Page Two March 8, 2009 Spiritual Reflection Nobody listens to me! Know the feeling? Sometimes others can seem so preoccupied with their own lives and their own concerns. We can talk and it seems like nobody is listening. Isn t it great when we find a friend that really listens to us? Aren t we proud when our children listen? Doesn t it make us feel good when others seek our advice and then choose to follow it? In our first reading this weekend, we hear about Abraham. He truly listened to God. He had yearned for a child his whole life long. After the child was born and began to grow up, God spoke to Abraham, Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you. Abraham was ready to do just that. Can we even imagine the kind of respect and love Abraham had for God? He not only listened but was ready to do what God asked, even if it meant doing without the son he loved so much. Of course Abraham didn t end up sacrificing his son, but became the father of many and in his descendents all the nations of the earth found blessing, just as God said. All this because Abraham listened to God an followed God s command. We know that God allowed his own Son to die for us. We have this holy season to reflect on the great love God has for us. God calls us as well. May we too be ready to listen! In our Gospel. we hear the story of the Transfiguration. Jesus appears in glory with Moses and Elijah. His disciples come to see that Jesus is the fulfillment of the law (Moses) and the prophets (Elijah). They could hardly believe the glory they experienced. Then they heard God say, This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Peter, James and John were ready to stay on the mountain forever. They were free of the unruly people down below, the ones who were conspiring against Jesus. They didn't want to hear any more talk about death. They were safe where they were. Why not set up some tents and stay? This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. Jesus was very clear with them. They would need all the faith they could muster. The glory they had seen would fill them with zeal and faith and they d need every bit of it. Jesus helped them see that they would need to come down from the mountain again and continue to do their work. It wouldn t be easy, that s for sure. In our lives, we need to listen as well. We too can be tempted to do this the easy way. We can be enslaved by our need for the approval of others. We needn t shrink from the values we should live. We can be fearless in doing right and standing up for right. It s our choice. Let s try to listen. Then let s try to follow. Have a good week! MMIX Father Pat Umberger, www.frpat.com BÓG NIE OSZCZĘDZIŁ WŁASNEGO SYNA Przed tygodniem słyszeliśmy wezwanie Jezusa do nawrócenia. Ten okres liturgiczny mobilizuje nas do refleksji, do wniknięcia w siebie, aby lepiej zrozumieć sens własnego przeznaczenia. Kiedy uczestniczymy we Msze świętej, prośmy zawsze Jezusa, by oczyścił nasze serca, pozwólmy, by nas ogarnęła Jego żywa obecność. -ks. Idzi-

You might be familiar with the special novena, Mass and procession at the Shrine each July in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Father Claudio is also a Dean of Vicariate IV and so is a liaison between parishes in his area and Bishop Paprocki. Along with his parish and Archdiocesan responsibilities, Father Claudio is Chaplain of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans and Director of the Centro de Atención al Migrante, Chicago. In September 2008, Father Claudio was awarded the Blessed Pope John XXIII Award in recognition of priestly dedication to Hispanic ministry. Father Claudio is a member of the Scalabrini Religious Order. The Congregation of the Missionaries of St. Charles, also known as Scalabrinians, is an international community of religious brothers and priests, founded in Piacenza (Italy) in 1887 by blessed John Baptist Scalabrini. The Congregation has been called to announce the good News of Christ to migrants and refugees, especially those who require a specific pastoral care. Scalabrinians fulfill their mission by sharing the same life and the very experience of migration. By their practice of religious vows and by their community living, they contribute with migrants to the growth of the Church which, in its earthly pilgrimage, associates itself particularly with the poorest and most abandoned classes of people. Many of them are engaged in preaching missions to migrant communities, teaching, or running multicultural parishes and ethnic missions. Second Sunday of Lent Page Five Religious Education News On Sunday, March 15, 2009, Bishop George Rassas will confer the sacrament of Confirmation on the eighth grade students of St. Priscilla School and Religious Education Program. Confirmation will take place at a special 2:00 PM Mass in our church. We ask that our Parish Community keep the Confirmation Class and their families in their prayers. NEWS FROM THE OFFICE OF CATHOLIC SCHOOLS As you know, St. Priscilla School is closing this June. There is, however, the potential of operating a self-sustaining faith and learning center at St. Priscilla. Father Idzi has graciously agreed that the building may be used for this purpose; its governance and finance, however, would be the responsibility of a board of specified jurisdiction accountable directly to the Archdiocese of Chicago. Once this board (which is not synonymous with the Core Team or a Parent Group) is formed, decisions can be made as to how this new center will be structured and what ages it can serve. -Sr. M. On the 14th of February, we held our sixth annual Valentine s Day Dance, which was organized by the Polish ethnic group in our parish community. Many people took part in this event, and they all danced well into the early morning hours. The fact that this dance was a huge success is largely due to the support and work of the dance committee and the generosity of our sponsors. The committee is made up of families that have already had experience in organizing dances, which bring joy to the people attending, as well as a noticeable profit for the parish. As the pastor, along with Fr. Gregory and Fr. Joseph, I offer my sincerest gratitude to the dance committee, the sponsorsin a special way POL-MART DELI and CASEY AND MARIA CZOCHARA, the generous donors of the raffle prizes, and to all the people who attended. The total profit from this dance was: $8,215.00. To everyone who helped make this dance a success, I once again express my gratitude for a job very well done! May God bless You! -Fr. Idzi, along with Fr. Gregory and Fr. Joseph-
