FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today's readings and psalm focus on God's laws and commands. In the Old Testament reading, Moses tells us that "the command of the Lord is not remote; it is near to you. It is in your mouths and in your hearts." The command is there because God is thereinside our very beings. We were created by God and made in God's image. We have God's light, love and Spirit embedded in us. How does that make you feel? Do you know you are a beloved child of God? Do you know this God offers forgiveness and love uncondi onally? Do you know God con nually calls you to greater wholeness? Do you feel God's grace working in your life? Some mes when we think of the words law and command, we think of strict and judgmental things. The psalmist, however, says the law of the Lord is perfect, it refreshes the soul and gives rejoicing to the heart. It enlightens the eye and is precious and sweet. This law is joy-filled and calls us to fullness of life. Finally, Jesus tells the scholar what the two greatest laws are: love God and treat your neighbor as yourself. He says that we are being a neighbor when we treat one another with mercy - exactly how we are treated by our loving God. So, go into the world and do this and you will experience the joy and abundance our God promises. July 14, 2019 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time l 3

Church E que e Dressing Appropriately As business casual has become the dress code in some workplaces, it is becoming more difficult to know whether dressing up for Sunday Mass is necessary. Liturgy is the Lord s inclusive banquet, but it is neither a state dinner nor a beach picnic. So what is the dress code? The answer is not always clear since customs differ. What is appropriate at a parish by a beach resort may be much more informal than what is appropriate at a downtown cathedral. Thought, clarity and flexibility are required by all parishioners, lest looking at what people wear become the near occasion of the sin called judging. Choose clothing that will not be distrac ng to you or others. No ce regional and ethnic expecta ons regarding Sunday dress. Err on the side of dressing up, not down; presume that most people will wear their best, most appropriate clothing and do likewise. Arriving and Leaving At theater produc ons and concerts latecomers are asked to remain in the lobby, wai ng un l an intermission to be seated. Some parishes follow this method and do not open the doors to latecomers un l there is a break in the liturgical ac on of the Mass. Others ask latecomers to remain in the ves bule or in the back of the church if they arrive during the readings, psalms, or homily. What is the point? To help those who are assembled to pray together without interrup on or distrac on. Every parish, of course, wants all who gather to par cipate from the moment they arrive to the closing sound of our common prayer and song. Good planning helps us be on me most of the me. Here are some habits to develop for arriving and leaving: Deposit gum, water bo les, and coffee cups in trash receptacles at the door. Silence all mobile devices. Pick up any worship aids you will need to par cipate fully. Make space for others to sit in the empty pews near you. If Mass has already begun Search fort seats before walking down the aisle or ask an usher for assistance in finding seats. Choose an appropriate me to join the assembly, such as when all are standing, but not during readings or prayers. Know that it is be er to be present even if late than it is to be absent altogether. If you need to leave early Please do so discreetly. Perhaps consider a Mass that is scheduled at a be er me so that you will not have to leave before the Mass is over. The me a er communion and the concluding rites are both important to the communal aspect of the liturgy as a whole. An old saying suggests that the priest should be the last one to enter the church and the first one to leave. Clean up your personal belonging before you leave and leave the church dy for the next congrega on, such as unused Sunday bulle ns or worship aids. Children at Mass Children are more than welcome at Mass! Most children are likely to be bap zed members of the Catholic Church. We are commi ed to their ongoing faith development. Children need to be a part of worship to learn how to worship. And we adults need them among us to help us remember that we are all children of God. It is only normal to expect young children to be distrac ng to parents and to others in the assembly some mes. E que e concerns how to keep distrac ons to a minimum and what to do when they do occur. If you find yourself especially sensi ve to noise or distrac ons, consider a ending the Mass with the fewest amount of children, usually an early morning Mass. But do not deprive yourself too o en. Children are a special gi to every worshipping community. Infants and very young children: Talk about prayer, the parts of the Mass, and what children will see and hear when they a end the liturgy before you leave home. Explain that church is a place where people speak quietly when not par cipa ng in the Mass and move more slowly and calmly. Communicate clearly to your children your hopes and expecta ons of their behavior. Remind young children of what is acceptable and proper behavior just before entering church. A end special liturgies for children and families, when offered. 6 l Welcome to St. Thomas Becket Catholic Community

