December 13, 2015 3rd Sunday of Advent Page Four The extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy began on Dec 8. Pope Francis said it was his wish that the jubilee be a living experience of the closeness of the Father, whose tenderness is almost tangible, so that the faith of every believer may be strengthened and thus tes mony to it be ever more effec ve. T he logo and the mo o together provide a fi ng summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The mo o Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an invita on to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk 6:37-38). The logo the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik presents a small summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it represents an image quite important to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul demonstra ng that it is the love of Christ that brings to comple on the mystery of his incarna on culmina ng in redemp on. The logo has been designed in such a way so as to express the profound way in which the Good Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with a love with the power to change one s life. One par cular feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd, in his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one s own humanity and the future that lies ahead, contempla ng, in his gaze, the love of the Father. The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human. The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward, suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the love of the Father who forgives all. orks of mercy can be directed not only toward the needs W of the body, but the needs of the soul as well. Indeed, the most serious form of poverty of all can be the poverty of the spirit, not only because it drains life of all energy, joy, and sense of purpose, but also because it is the one kind of poverty that can last forever. The human spirit longs for the nourishment of truth, goodness, and beauty if it is to be healthy and strong and if it is to grow in sanc fica on and be prepared for the life to come. The Catholic Church has tradi onally encouraged her children to understand the prac ce of merciful love by dividing the works of mercy into two kinds: corporal (that is, bodily) and spiritual. What we see in the life of Mother Teresa is a shining example of a life dedicated especially to prac cing the corporal works of mercy, but in addi on to the corporal works or mercy, the Church has outlined the spiritual works of mercy. Look to these works as preventa ve medicine for poverty of the spirit. Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty clothe the naked shelter the homeless visit the sick visit the imprisoned bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion, as listed below, by which we help our neighbors with their emo onal and spiritual needs. counsel the doub ul instruct the ignorant admonish sinners comfort the afflicted forgive offenses bear wrongs pa ently pray for the living and the dead

Będzie to Rok Święty Miłosierdzia. Pragniemy go przeżywać w świetle słów Pana Jezusa: Bądźcie miłosierni jak Ojciec - ogłosił papież Franciszek podczas wielkopostnej liturgii w marcu br.

December 13, 2015 3rd Sunday of Advent Page Thirteen ON MASS AT SAINT PIUS V, AND WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) As I ve wri en before in this space, my wife and I enjoy going to Sunday Mass when we re away from home. We go to fulfill our Sunday obliga on, certainly, but just as much, we go to see how other parishes celebrate Eucharist, how the folks in the pews interact with one another, how they welcome strangers in their midst. Most recently, we visited St. Pius V in Cannon Falls, MN. With our son and daughter-in-law living in Cannon Falls these days, it was actually our second Sunday Mass there, and we le with good vibra ons both mes around. The good vibes generated in part from the congrega on itself. The place is hopping, I told Gail as we se led into the third pew from the front (we arrived just as Mass was star ng, and the back pews were already taken ). The crowd may have formed because the 8:30 AM Mass was the only cket in town. S ll, the cantor was good, the music solid, the lector well-rehearsed. And I was impressed by the vitality of the faith community. For starters, the folks all around in those front pews were warm and welcoming at the Sign of Peace. More so, I no ced several families about, and many with young children and/or infants. It was all very engaging, energe c, hopeful As was the pastor, a Fr. Terry Beeson, per the bulle n. Fr. Beeson had Mass our first me to Saint Pius V as well, and he must have impressed me then because when I saw him again, I said to Gail (in a good way), Hey! We know this guy! Fr. Beeson gave a though ul homily about the importance of preparing not only for Support Staff Mrs. Zofia Mazurek, Parish Secretary Sr. Kamila Wojdyla, Administrative Assistant Ms. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin Editor Mr. Kamil Duda, Website Designer/Editor Liturgical Bro. He brought laughter with self-depreca ng humor about his singing ( I did well in prac ce ). Also, when he presented me the Body of Christ at Communion, he pressed it (no ceably) firmly into my hand. Seems he did the same for Gail, too, promp ng her to say to me this me, He delivers Eucharist with force. Hmmmm In modified context, isn t this what we are all called to do? To deliver Jesus to one another, and with authority? We re over halfway through our Advent observance, this three-fold an cipa on of the Christ in remembering his birth, in welcoming him daily into our lives, and in awai ng his return. And what be er way to an cipate Christ than to be Christ for one another? Zephaniah calls out, The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness. Paul calls out, Rejoice in the Lord always. And when the crowds ask John the Bap st, What should we do? he responds, Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none Let s learn from the prophet, from the apostle, from the Bap st. Let s deliver Christ to one another with authority. We don t have to be loud or boisterous in the process, but if the world is watching--and it is watching--then the world should grasp with no misunderstanding just who we are represen ng by our words, by our ac ons, by the way we live our lives. This will make for a good Advent for all of us. Besides, it ll do the good Fr. Beeson proud.
