Watching Jesus walk by, he says to two of his disciples, Behold, the Lamb of God. And the two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus (John 1:36 37). One was Andrew, who, in turn, goes to his brother Simon and brings him to Jesus. And Jesus gives him a new name, Cephas, which means rock. A new life begins for Andrew and Simon, and most likely for the other disciple as well, possibly either James or John (both were ishermen with Peter and Andrew). It was clear to Jesus that they were searching for something: What are you looking for? They answered, Teacher, where are you staying? implying that it was going to take more than a few minutes to answer that question. Jesus took them in immediately: Come, and you will see... And they stayed with him that day (John 1:38 39). As we return to Ordinary Time, which comes from the Latin ordo ( numbered ), we count the weeks off by numbers: Second Sunday, Third Sunday, and so on. But ordinary time is lived in a world touched by God s grace. God continues to come into our lives, if we would notice. Like John pointing out Jesus to his two disciples, the old priest Eli helps Samuel to understand that the Lord is entering the boy s life and tells him to respond, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening (1 Samuel 3:9). We bring each other to God, to Jesus Christ, by being attentive to how God is at work among us. In Latin America, where Christian values remain important, many families are wounded by hostility from the surrounding environment and by broken relationships within the family. Yet throughout the hemisphere, the Church continues to point the way to Christ as the source of hope and healing, both within the family and in society. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America offer families and communities a way to strengthen, af irm, and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God. In Nicaragua, the Diocese of Juigalpa saw a need to train more staff and volunteers in marriage and family life ministry. Through a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the diocese was able to build its capacity for sharing the faith by forming family catechetical teams in all of its twenty-two parishes. Forty-eight weekly gatherings in each of the diocese s three pastoral zones provided the training and support needed to establish the teams. Each zone had between sixty and eighty participants, and the teams received training on the New Evangelization and practical topics related to daily family life. The training program ended with a retreat for all participants. The program organizers have reported that, through the training they received, the teams are now able to accompany married couples in their journey of faith and assist couples preparing for marriage. The Diocese of Santa Rosa de Osos in Colombia has a long history of living with drug traf icking and criminal activity. Though the situation has improved, residents are still faced with poverty and violence. Thanks to a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, a project called Nuestra Iglesia particular en camino de Iniciación Cristiana (Our Church Traveling the Journey of Christian Initiation) helped the faithful of the diocese to share their faith by training catechists and renewing the lives of communities, according to the ways of the New Evangelization. The diocese also formed bible study facilitators, who have in turn established bible study groups in parishes. The project envisioned touching all eighty-four parishes in the diocese, covering an area of 22,000 square kilometers. Training catechists in the parishes and providing access to bible study groups and other workshops and seminars is helping parishioners and others to live their faith amid challenging circumstances. Through projects like these, the Collection for the Church in Latin America empowers the people of Latin America to deepen their faith and share it with the world.