Select a place in the assembly that will best facilitate everyone s par cipa on. This may be at the front where children's interest can be s mulated. There, they can see the priest, the servers, the reader, the ac on. Si ng up front and to the side is o en a good solu on for families with small children. Your child and the layout of the church may help you decide which is the best place. Set a good example by remaining as calm and prayerful as possible. Encourage your child to learn and par cipate in the ac ons of the Mass such as making the sign of the cross, si ng, standing, kneeling, listening, responding, and singing. Take your child out of the assembly if he/she becomes too loud or distrac ng to others. Compliment your child s behavior at the end of Mass. Help your child to get to know parish staff members, ministers, and other parishioners so that they themselves are known as par cipants in the prayer of the community. Leave food, electronic games and toys at home or in the car. Clean up a er your child and yourself at the end of Mass. Remember that children learn by observing you and others, whether you are intending to teach them or not. Preparing for Liturgy Preparing for liturgy mentally, spiritually, and physically speaks of its importance and value to us. When people come to worship completely unprepared and seemingly not at home, we welcome them in charity as newcomers or as seekers who have joined the assembly at the urging of the spirit. As a rule of thumb, good prepara on for worship makes every experience richer and more rewarding. Schedule liturgy into the family or household weekend ac vi es. Plan ahead as you would for any important occasion. Prepare for Mass in your household as part of your observance of the Lord s Day. Allow enough me to account for any transporta on problems such as traffic. Arrive early enough to read through the readings in the hymnal before Mass begins in order to be able to give your full a en on to the Reader during the Liturgy of the Word. Final Remarks Always dress modestly and appropriately. Arrive early to allow for personal prayer and/or read the readings of the day. Turn off or silence all mobile devices while s ll in the ves bule. This is your me with God. Use the restroom before/a er Mass. Men remove hats or caps before entering the Mass. Deposit gum, water bo les, and coffee cups in trash receptacles at the door. Make the sign of the cross with Holy water upon entering the main body of the church. Genuflect with great reverence towards the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle upon entering your pew. If unable to genuflect a profound bow is respec ul. Refrain from chit-chat which distracts others who are connec ng with God by praying both before and during Mass. Join the singing and know that singing is praying twice and that singing with others gives great praise to God, which is really why we are gathered here. Listen a en vely to the readings where God speaks directly to you. Commit to taking your child out of the congrega on from the first moment of disturbance. It reduces your stress as well as the stress of those around you. Receive communion with laser-like a en on. We receive Communion, we do not take. If choosing to receive the Body of Christ in hand, place the hand you write with under the hand you will receive, in a way, crea ng a throne for the Lord. A simple bow of the head to the Eucharist elements in the minister s hand as a sign of reverence to Christ before receiving is appropriate. Remember that the point of being at Mass is not to see what we can get out of it, but what you do to praise and worship the Almighty God. And finally, wait to leave only a er Father has le the building. July 14, 2019 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time l 7

CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Ques on: I've heard that faith is a theological virtue. What does that mean? Answer: To say a virtue is theological means that it comes as a gi from God. St. Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican monk who cra ed the famous arguments for the existence of God, wrote: "This alone is the true knowledge of God: to know that God is beyond knowing." God is transcendent. This word comes from the La n "transcendere," meaning "to climb beyond." When something is transcendent, it exists beyond our normal range of experience. Philosopher Peter Kree put it simply: "God is always more." While God created us in His image and likeness, too o en we re-create Him in ours. We project our deepest hopes, our subliminal fears, and our hidden dreams, and conjure up our own image of what God could be. Yet God can never be limited to our own percep on of Him. That's where faith comes in. We read in the Catechism that "faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that He has said and revealed to us and all that the Holy Church proposes for our belief" (CCC 1814). We can know God through reason, to a point. As human beings, we want to know and understand the world around us, but God isn't in the world around us. He's beyond it. The best way to come to know God is not through our own clever mental maneuvering, but through trus ng in God's revela on of Himself. We might think we know who God is, but the only way we can have any idea is if we trust, through the virtue of faith, who He has revealed Himself to be. 10 l Welcome to St. Thomas Becket Catholic Parish Community
