For the Lord is good Psalm 100:4 May God bless you and all your loved ones, and may he watch over those who have no one and nothing this Thanksgiving Day. Father Jason Torba and the entire staff of St. Ferdinand parish and schools In everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18) It s Thanksgiving. Time to go around the dinner table and say what you are thankful for. When it s your turn, you will likely be thankful for your family and the good meal. Then, you ll think of other blessings that have come your way. But will you be thankful for the difficul es and hardships? Will you thank God for the nasty neighbor and the guy with road rage that crossed your path the other day? If not, you are neglec ng some of your blessings. The Everyday Things It s easy to thank God at the end of our day for the things we enjoyed, but if we adjust our perspec ve, we will find blessings we never iden fied as such. For instance, when I was pregnant with our eight children, ge ng up in the middle of the night and feeling uncomfortable or sick or needing to use the bathroom was standard nigh me procedure. One night, I was about to grumble to myself when a powerful inspira on overcame me. Instead of complaining, I could be offering up this suffering for others who were not so blessed as me. I thought of the pregnant women on the streets of India or in Guatemala; women without indoor plumbing and a clean so bed. Here I was complaining instead of giving thanks for my comfortable circumstances. Imagine from God s vantage point, all the mes we complain to Him, or even just to ourselves. I have pointed out to my kids that God sees all everyone in the world all at once. So while we are complaining about some trivial thing, God sees the suffering of his poor and forgo en. Instead of complaining, we should be thanking God and offering up our inconveniences for those who are less fortunate and for the conversion of sinners. To suffer is not just an opportunity to strengthen our own souls, but something that can be united to the sufferings of Christ and given in love, like a prayer, for the salva on of poor, misguided sinners. Lest we neglect some of these opportuni es, I will point out an area we all experience in our lives that we can turn into a treasure. In another ar cle, I pointed out that the people that seem to darken our doorways the difficult people in our lives are actually blessings. Why else did the saints seem to be a racted to nasty, unlovable people? One reason was because they had the ability to love like Christ, but they also saw the opportunity. Consider these Scripture passages: For as you judge, so will you be judged, and the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you (Luke 6:38). And in the Bea tudes in Ma hew 5:3-10 we are told, Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. In the context of these promises, it makes sense that the saints gravitated towards those that the rest of us find difficult. Rather than seeing someone to avoid and complain about, they saw these people as blessings. For if we are kind and merciful to those that don t deserve it, then God will keep His promise and show us mercy we don t deserve. In effect, when we are kind and forgiving and pray for those that hurt us, we are also helping ourselves. So this year, when it s your turn to share what you are thankful for, imagine how your list will surprise the others at the table. It will be an opportunity to share your new perspec ve with others and for everyone at the table to open their eyes to blessings they might have overlooked before. Ins tu ng this feast, Pope Pius XI proclaimed: Pax Chris in regno Chris ( The peace of Christ in the reign of Christ ). This feast was established and proclaimed by the Pope to reassert the sovereignty of Christ and the Church over all forms of government and to remind Chris ans of the fidelity and loyalty they owed to Christ, who by his Incarna on and sacrificial death on the cross had made them both adopted children of God and future ci zens and heirs of the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ is our spiritual King and Ruler who rules by truth and love. November 22, 2015 Christ the King Sunday Page Eight UROCZYSTOŚĆ CHRYSTUSA KRÓLA Kościół katolicki obchodzi dzisiaj uroczystość Chrystusa Króla Wszechświata, panującego w niebie i na ziemi. Ostatnia niedziela przed Adwentem - początkiem nowego roku liturgicznego - stanowi podkreślenie faktu panowania zmartwychwstałego Chrystusa. Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla w swojej wymowie wskazuje na cel ostateczny życia człowieka, czyli na zjednoczenie z Bogiem i oddanie się pod panowanie Jego miłości w Królestwie Bożym. Królowanie Chrystusa wyraża się w zbawieniu człowieka. Przez swoją śmierć na krzyżu dał On dowód miłości względem wszystkich ludzi i odpuszczając nasze grzechy, pojednał nas z Ojcem oraz uczynił ludem wybranym, czyli królestwem i kapłanami Boga samego. W ikonografii Chrystus Król już od starożytności przedstawiony jest jako Pantokrator, czyli Wszechwładca, zasiadający na tronie, mający ziemię za podnóżek lub trzymający glob ziemski w dłoni. Tak przedstawiają Jezusa dawne ikony i mozaiki. Tak też wielokrotnie ukazuje Go Apokalipsa - jako zasiadającego na tronie, któremu całe stworzenie oddaje cześć. Równocześnie Ewangelie ukazują inny wymiar królowania Chrystusa. Ubiczowany, ukoronowany cierniami Jezus odpowiada na pytanie Poncjusza Piłata: Tak, jestem Królem. Królestwo moje nie jest z tego świata (por. J 18, 33-40). Na krzyżu Chrystusa