w ten sposób na nadchodzące święta. Przypominamy, że w naszej parafii spowiedź odbywa się w każdą sobotę po Mszy św. o godz. 7:00 oraz o godz. 15:00. Istnieje również możliwość umówienia się na indywidualną spowiedź. Osoby, które nie mogą dotrzeć na spowiedź z powodu wieku lub choroby prosimy o kontakt z biurem parafialnym i umówienie indywidualnej wizyty w domu. NOWENNA DO DZIECIĄTKA JEZUS Rozpoczynając od 16 grudnia, w naszej parafii odmawiamy Nowennę do Dzieciątka Jezus. Będziemy ją sprawować po każdej Mszy św. aż do Świąt. Zachęcamy również do osobistego odmawiania Nowenny, jeśli nie jest możliwe dołączenie do wspólnej modlitwy w świątyni. Dzisiejsza druga kolekta jest przeznaczona na The Retirement Fund for the Religious. Druga kolekta w przyszłym tygodniu będzie przeznaczona na wsparcie dla Szkoły Św. Józefa.

6 Saint Joseph Basilica NOWENNA DO ŚW. JÓZEFA Zapaszmy wszystkich parafian i czcicieli św. Józefa na Msze Wotywną i Nowennę. Adwent to doskonały czas na uświadomienie sobie ogromnej roli jaką odegrał ten wielki św. w Historii Zbawienia. Jego wkład z Boże dzieło nie zakończył się wraz z odejściem do nieba. W dalszym ciągu wspomaga każdego z nas nieustanną pomocą. Dzięki Niemu możemy lepiej zrozumieć miłość, jaką otacza nas Bóg. W procesji z figurą św. Józefa pójdą członkowie Holy Rosary Sodality. MSZA RODZINNA Dziś, o godz. 9:30 gromadzimy się na Mszy św. rodzinnej. Jest to wyjątkowe spotkanie, gdyż dzieci przyniosą do pobłogosławienia figurki dzieciątka Jezus, które następnie zaniosą do swoich domowych żłóbków. Żłóbki te, tradycyjnie mają być wypełniane źdźbłami siana, które symbolizują dobre uczynki i wyrzeczenia uczynione w czasie Adwentu. Im więcej dobrych czynów, tym więcej wygodnego sianka dla małego Jezuska. Zachęcamy do pielęgnowania tej wspaniałej tradycji w każdej rodzinie. DEKORACJE W BAZYLICE W najbliższy poniedziałek i wtorek będziemy ustawiali dekoracje świąteczną w Bazylice. Pracy jest bardzo dużo, zwłaszcza przy zawieszaniu wieńców i ustawianiu dużych choinek. Bardzo prosimy o pomoc! Liczy się każda para rąk! MSZE ŚW. W ŚWIĘTA W Wigilię i Boże Narodzenie Msze św. będą odprawiane w następujących godzinach: Wigilia/niedziela: - Msze święte przed południem jak w każdą niedzielę; - Msza wigilijna po angielsku o godz. 16:00; - Pasterka o godz. 24:00 Boże Narodzenie: - Msze św. po angielsku: 8:15 i 9:30 - Msza św. po polsku: 11:00 Pamiętajmy, że najważniejszym elementem w obchodzeniu Świąt jest uczestnictwo w świętej Liturgii. Tradycja dzielenia się Opłatkiem jest bardzo silna w Polsce, ale możemy spotkań ją także w innych krajach, gdzie Polacy zaszczepiają tę tradycję u innych narodów.
