September 18, 2016 25th Ordinary Sunday Page Four How can I be a good neighbor? By Elizabeth White These past few weeks, I have been in several mee ngs with different groups, concerning a variety of topics, and an odd thing keeps happening. A common theme keeps surfacing from different voices: how can I be a good neighbor? Yesterday, we marked the fi eenth anniversary of 9/11. I have listened to stories, read ar cles and posts, and watched interviews. Each one brings me back to that day the disbelief, the horror, and the wan ng to hug everyone I loved just a li le ghter. Tears well up in my eyes as survivors or loved ones of those we lost tell their stories. In 2001, I worked in Boston and lived just north of the city. That day, a er the second tower collapsed on the small television we were huddled around, I le work and went directly to an overflowing Catholic Church downtown to pray. I then headed home to be with my two year-old daughter. It was a beau ful, cloudless day, so I took her to a small playground around the corner. I expected it to be empty as it usually was, but instead, the park was full. Children were running and laughing. But the mothers and fathers just stood around silent. It s as if we knew we didn t have words for what was happening, but we knew we were be er off being together at the playground than in our homes alone. In the midst of such evil, even more good surfaced. We saw neighbors in New York reach out to one another and neighbors from all over the country head to New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania to offer whatever help they could. No one cared about skin color, economic status, or poli cal posi on. We just knew ins nc vely how to be neighbors to each other. We saw more of our neighbors at church. We had family dinners each evening. We slowed down and remembered what was important. We were kinder and gentler to one another. That is what I remember most about the months a er 9/11. That horrific day showed me the immense power of love and mercy. As a na on, we stood with our neighbors. As we honor our shared experience of 9/11, my hope is that we can remember our collec ve human capacity to come together, that our neighbors need us more than ever, and that we each have the ability to be a good neighbor if we choose. Mercy Challenge Consider what you consider what is most important to you? Ask yourself, How can I be a good neighbor? What would that look like? Then ac vely choose to be a good neighbor. In a small way, bring kindness into your world. Maybe you can pa ently listen to someone; or chat with the person behind the counter; or offer to babysit to let a new mother get some rest; or bring flowers to someone just because. This is how we can bring God s love and mercy to our neighbors this week.

September 18, 2016 25th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen ON THE DISHONEST STEWARD Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) So the displaced steward in today s Gospel is he a bad guy, or is he really a good guy? Seems like an easy call. I mean, the passage itself refers to him as the dishonest steward. And Jesus puts it all out there for us to see, beginning this parable to his disciples by saying, A rich man had a steward who was reported to him for squandering his property. Well, that s not good. How do you recover from that? Jesus explains further that the man was called on the carpet by his master for the reported squandering: What is this I hear about you? Prepare a full account of your stewardship, because you can no longer be my steward. End of job, end of story But perhaps not quite. This is not as clean a bad guy/good guy story as the story of the good thief, who, to my recollec on is never actually described as such in Scriptures, but who is nonetheless assured a place in Paradise by Jesus himself. My bible has li le headings at the beginning of each chapter and/or major story, and the beginning of today s Gospel--Luke 16--is en tled, The Wily Manager. Wily. Hmmmm. It has a certain nega ve connota on to it, but it also has a certain posi ve spin. Per dic onary.com, it means full of, marked by, or proceeding from wiles (ar ul or beguiling behavior); cra y; cunning. Sly-esque, I guess. Could be good. And you have to give the guy props for thinking things through. What shall I do, he asks himself, now that my master is taking the posi on of steward away from me? He reasons that he s too weak to dig--and ashamed to beg--so he needs a plan. I know what I shall do so that, when I am removed from the stewardship, they may welcome me into their homes Can t you just see him smiling as he calls in his master s debtors one by one? How much do you owe my master? he asks the first. One hundred measures of olive oil, the man responds, and the wily manager/dishonest steward answers, Here is your promissory note. Sit down and quickly write one for fi y. On it goes, promp ng the master to actually commend the man for ac ng prudently. Huh? I read somewhere once that under the financial arrangements of the day, this master may have allowed his steward to keep a share of the profits the steward made while conduc ng the master s business. If so, the steward may have been giving up his cut just to encourage payment of the debt, while at the same me endearing himself to the debtors so that they might welcome him in later on. Brilliant. The children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own genera on than are the children of the light, Jesus says. I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings I m not sure about this, but I think Jesus is referring not to ill-go en gains but rather to worldly wealth in general. And given its poten ally corrup ng influence, if we give it away to the poor, we are using it ul mately for the good, gaining us friends in high places. Which would be very prudent of all of us. Wily, even. In the very best of ways.