widniał napis: Jezus Nazarejczyk Król Żydowski (J, 19,19), a ukrzyżowany z Nim łotr prosił tuż przed śmiercią: Jezu, wspomnij na mnie, gdy będziesz w swoim królestwie (Łk 23,42). Ten ewangeliczny przekaz ukazuje, że w najgłębszym chrześcijańskim sensie panować to znaczy służyć, a nawet oddać życie za innych. Uroczystość Chrystusa Króla wprowadził do kalendarza liturgicznego papież Pius XI encykliką "Quas Primas" z 11 grudnia 1925 r. na zakończenie roku jubileuszowego. Papieska encyklika ustanawiająca tę uroczystość jako przeciwstawienie się silnym tendencjom ateistycznym i laickim, które w tym czasie były bardzo popularne, wskazywała na Chrystusa jako Króla mającego władzę nad człowiekiem i całym światem. Papież nakazał wtedy, aby we wszystkich kościołach tego dnia po głównym nabożeństwie przed wystawionym Najświętszym Sakramentem odmówić Litanię do Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa oraz akt poświęcenia rodzaju ludzkiego Najświętszemu Sercu. Początkowo uroczystość obchodzono w ostatnią niedzielę października. Po reformie liturgicznej w 1969 r. uroczystość została przeniesiona na ostatnią niedzielę roku kościelnego. Umieszczenie tej uroczystości na końcu kalendarza wiąże się z biblijnym rozumieniem czasu i odzwierciedla zarazem sens roku liturgicznego, który jakby odtwarza najważniejsze zdarzenia w dziejach zbawienia. Gratulujemy Siostrom Misjonarkom Chrystusa Króla z okazji ich święta patronalnego i dziękujemy im za ich odana posługę w w naszej parafii. THANKSGIVING czyli ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA Święto Dziękczynienia (Thanksgiving Day) jest formą wdzięczności społeczeństwa za coroczne płody oraz wszystkie dobre rzeczy obecne w sercach ludzi. Thanksgiving w Stanach Zjednoczonych obchodzone jest co roku w ostatni czwartek listopada Jest to pamiątka pierwszego Dziękczynienia założycieli angielskiej kolonii w Plymouth, którzy przybyli do Nowej Anglii na statku Mayflower 21 listopada 1620 r. jako grupa 102 purytanów z Anglii (tzw. Pilgrim Fathers, ojcowie pielgrzymi). Ponieśli oni tej pierwszej zimy wielkie straty i wielu z nich zmarło DZIĘKUJCIE PANU, BO JEST DOBRY. W najbliższy czwartek, 26 listopada obchodzimy Święto Dziękczynienia. Nasze dziękczynienie należy się przede wszystkim naszemu Bogu i Stwórcy, za wszelkie dary i łaski, którymi nas hojnie każdego dnia obdarza. Składajmy wyrazy wdzięczności i zaplanujmy przeżyć to Święto Dziękczynienia uczestnicząc we Mszy świętej, która w naszym kościele będzie sprawowana w czwartek o godz. 9: ano. Nie będzie Mszy św o godz, 8 rano, 12 w południe i 7 wieczorem. Biuro będzie nieczynne w czwartek, piątek i sobotę od 26-28 listopada. Ponownie zapraszamy 30 listopada. z głodu. November 22, 2015 Christ the King Sunday Page Thirteen So I was hanging out in my kitchen a week or so ago stealing le overs from the refrigerator when my wife walked in. I m wri ng, I said. Ah, Gail said. I explained to her that my nonwri ng was actually a recognized step in the genera on of text according to composi on scholars. It s the pre-wri ng stage, I told her. Yeah. It s part of the en re process. Then I said I was trying to think of an idea for this week s column. It s Christ the King Sunday, I told her, adding, You d think it should be rife with things to write about. In return, she observed, We don t really have much experience with kings Hmmmm. She hadn t read it, but this is exactly what the Seasonal Missale e author suggests in his/her introduc on to today s readings. The image of a king may not connect much with our lives, the text begins, apart from a few brief encounters with England s royal marriages And my encounter with such things has been nil, by design. I ve just never been caught up with that whole royalty thing across the pond. Which is probably why I liked that song Royals by the New Zealand pop singer Lorde that came out a couple of years ago. And we'll never be royals/ It don't run in our blood/ That kind of luxe just ain't for us/ We crave a different kind of love I m too busy with my own life to spend me following the lives of the rich and the regal. And yet, I remember having a conversa on with my wife on this very topic this past May when we spent a week in England. Serious bling. We also saw much of the ceremonial wardrobe worn by various royals over the years to this event or that. And to my delight, I usually found some classic period piece on London television in the evening telling us more of the royal story. Anyway, through all of this, I told my wife that I could be er understand England s--and the world s--fascina on with kingly things. Which takes me from the refrigerator all the way to today. I love the full tle of this Churchly feast: The Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Impressive. But how could it be otherwise, especially when we consider this, from Revela ons: Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth. In retrospect, then, I have more experience with kings than I realized. We all do, because we serve a mighty one. And on our best days, we serve him by serving one another the way he served us. Per the English poet Robert Herrick centuries ago, Twixt kings and tyrants there s this difference known/ Kings seek their subjects good, tyrants their own. With hindsight and grace, we understand that Jesus was at his kingly-best even as he hung on the tree seeking our ul mate good: to posi on us as blameless before the Father. Here s to kingly things, then. Here s to the King of the Universe! And the King--thank God--of you and me.
