(773) 491-6929 Reflecting on God s Word When the rich young man in this week s Gospel asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, the answer is simply nothing. Or to put it another way, You don t have to do anything to earn it. Simply do not let anything get in the way. Don t kill, or commit adultery, or steal, or lie, or defraud, or any such things that tend to muddy the focus of our lives. Beyond that it seems we don t have to do anything. But, the young man protests, he has avoided all these things. And so the reply Jesus then offers is, in effect, don t let your riches get in the way either. Easier said than done, and more dif icult than imagined. More dif icult than threading a needle with camel hair when the hair is still on the camel; more dif icult than getting a camel inside your house, whether through your pet door or your back door or maybe even your garage door. Camels don t shrink. Neither does our hold on riches. Both tend to get in the way. So what does one then do, we ask. Curious that was the same response in Jesus day as well. And over the centuries believers have sought ways to keep wealth in perspective, or at least some things that might help do so. From the very beginning of his ponti icate, Pope Francis has continually called us to missionary discipleship. In his homily in Philadelphia, he challenged all of us to explore new ways so that our Church can be more equipped to carry on the mission of Christ: One of the great challenges facing the Church in this generation is to foster in all the faithful a sense of personal responsibility for the Church s mission, and to enable them to ful ill that responsibility as missionary disciples, as a leaven of the Gospel in our world. This will require creativity in adapting to changed situations, carrying forward the legacy of the past not primarily by maintaining our structures and institutions, which have served us well, but above all by being open to the possibilities which the Spirit opens up to us and communicating the joy of the Gospel, daily and in every season of our life. In my year in Chicago, I have been inspired by many of you and have great hope for our future. The joy of the Gospel is alive in Chicago. I have also been learning of many realities that challenge us to evaluate how we work as parishes to share the joy of the Gospel into the future. The Holy Father is right, we should be attentive to the reality before us. We know that the landscape of the Church in Chicago has changed since many of our parishes were founded, with demographics shifting greatly over time. Some of our parishes have aging facilities that cost more to repair than we have. We also have fewer priests available to pastor our parishes. We are sometimes challenged to fully live out the mission because we are spreading resources too thin. Pope Francis reminds us that we have the creativity to take on these challenges with joy if we are open to the possibilities the Spirit opens up to us. Earlier this week I met with all priests in the Archdiocese to begin the discussion of how to address these challenges in the coming years. This is just the beginning of a long process to determine how to serve the pastoral needs of the Archdiocese and strengthen parish vitality for the long-term future. As the process moves forward, I am committed to a process that involves discipline, wide consultation and community involvement. We want to ensure that our plans for the future best meet the needs of the people of God, respond to the Church s call to mission, and offer longterm sustainability. From time to time you will be hearing more about this effort, but I wanted to let you know of this development, because I need and want your prayers for its success. You are in mine. W swej homilii w Filadel ii Papież wezwał nas do odkrywania nowych dróg, aby nasz Kościół był lepiej wyposażony do wypełniania misji Chrystusa: Jednym z największych wyzwań stojących w tej chwili przed Kościołem jest krzewienie we wszystkich wiernych poczucia osobistej odpowiedzialności za misję Kościoła i danie im możliwości, by wypełniali to zadanie jako uczniowie-misjonarze, jako zaczyn Ewangelii w naszym świecie. Wymaga to kreatywności w dostosowaniu się do zmienionych sytuacji. Trzeba przekazywać dziedzictwo przeszłości nie tylko przez utrzymywanie struktur i instytucji, które są użyteczne, ale przede wszystkim otwierając się na możliwości, jakie odkrywa przed nami Duch, i przekazując radość Ewangelii każdego dnia i na każdym etapie naszego życia. Wielu z was wciąż, odkąd przed rokiem przybyłem do Chicago, nie przestaje mnie inspirować. Dlatego właśnie mam wiele nadziei na naszą przyszłość. Radość Ewangelii jest żywa w Chicago. Jednak uczę się tu również rzeczywistości, która domaga się od nas przeprowadzenia ewaluacji naszej pracy, jako zespołu para ii, abyśmy również w przyszłości mogli dzielić się z innymi radością Ewangelii. Ojciec Święty ma rację twierdząc, że powinniśmy być czujni względem czekającej nas rzeczywistości. Zdajemy sobie sprawę, że wraz z wielkimi przeobrażeniami demogra icznymi, od czasu założenia wielu naszych para ii, pejzaż naszego Kościoła w Chicago zmienił się. W niektórych para iach dają znać o sobie starzejące się budynki, a ich naprawa kosztuje więcej niż posiadamy. Aktualnie w naszych para iach jest mniej księży niż przed laty. Czasami życie naszą misją i wypełnianie jej jest prawdziwym wyzwaniem, gdyż zasoby, którymi dysponujemy są zbyt małe. Papież Franciszek przypomina nam, że dzięki naszej kreatywności możemy odpowiadać na stawiane nam wyzwania z radością. Stanie się to możliwe, jeśli my sami będziemy otwarci na możliwości, na które otwiera nas Duch Święty. Na początku tego tygodnia spotkałem się ze wszystkim księżmi Archidiecezji Chicago, aby rozpocząć dyskusję nad sposobem reagowania na wyzwania, które pojawią się przed nami w ciągu najbliższych lat. Jest to dopiero początek długiego procesu określenia najlepszego sposobu odpowiadania na potrzeby duszpasterskie archidiecezji i zapewnienia para iom witalności na dalszą przyszłość. Podczas, gdy proces ten rozwija się jestem zobowiązany do przeprowadzenia go stosując pewną dyscyplinę, prowadząc szerokie konsultacje i będąc zaangażowanym we wspólnotę. Chcemy zapewnić, że nasze plany na przyszłość w najlepszy sposób odpowiedzą na potrzeby wiernych i odpowiedzą na wezwanie Kościoła do pełnienia jego misji.
